Event type:
User group meeting

Come 12th February, and IIT Kanpur will hold FOSSkriti (under its Techkriti technical festival's banner). As the name quite well puts it, FOSSkriti deals with all Free and Open Source Software. And this time in 2009, we'll see workshops and sessions on Mozilla technologies, HTML 5, Sahana, YUI and yes, Drupal!

Me and Gurpartap will be leading a Drupal sprint on 13th February, 10PM onwards, focussed on Drupal 7 Usability. For those who follow the Drupal community, know that a formal D7 usability testing will be conducted at the University of Baltimore, 10 days before Drupalcon DC starts. We hope to help out the Usability team by reviewing and hacking on their patches before the formal testing begins. Also, we will be helping new contributors learn their way around and explain how the Drupal core machinery works :-) After all, even something as awesome as Drupal needs thousands of man-hours of work before it ships!

To participate in the sprint, you need:

  • A computer with any CVS client (*nix people have CVS, Windows has TortoiseCVS)
  • Some knowledge of PHP and MySQL (more than hello-world ;-)
  • An interest in Drupal!
  • Willingness to hack and pursue world domination.
  • We hope the hackathon is a great success and hope you have tons of fun! Do join us if you can!

Work up a list to work on

Bojhan's picture

Hey,

As I am responsible for the test plan at Baltimore, lets spend the next few days working on the list we'd like to see patched before we get to Baltimore.

Sure

Gurpartap Singh's picture

I haven't been able to finalize what exact issue/s to touch, as I don't expect the audience to be familiar with Drupal at all. Kind of awkward to choose "usability issues" when it's one of the most argued subject in issues, already. We expect around 80 attendees in the beginning and 20-30 to stay along till end. And expecting it to be a good opportunity to collect lot of Drupal "newbie" experience, guaranteed that we are ready with the right stuff to talk about before hand. Awaiting opinions/issues on your hit list or whichever could contribute to U-testing. :)

We can also touch, rather we will, more topics(not necessarily usability) than promised.

hi gurpratap

...to find you so much interested! Where are you from? It'll be more feasible for Pratul to collect them if you are in/around Delhi.

And why ain't you coming? ;)

Time :|

dipen chaudhary's picture

Well as expected time is an issue as the sprint is on a weekday and I need to make a delivery somewhere around that time. I've been reading usability research report and seeing the issue queue and feel usability to be paramount to deliver the drupal "promise". I am based in mumbai, Pratul has already sent me the address, I'll get it couriered :) I'll send 5 and good contributors/learners out of sprint can take them as souvenirs. I was overwhelmed by the response of drupal camp and I think we have great open people already using and improving drupal, we just need to communicate more often and bring all the contributions in open.

As a starter

How about re-wording the following screen when 'defaults.settings.php' has not been renamed into 'settings.php' during installation (the section in red has the error message that could be edited.)

Just renaming 'defaults.settings.php' to 'settings.php' leads to an error screen during installation due to Drupal not finding a copy of defaults.settings.php in sites/defaults.

A reminder to keep a copy of defaults.settings.php along with a blank settings.php could be added to that screen.

How about the following wording:

A settings.php file is missing in the ./sites/default folder of your Drupal install.

Rename the 'defaults.settings.php' found in ./sites/default into 'settings.php'

When the file has been renamed, re-upload another copy of 'defaults.settings.php' into the same ./sites/default folder. Not doing so can lead to errors during the later stages of the installation.

More details about the installation can be found in Install.txt

That should be a straightforward patch once the installer files with the relevant text are found. The fix can be backported to Drupal 6 since Drupal 6 has the same work flow/user flow issue.

There are a few more work flow issues which can be resolved by better text labels and information text. Perhaps if the amount of time greatly exceeds the number of bugs scheduled to be fixed, quick usability testing/bug testing can be done with mislabeled text labels and partially complete information text being patched on the fly?

http://drupal.org/node/323112 - vertical tabs for the node form.
http://drupal.org/node/304330 - input format widget
http://drupal.org/node/301902 - Allow more users to see the content administration screen
http://drupal.org/node/273137 - Split navigation into 'user' and 'administration' menu

There you go, this is from our list we need for the Usability Testing. I agree with SteveJB, that you could spend some time working on that - but its not an essential patch at the moment.
