CiviMap Module

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you know that, through CTC and the help of bdragon and becw, the CiviMap Module has been released in very initial development stages.

Its simply a module that will help integrate the GMap Module and CiviCRM. CiviCRM already has some mapping features, but it is not as extensive as GMap. So one direction we are going in is to try to bring CiviCRM data towards the Drupal side and integrate it into GMap. Right now, the main feature is that this module builds KML feeds that can easily be an overlay on a GMap Macro (with the help of GMap Addons).

You can download and try it out, but it could change drastically at any moment at this point in its life, so I make no promises. What I need form you is some feedback on what you might want this module to do, and how it would most benefit the community as a whole. Thanks.

Drupal Mapping & GIS Presentations in Szeged

Hi everyone,

Bec and Bdragon submitted proposals for two Mapping/GIS events at DrupalCon Szeged - please head on over and vote!

A Roadmap for Mapping: GIS on Drupal in 2008 and Beyond! will cover the current status of GIS efforts on Drupal and the immediate plans for the most common modules: Location, Gmap, and the soon-to-be-released Geo module. This will be very similar to the well-received GIS overview session they presented in Boston.

Open Street Map Party This Weekend

This isn't just a Drupal thing, but a great Open Source development for everyone using mapping (and there are moves to use it in Drupal - http://drupal.org/project/mapstraction).

OpenStreetMap.org is an exciting example of a open source geographic resource. It's a kind of wikipedia for maps - a free editable map of the world, and anyone can add roads, bike paths and other geographic data to it. Around the world, many are contributing to it. In some places, mapping parties are being held to spur the collection of data.

Adding a New Feature: Lines and Areas on Maps?

I'd like to allow people to add lines (e.g. bike paths, walking routes) and areas (e.g. parks, forests, polluted areas) and have these display alongside points using gmap_views.

I've had a look around the Location and Mapping group discussion, the GMap issue queue, the various other mapping modules (GMap Addons, Geo, GeoBrowser, OpenLayers) and haven't found any development being done on this.

Open source / freely licensed stack for your own advanced map serving

EveryBlock (now launched in Chicago) just blogged about the technology they used to create their own mapping platform (not using Google or Yahoo maps). It's missing a few details no doubt, but in addition to the already open components listed here, EveryBlock (funded by the Knight Foundation, which is also making significant investments in Drupal) will ultimately make the complete recipe available. Here's the parts they're using:

Mapping and Drupal usability - an end-user (with pretensions!) view

My specific query is how to set about initialising the creation of a node through the use of a click on a Gmaps module generated map, but perhaps this highlights some wider issues about usability. I can see a metric shed-load of impressive work - flamboyant hat tip to webgeer, geodan; with the proposed Mapping API DEP etc - going into the backend on creating and expanding geo-functionality in Drupal, but not so much on the usability side.

Drupal KML module

I've been dabbling in getting a kml module together for Drupal for a while and have recently got it to a state where it's useful out of the box and still has good potential for future development.

The Drupal KML module currently lets you add a 'KML' link to the bottom of all location-enabled nodes (requires location.module), which then fires up Google Earth for you. The single node KML link is the most obvious functionality in the module, but it also allows you to view all nodes, or all nodes tagged with a certain term. There is functionality also to create network links for any of these feeds, giving you a continually up-to-date set of nodes from your site in Google Earth.

Vision: Full on wikimap

Hi everyone. I thought I would give you a heads-up about a project that I am working on and some of the extensions to drupal that I will be planning. I would hope to integrate some of this work into the future of the gmaps module if possible. I am currently working on something called the "Greater Victoria Community Atlas". check out development at http://greenmap.lifecyclesproject.ca

Things are still in alpha stage, and are likely to be a bit wonky. (best viewed in firefox at the moment)

It is basically an integration of liquid_wiki, gmaps, location, and a few other modules.. The idea is to create a wikimap system whereby users to add and edit points on the map. Each point on the map is linked to a liquid_wiki page where users can add content and pictures wikistyle. The map is based on layers that users can turn on and off (right hand-side menu). Each layer is actually a catagory pulled from taxomony. Marker Icons on the map are pulled from images in the catagory_image module. When you click on a point, it brings up the relevant page in an inline frame. I would love some comments!
