The missing slide ...

sooz's picture

Hi Laura:

Sorry about the missing PopSci slide. It's one of the featured sites on the main showcase slideshow I helped Kieran put together (http://vimeo.com/1023097) and I did add it to the newspaper+journalism showcase after you noticed it was missing the first time around. I'm not sure how I managed to take it out before publishing the updated slideshow. Sincere apologies about that. I'm making an update and there will be a new slideshow update posted as soon as it's up on Vimeo ...

No apologies needed! I

No apologies needed! I thought the ; was enough of an indication that I was not upset. Still, it's nice to hear that their site is featured. :D Thanks!

My company has a network of 22 (or so) news sites all running Drupal 5.7. E.g. http://www.fiercewireless.com/ http://www.fiercefinance.com/ and http://www.fiercebiotech.com/

There's a list of all of them here: http://www.fiercemarkets.com/explore

In my (extremely biased) opinion, it's a nice demonstration of some of the things you can do to make different drupal installs work "together." For example, the "Most Read" box aggregates stories from several different Drupal installs.

oh that's you who worked on those, I've been quoting fiercebiotech several times as an example of RSS/Drupal sites

nice job!

Thanks!

One of these days I should really write up one of those "this is how we did it" posts.

Managing this many different Drupal installs presents its own unique challenges. We've also done a bit of tweaking to boost performance that others might benefit from.

Eli

That will be very helpful

edialogue's picture

For those of us who are not computer programmers, writing a how-to article will really be very helpful. We know you guys are very busy but any help you can give the rest of us will be appreciated. Can you tell me how you built the sites - the theme used, the modules deployed, how to add dates to titles...?

Thanks for responding and thanks for all your help. Greatly appreciated. Still new to Drupal and struggling to understand it.

Theme?

edialogue's picture

Which theme did you use for these sites? Beautiful sites indeed.

Any of the great sites in Drupal 6?

jkimwright-duplicate-account's picture

They do look great. I perused the sites and looked at source info and saw only Drupal 5 which included modules not available in 6. With so many sites, I didn't check them all. Does anyone know of any Drupal 6 sites?

We'll have another one to

laura s's picture

We'll have another one to add soon. Drupal 6 in fact makes the project easier than it would have been in Drupal 5.

Thanks! The short answer is

eli's picture

Thanks! The short answer is that it's a custom theme. We hired a designer for the original wireframes way back when, but the design has evolved considerably over its life.

In fact we recently completed a new round of changes. For the first time the site design isn't exactly the same site to site thanks to the subtheme technique borrowed from Zen theme. (All the sites are still running off a single Drupal install). Compare www.fiercecio.com to www.fiercewireless.com to www.fiercebiotech.com

The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) running Drupal 5 -- http://www.pilotonline.com and http://www.hamptonroads.com . It seems gazettenet.com used The Virginian Pilot's website as a model even. Both sites look good.

Good Looking Sites

edialogue's picture

These are exceptionally good looking news sites. Does anyone know the theme and modules used to build them? This information will be very useful to me and I suspect to many others. Drupal rocks.

PilotOnline Theme

Jordan.Schmitt's picture

I was one of the developers for both http://www.pilotonline.com and http://www.hamptonroads.com (Drupal 5) . The theme was made by one of our designers from scratch -- he didn't even start with Zen. This was the first Drupal project our team had ever worked (before switching to Drupal we were primarily a ColdFusion/PHP shop). As far as a list of modules many were custom made since our product people had very specific needs. The modules we used "out of the box" were pretty standard for newspaper Drupal sites -- boost, fivestar, cck, pathauto, blogger and fckeditor (this is not a complete list).

On themes, modules...

You can see details about some of them in the Success stories section. For example, a well-known case study on the New York Observer: they use a custom visual design, and a number of modules, especially CCK a lot, also Views, etc.

Designing them tabs

blueflowers,. I would really really love to know how you build the tabs "spotlight, news, features reviews". Really excellent work. Did you use the simple tabs module for this and then just theme?

Actually it was totally

blueflowers's picture

Actually it was totally custom using Jquery and Jquery Tabs (http://stilbuero.de/jquery/tabs_3/). We then created a theme function in template.php that fills the content.

Hope that answers your question! :)

Might as well toss our hat in

Very nice! What did you use

blueflowers's picture

Very nice! What did you use for the large rotating image on the homepage?

Shucks.

Ken Hawkins's picture

Shucks. -- Using jQuery Cycle to do that.

It works essentially like this:
- A view is generated using a dynamically loaded taxonomy term
- The view spits out HTML in a way that works with the Cycle plugin.

I'll give you more details on how, if you're interested.

Side note: I know the javascript file is called jCarousel.js, but it's not really. It's a long story. Cycle has a much better function to rotate the slides, IMHO.

that's a nice setup!

blueflowers's picture

I've never really looked into cycle, but the footprint seems to be much smaller then Carousel. Thanks for the direction on that!

…And there's a Cycle Lite

Garrett Albright's picture

…And there's a Cycle Lite version which is even smaller, if the only transition you need is a fade.

I'm using it for a project currently myself, and will use it for future projects most likely. It'll replace a Flash file I built myself which did pretty much the same thing. My only complaint is that instead of fading the foreground slide in over the opaque background slide, it fades the foreground slide in at the same time as it fades the background slide out, so you're able to see the background color show through as the transition happens (both slides are partially transparent). I tried to tweak the parameters in order to stop it from doing this, but everything I tried caused weird problems… In the end, it's a minor annoyance compared to being able to replace a Flash-powered thingie with a Javascript/jQuery-powered one - but if anyone knows how to fix it, please share.

Here's one we worked on recently
