GoDaddy installs Drupal using Hosting Connection

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Via this story, I see that GoDaddy now has their own auto installer, called Hosting Connection.

It installs Drupal amongst other scripts, and also includes a rating component.

We should:

  • reach out to GoDaddy and see how Hosting Connection is run and updated with Drupal out of the box
  • encourage people on GoDaddy to rate Drupal highly

I had a call with Justin at GoDaddy on Friday. He's sending a proposal to the association.

its such a bad hosting platform for DRUPAL...

but I will list the problems I had.

1... They seem to over subscribe their servers. They also seem to limit connections from the websites to the MySQL server. When that happens, especially when trying to work in the administration section, I would see a lot of timeouts.

2... then there was the problem trying to ad and remove modules. I had a lot of problems once I went over a certain number.

3... And the shared server was just slow.

With that said, I had really bad experience with 1and1. I was using Hostnine.com shared server for a while, with much better luck. But DRUPAL is a SQL intensive app, so getting a VPS is worth the investment, vs a shared solution.

The Difficulties

My experience with GoDaddy is that it presents some difficulties when working with Drupal (and probably with just about any PHP app of size):

  1. Difficult to do database loads because of their tiny file size limit and their failure to support compressed SQL files. I had to upload my database dump as a "backup recovery" to get it to work (http://technosophos.com/content/large-mysql-imports-godaddy-how-get-your...).
  2. By default, it is hard to install modules because default accounts have no shell access, and it's hard to move files around through the web interface. I ended up downloading all of the modules to my local workstation, uncompressing them, and then zipping them all into one file and loading it. Not an idea workflow.
  3. By default, GoDaddy is configured to use PHP 4 (though five is available, if you find it). That means that some common modules (ImageField, for example) appear not to work.

These are easy areas where GoDaddy could do some value-adds just by streamlining those things. I'd love to see their Drupal installer make it easy for their users to install and run great Drupal sites.
