The High Performance Drupal meetup is back! After taking a few months off, we're excited to announce we're meeting at Winkynet, a customer-focused, high performance webhost, at their Brea (Orange County) office on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, between 7-9pm Pacific. Join us!
Those interested in attending this meetup remotely are welcome to join us via WebEx.
About High Performance Drupal
The "high performance" part of the name is a catch-all to describe Drupal scalability, performance and benchmarking but we also discuss devops, deployment, infrastructure, high performance hosting, monitoring and highly repeatable processes.
We've been meeting since April, 2011, in a variety of locations around the Greater Los Angeles Area. Also, this meetup has been held at coffeeshops in the past and the addition of caffeine makes our meetings feel as if they go faster and faster as the night goes on.

Hi everyone, for some reason
Hi everyone, for some reason this event was scheduled for the wrong date. It's actually set for January 21st, which is the third Tuesday this month.
Meeting time
I just noticed that the event time is 6-8 pacific (1800-2000) in one part of the announcement, whereas it is 7-9 (1900-2100) in a different posting.
HTH, Jeff
Thanks, Jeff! I've fixed the
Thanks, Jeff! I've fixed the time. It's scheduled from 7-9pm.
I'm coming from Korea. :)
Hi
I've been sometimes checking out LA drupal meetups.
I decided to fly to LA to attend your meetup and see and learn how to run successful meetup as well as networking. :)
If you have recommendation of closeby hotel or accommodation, feel free to let me know.
It's my first time visiting LA. (I'm flying out to Miami on Wed)
Carpool would be nice as well... :)
Anyway! See you all soon.
Jiyoung from Seoul/Beijing
We'll be glad to have you!
We'll be glad to have you! Where in the Greater LA area are you staying? This is an enormous geographical area and we can help you coordinate carpooling.
That would be awesome! Haven't booked accommodation yet
Christefano! Thank you so much for your kind carpooling offer coordination offer! I appreciate it a lot!
So I arrive on Monday 20 JAN 14 19:15 Local Time.
My plan is to check out your Lab (I am very interested in co-working space idea in Seoul) and attend the meetup on 21st.
Then flying out to Miami the next morning 22nd Wed.
My question is (if you can answer some...)
Do you have any hotel or accommodation recommendation?
Other drupal visiting member stayed or your guest stayed around droplabs or someone who could help me with carpooling?
I am afraid to rent a car and drive a city I don't know...
So I like to use public transportation.
I know you are not travel agency or anything...but just in case...if you had experience guiding/helping other drupalist visiting from other parts of the world...share some tips or ideas.
I'm little nervous on how to go around LA...from airport...
In Seoul, Korea, it's so easy to take subway from airport or anywhere in Seoul...
Bus or subway...any info would be highly appreciated... :)
Feel free to let me know things you know comfortably and no worries to answer all my concerned questions regarding travelling there. :)
I thank you. Or anyone sharing some idea or tip.
BTW, my email is jiyoung@mswebmatrix.com
LA transportation
Hi Happy,
My 2 cents on your upcoming trip to LA, & a couple of comments on lodging/transportation:
You might want to consider a place down at LAX as being (semi-) central to your trip. The first one that comes to my mind is the hotel where SCALE 11X was held (LAX Hilton, I think; down side is that it might be expensive). It is easy to get a bus line from right out front, that would take her over to the Blue line, from which she could get to Droplabs fairly easily.
How to get to DropLab from airport by public transportation?
Can be done, but not completely straight forward (~ take bus X (don't remember # now, but can get it later --> Blue line --> Red Line --> Union Station (walk or take a bus to DropLabs from there; I'd recommend that somebody just pick her up @ Union Station. Carpool of some sort would be much easier/less worry for her, especially being new to the area
Also, remember that 1/20/14(Mon) is Martin Luther King Holiday, so the public transportation schedule may be somewhat reduced.
If you decide you want to go the public transportation route, I can get you solid directions on just what lines to use. The best bus directions for LA I've run into are in Google maps. To do some preliminary research on how to get from ~LAX to DropLabs, tell it you want to go from LAX Hilton (5711 W.Century Blvd, Los Angeles, CA) to 651 N. Clover St, Los Angeles, CA 90031 --Droplabs)
HTH, Jeff Nutting (I look forward to seeing you at DropLabs next week)
To clarify what fejn
To clarify what fejn said:
From LAX to Droplabs:
1) Take shuttle (I think it's free) from LAX to Green Line Station
Once at Green Line Station, purchase the $5 day pass as that lets you ride the train/buses all day for $5. You will have to pay $1 extra to actually get the plastic transit card (there are prompts at the kiosks but the UI is terrible & I've submitted a free UI redesign to the MTA, cuz I'm always helping people having to navigate it, but they've never responded) (there might be prompts in your language to make it easier)
Once you have your TAP card & the $5 day pass, make sure to "tap" it on the kiosk- it should say something like 'day pass good until xx/xx/xx which should be the day you purchased it. It's good all day, until like 2am. You have to tap your card at every transition point so make sure you do that once you get to a new transition.
2) From LAX Green Line Station, take Green Line (going EAST towards Norwalk)
3) Get off at Rosa Parks Station (about 6 or 7 stops) (Imperial/Wilmington) & walk downstairs to the Blue Line ramp (you will see LOTS of people exiting here since it's a popular transition point)
4)
On the Blue Line platform you'll see 2 areas. Make sure to take the Blue Line going to Downtown LA (i.e. 7th Street Metro station)
You ride the Blue ALL the way until it ends.
5) Follow the crowd downstairs to the Red Line Station
Once downstairs at the Red Line platform, make sure to take the train saying UNION STATION.
There's a few ways to do it, the point is you want to get on bus Line 76 (which drops you off 1 block from Droplabs). If you have a smartphone app, I suggest you download the Go Metro Los Angeles app (or try Google Maps as fejn suggested).
I take public transportation exclusively (I like being friendly to the environment) & LA's transportation/train system has improved dramatically since the trains started operating in the Summer of 1990.

So I will research accommodation and book!!
Thank you so much again for your kind research and info! I really appreciate your kindness!
See you in a few days!!!! Looking forward to meeting you all.
Drupalists are so cool! ;)
With gratitude
Jiyoung
@Jiyoung - please take care
@Jiyoung - please take care lots of pictures for us here in Asia! :)
Marckee for Short
Sure! Will do
And share my experience here with Asian drupal meetup groups. We could learn a lot. :) Thank you for your message!
Not to be confused with DCLA
I just want to let people know this is a non- LA Drupal User Group event.
It seems Christefano is hell bent on forking the LA community.
The real Drupal Camp LA will be in the summer as usual. =)
Thanks for pointing that out,
Thanks for pointing that out, philosurfer. I voted up your comment because I agree that this High Performance Drupal meetup, which is in Orange County on Tuesday, is not related to LA Drupal or DrupalCamp LA.
One Command Drupal Install
I will be giving a short presentation on installing Drupal from scratch using our automated install scripts.
And an explanation of what "one command" install means vs "one click" install.
Thanks for presenting, Jae,
Thanks for presenting, Jae, and thank you to you and Rick for having us at over at Winky Networks!
Another presentation we'll be having tonight is from Mike Carper (mikeytown2) on HHVM and what's involved in getting Drupal running on HipHop, the high performance PHP runtime from Facebook.
If there's time left and interest from tonight's attendees, I'm glad to present on how to set up a CDN with Drupal, or how to add Drush integration to Drupal modules (I know, this is more about devops than performance, but we can talk about those things, too).
