Drupal Event Organization

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Welcome to the Drupal Event Organization group. Here we share meetup, camp, regional conference, and international conference organization tips and tricks. The event calendar should be used to announce events, not this group. Feel free to share your tips about successful events and plans, find partners to organize meetups.

There are some lists of tips for event organization:

DrupalCampLA 2008 Planning

Oh yes, it's that time..

The first one was a blast so we're doing it again. BUT we'd love your input so that we can avoid conflicts for DrupalCampLA Weekend.
Please see the wiki at http://groups.drupal.org/node/12528 and make your comments to the dates listed.

We are not open to doing this sooner - simply too many vacations, conferences, and various conflicts to make people happy. We want to enjoy summer too! Late September is left out because I'm becoming an aunt somewhere around there. Selfish? yeah. But it's about balance, right?

Ideas/feedback for the next DrupalCampPDX

At the monthly meeting we had a quick discussion of what went right and wrong at DrupalCampPDX 2008. Grant suggested putting up a wiki so that people could provide suggestions and feedback. Well here's the wiki so have at it.

Things we could have done better

  • We needed to be much more careful with our dates. Not so close to Seattle BarCamp and not on the same day as Vancouver's. We are a community and should be considerate of our region. Also, we lost attendees and program participants.
  • You could add the next point.

Community is what we make of it.

Drupal Camp Alberta 2008

Start:
2008-07-03 14:00 - 2008-07-04 23:00 UTC
Event type:
Drupalcamp or Regional Summit

DCA08 is unlike any corporate conference you've ever attended - and for good reason. Focusing on "Drupal" - an open source content management system and application framework, DCA08 is a low-cost, highly collaborative "unconference" held in at the University of Lethbridge, in Southern Alberta, Canada.

Gone are the days of sponsored vendor presentations and for-profit registration fees. Our peer taught, volunteer-run sessions will by heavy with "doers", and light on the "talkers".

Join us July 3 & 4 from 8am - 5pm both days (Networking event on July 3rd)

Upcoming Wordpress camps we can learn from and participate in

For many people Wordpress is the first open source web application they will use. It's a great introduction to open source. In past surveys, we've seen as many as 25% (don't quote me) of Drupal users indicate that they used Wordpress before using Drupal. Many people use both.

Wordpress shares the same technology stack and many of the same open source community development principles. Here are some upcoming Wordpress Camps that you might want to attend and learn from:

Cheers,

Blogging your way to Drupal event success

I've been pretty cynical in the past about blogs. I am now a convert.

For Drupalcon we identified over 70 blog posts that helped drive awareness and ultimately successful fund raising and successful attendance. For the recent Drupal testing sprint in Paris, France we used the same technique.

What worked for the testing sprint was trying to justify the expense and working on the anticipated outcomes of the sprint. We used blogging to raise awareness and attract sponsors ultimately raising funding for 8 people to attend Paris.

Nonprofit Status and Insurance

The Seattle Drupal Users Group is organizing a DrupalCamp for this summer. I'm in contact with a local university where we would like to host the event. The university is requesting that we exist as an actual nonprofit entity and that we have liability insurance. Has anyone else come across these issues before? Can the Drupal Association help here? I have contact the Drupal Association, and I'm awaiting their response, but I thought I might post here as well. Any thoughts or hints would be greatly appreciated? Is it time for our DUG to become a nonprofit?

Drupal Camp Organizing Guide

There is an effort to reorganize and rewrite this document - please see this post for additional information.

Building on the work that Nedjo did for organizing a Design sprint (Thanks Nedjo!) I'll like to get some help with refining and creating a guide for managing and hosting a Drupal Camp. Eventually I'll like to create a book page on d.o with a meetup guide, camp guide and sprint guide.

This is a work in progress, please take a few minutes to pitch in!

If you have run a camp, please share your experience. Create a new page (discussion) and link it here.

What is it?

The term camp derives from Barcamp. Barcamps are "unconferences" that are created to be the direct opposite of a formal conference (i.e. OSCon, DrupalCon, LinuxCon, etc.). Unconferences (Barcamps, Drupalcamps, etc.) are defined by the people and are for the people. The biggest difference is that unconferences do not have a set schedule until the day of the camp. Many people will provide topics before the camps but those topics and exactly who will present them are not decided until the day of the camp usually occurring during the initial "Welcome to our camps, how is everyone doing session". The purpose of a Barcamp/Drupalcamp is to get the local community to connect, and share knowledge and ideas with each other.

In segments of the Drupal community this "camp" format isn't strictly adhered to. Some Drupalcamp organizers follow a more classical DrupalCon-like organization process with a call for speakers, predetermined schedule and nominal admission fee. Using the term Drupalcamp is a useful way of designating the event as a local event, not a regional or international conference.

Focused "design sprints" - where developers get together for several days of intensive planning and produce a set of proposals for future work - are a new feature of Drupal development, having been piloted in Chicago, USA in February 2008.
