Best solution for large datasets

I've been recently inquired for a new project where a large number of geo-referentiated items should be placed on a map. In detail, there is a large dataset of a few hundred thousand equipments (around 0.5 million) that must be represented on a map and searchable on that same map. Each equipment is considered to be a full node with it's own data (manufacturer name, model, year built, ...).
These equipments can be grouped by some criteria, but it may happen that the users request the visibility of a huge quantity of them at the same time.

Trouble adding js event Listener on Gmap map (gmap module)

I'm trying to write a Drupal module that will add UTM coordinate fields to a location form, such that they'll interact properly with the GMap map as well as with the Latitude and Longitude fields - i.e. when the map is clicked, the UTM coordinates get calculated and populated along with the Lat/Long ones, and if the Lat/Long coordinates are changed by typing in the fields, the UTM coordinates change also, as well as the map, and vice versa.

Route planning

Does anybody have experience creating route planning tools using any location/gmap/openlayer modules? Basically, my goal is to input an arbitrary amount of locations (with a fixed start/end point) and find the shortest route between all the points.

Guidance to mapping

I really, really need some guidance.
I have a zipp file containing .shx .shp .phx and .dbf

I searched the modules for finding out witch module would take a GIS file like this, and found the GEO module.

I installed the module and uploaded the GIS zip file without problem.

The GIS file contains markers and info i like to put on a map.
Now here starts my trouble, i just can figure out how to show those markers and info on a map ?

I tried the mapstraction and open layers, but is confused.
I didnt manage to get any sense or map out of either these modules.

Mapping with Drupal and OpenLayers

Duration: 1 hr

There are now loads of different ways to do mapping and deal with geographic data in Drupal. One of the most interesting new(ish) approaches is the OpenLayers module (http://drupal.org/project/openlayers). It integrates the open source OpenLayers javascript library (http://openlayers.org) with views, CCK, and all the other Drupal goodness that we know and love. The thing that got me excited about OpenLayers is how easy it is to customize and extend. It integrates with MapBox (http://mapbox.com) - a service being developed by DevSeed (that recently won a $74,000 grant from the Knight Foundation to further this work). Why is this all so exciting? Come along to the session and learn how to set this up in Drupal and discuss the potential applications.
