Drupal Ladder

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

About

Our goal is to get 1% of active users on drupal.org to contribute to Drupal core by 2014 by organizing "learn sprints" and "issue sprints" at Drupal User Group meetups, camps and conferences.

drupalladder.org is a central place for people to find and contribute lessons and materials. drupalladder.org is built on the Drupal Ladder distro, which people can download and use on their personal computers to work through the Drupal Ladder lessons.

The Drupal Ladder distro and drupalladder.org are products of the Boston Initiative, an experiment aiming to figure out how to make it easier for people to learn about and contribute to Drupal.

Note that we do not accept job postings or non-Drupal Ladder events in this group. Any posts that go off-topic from the goals of this group will be removed.

What about non-coders

I know the ultimate goal of Learn Drupal is to get to 1% contributing to core. My question is in regards to Learn and Issue Sprints. What about people who want to contribute, but do not write code?

I always hear, "anyone can contribute, even documentation". Where do we send people who want to contribute without writing code? We don't want to alienate them, right?

  • Do we have them verify/recreate bugs?
  • Get them to test lessons on LearnDrupa.org and see if, as newbie's or non-coders, they can follow the directions?

This is where I'm concerned we'll lose people.

Remote access to meetups

Do you offer remote access to your Drupal Meetups?
I started a group in hopes of getting Meetups with remote access listed in one place and bringing people from all over the world to your local meetups.

Plan the next meetup coordinating call

Our first call to chat about running meetup sprints was great! Let's do it again next week, after 2 groups will have gone through a meetup. I've created a Doodle for early next week. Please vote for a time that works for you. We'll close the poll and decide on a time Friday morning, April 20th at 7:00 GMT (3:00 EDT).

NOTE: there is a time zone drop down, so make sure you are looking at the proper time zone for where you are. :-)

Name of this group

As add1sun pointed out, the support requests we've been getting here indicate some confusion about the group name. This conversation has also come up in IRC, and it sounds like the name was chosen because a) a better option hadn't been proposed, and b) the domain name was available.

Is there interest in reconsidering the name? On one hand, I don't want to mess with the momentum that has been gained already, but on the other, it's clearly misleading and will almost definitely lead to further misunderstandings in the future.

Uses for this group

We're just getting ourselves organized, but I think we should probably try to come up with some guidelines for what we use this group for. Specifically I think we need to make sure that it is clear that this is not a support forum. We already have 2 support posts and that will just gets nuts. Out name makes it super confusing for newbies looking for help (which is a whole other discussion) so we should make it really clear in the group description that support posts will be removed, or we'll get way too cluttered to have a good space to focus. I also think we should state no job postings.

Learn Drupal meetup coordinating call

2012-04-16 13:00 - 13:30 America/New_York
Organizers:
Event type:
Online meeting (eg. IRC meeting)

A few of us were in IRC and talking about our various meetup plans. As we have a few meetups planned, we decided to have a Skype call on April 16 at 1pm EDT (11am MDT, 5pm UTC, 7pm CET - Find your time) so we could all meet and share thoughts and ideas. After this initial call, we'll schedule another to talk about how it all went. This call is open to anyone who is going to hold a Learn Drupal meetup, or wants to.
