Design 4 Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Design for Drupal is about bringing the community of designers together to be a part of the Drupal community. It’s about enabling designers and themers to do great stuff, coordinate efforts, come up with crazy ideas, and build a movement to make Drupal beautiful.

For specific questions about theming and how to make Drupal look a specific way visit http://groups.drupal.org/theme-development

Notes from 3/24 IRC Session

  • $FIELD_NAME_rendered exists in CCK D6 and Fields D7 in .tpl files. This is documented in CCK advanced help (advanced help module required). Where else should this be documented? More detail at http://groups.drupal.org/node/20440.

  • Discussed the 'needs design review' issues for drupal 7. Link in left sidebar of group page. http://drupal.org/project/issues/3060/term/523.

    • What can we do to promote designers/themers to visit it?
    • promise them fame & fortune
    • have a top 10 list of most active designers (how to we measure this?)

Generic Drupal CSS Reset?

I created my own generic css reset for drupal. Is there one out there that is commonly used?

For example I hate how system.css adds a border-bottom to tbody, I always reset tbody to have border-bottom: none;

These things maybe are dependent on project but there should be a generic drupal reset css out there?

Cheers,
-justin

Displaying fields in tpl files

Displaying fields in tpl files, like the node.tpl.php files, is a common desire to designers/themers. After conversations in IRC, at drupalcon, and in the parking lots of the Internet the common thought is that you need to make calls to something like $node->content['field_FOO']['#XXX']; to get to the information.

I've recently learned that there is an easier way to get to it. According to yched, on of the gurus of CCK and fields, you can use $FIELD_NAME_rendered in your .tpl files where fields are attached. This is true in Drupal 6 CCK and Drupal 7 fields.

Theming Jobs in Academia

Hi all, I'm new to this group. My university is getting into Drupal in a big way, but mostly through lots of small-scale projects -- just how many is anyone's guess. The ability to re-theme an existing site has yet to catch on with our administrators (i.e. decision-makers, purse-holders) but I am hoping that it will, and am advocating for that. I have also served informally as a consultant for departments other than my own to help them understand how to go about contracting with designers and developers.

Drupallers, meet the Interaction Design community!

I joined the Drupal community 3 years ago and it has been instrumental in helping me to stay up to date with the latest web trends / developments. Since about 1 year, I've been using Drupal to teach my web engineering students interaction design and information architecture in a practical, hands-on way, by building prototypes with Drupal.

In my opinion, the best kept secret about Drupal is that its power is not so much the technology - a web content management framework. The power lies in the community. Unfortunately, there is still somewhat a divide between designers and developers.

Drupallers, take note of the Interaction Design community (IxDA)! If you haven't already.

I joined the ixda mailing list 3 years ago and it has contributed immensely to my personal growth as an interaction design practitioner. The in-depth design discussions in this community are a true treasure trove.

However, even with 10'000 members, I consider it still somewhat one of the internet's "best kept secrets". IMHO, the current website doesn't succeed well in representing the power of this community. Just recently, IxDA announced plans to re-launch the ixda.org website using Drupal. See Dries Buytaert's blog post about it.

There has been some talk recently at ixda about "open source user experience" and collaborating with the open source movement and learning from each other. I think this is a fantastic opportunity just waiting to happen!

Notes from 3/18 IRC Session

Welcome to all newbs.
First issue: g.d.o group has 206 members less than 2 weeks after it started.... Great news.

STYLE MANUAL & PATTERN LIBRARY
--mortendk-- mfer: and we have at least 2 themes that are build around minimum of classes etc :P

cleverclevergirl-- can we talk a bit about what the difference is between the style manual and the pattern library?
