Paid Classifieds, any ideas?

I'm really making headway into having a very usable website here, and I hope I'm not bugging anyone by asking for some expert advice.

I'm wondering how other newspapers, using Drupal 6, are handling online classifieds?

I've noticed there doesn't seem to be a workable out of the box solution for classifieds, especially if one wanted to charge someone to upload a picture, charge by the line inch, etc... But with this many newspapers using Drupal, I figure someone out there has to have done this before, and I'm just wondering what their solution was.

I know I could create a custom node type using CCK, and use views and taxonomy to categorize it, but charging for an ad taken online seems to be the monkey wrench in the system.

Any thoughts?

a couple ways...

I think you could use http://drupal.org/project/uc_node_checkout to do this. It has a particular workflow that may or may not work for you. Each ad would be a node. As they make payment it can be published. There is a great tutorial for this on Drupaleasy's site

I've done something similar using user_quota module, but unfortunately it relied on a custom payment processing system. The benefit of something like "user_quota" module is that the users could purchase credits for 10 advertisements all at once and then create them over time whenever they wan. Note: this user_quota based system is an idea, but is vaporware: you'd have to write some code (or hire someone to do so...).

There are few modules available for ads without having a defined workflow.
You have to create and attach a workflow to these modules if you use them. Make sure that modules are ported to the drupal version you are using.

i am allowed to pass along a web site that sells drupal mods? i emailed a guy who is sells paypal mod if it could be used in classified ad and how to use it. this is what he said.

"Shelley,
I have begun making plans for building a classified ads module. The module would be able to sell any content-type so it can be used for classifieds but also other things as well. It will work with the Paypal Subscriptions module for payment. I expect it to be ready for release sometime this weekend. I will keep you updated"

anyway emailed if you want his contact info.

socialtalker, I would love

socialtalker,

I would love to have that information, especially if we're talking about a module that would facilitate a web-to-print workflow.

We're considering using Kaango for our classifieds as a third party branded solution, but obviously in a day when most newspapers are downsizing, the ability to reduce that cost might help save a job in the future, so it's something I am interested in.

look in your pm

i posted his link on a thread on the drupal forum so folks could contact him directly but it was taken off that drupal forum and he is still in the act of building it, so i will pm you the link and email.

There is no private messaging on this site. Perhaps the other poster meant he'd email you?
