Can I use Drupal for subscription based platform?

Hi,

I've spent a few days learning about GPL 2 and still not 100% sure if I can use Drupal as a Site Builder for my subscription based project?

If so, when a user subscribes do I have to send him access to the source code?

Thank you,
Jakub

Terms and Condition by space or role

Hello

I have an OA site with my first space working as a "course" with sections for homework, calendar, resources and team sections for team work. The idea is make this space blueprint for create more courses like this and other 2 types of "courses" (space blueprint). I need to do "legal terms" for users but different for each space (course) or can be by role too and I can create role by type (blueprint) of space.
Also I need a list of users who accepted the terms.

Will Drupal's open source license protect against patent lawsuits?

Reading the news lately, there is a lot of legal battle over tech patents. For example, Apple and Samsung are fighting over patents to the point of stifling further innovation. In addition, so called "patent trolls" -firms who buy patents in order to make a profit from legal settlements in court- make matters worse.

How does Drupal's open source license protect against such lawsuits?

Can developers legally obfuscate the code or use ioncube to protect code and sell?

Is it legal to obfuscate or ioncube encrypt the files and sell them? The code can technically be modified in either case. It's not compiled. I have a feeling I know the answer to this but, thought I'd make sure and cross it off the list.

Incorporation vs. professional liability/E&O insurance

I think this is a pretty common question. I've done a fair bit of research on the topic but lack experience; perhaps some of you who don't could help me out.

The question is: When a sole proprietor (Drupal Developer) starts doing steady business, should he/she:

  1. Get professional liability insurance?
  2. Incorporate as an S-Corp?
  3. Incorporate as an LLC?
  4. Stay a sole proprietor and just hope his/her contracts are waterproof?

Requests for Input on Legal Service Needs of Drupal Community

Hello all, I am an attorney in the U.S. and I also own and operate a few e-commerce retail sites running on Drupal with Ubercart. Currently my law practice is primarily focused on U.S. immigration law but I have some good friends that run a Drupal development shop (Commerce Guys) and I frequently help them out with contracts and other things they need for their business. I am far from a Drupal expert but I am pretty proficient and understand a lot of the issues related to web-development and e-commerce that affect both developers and site owners.

Risky Practice

The following thread came in my email today and it made me very concerned about what may be a very risky practice for the Drupal Association to be doing. For the good of the project I think this needs to be addressed quickly. I suggest discussing with lawyers, preferably ones familiar with both U.S. and international trade law and antitrust practices as these areas are likely in play.

Does managed hosting constitute conveyance?

Hi! I read the FAQ and found a post that is a similar case to ours but just wanted to confirm.

My question is simply does managed hosting constitute conveyance? I imagine a lot of folks will have similar questions as computing moves more toward a virtual and cloud hosting context.

In our case, we host our own Drupal instance, which contains custom modules and theme extensions we developed to meet the specific needs of our audience. We plan to release parts of the work we have developed to the open source community, but on a schedule we can support.
