Thanks Jiyoung, I'v joined these groups and will spend some time to know better about these.
Have you got some marketing experience about Drupal before, any advises for China community ? :)

Life is a gift !

I don't have marketing experience about Drupal

HappyJiyoung's picture

But!
For example, I posted on most popular Korean CMS forum about Drupal Camp Seoul 2012 info.
Showing people how easy it is and powerful Drupal would be great way to market.

People never tried. Or even if they installed...they didn't see anything great about Drupal on the first impression.
That was my impression about Drupal when I played around installing(it was Drupal 6).
Even Drupal 7...you don't see anything great at the first sight.

If someone showed me distribution installation. I would be blown away.
And also if someone showed me how they build it.
Since I had experience using CMS since 2001, I would learn very fast.

It will go same with other CMS users. Also often they might want to know and learn other CMS but don't have time or energy to learn to know better.

My first immediate approach would be connecting to my former community(Korean CMS) and share what I learned and show them how I use DRUPAL in person.
I will invite them. :)
This is one thing I could do well with my situation.

If I learn, know other marketing tip that can apply to China I will share with you.
But on that group, we could learn a lot and try. :)
They also want to figure out.

@ HappyJiyoung I feel like

@ HappyJiyoung
I feel like there are two groups which Drupal should be marketing to: one is end users and the other is China based web development companies.

I know of a few people (end users) who have tried to use Drupal and simply gave up. They find it too confusing. And I would have to agree. You can tell them all you want how great drupal is, but they can't really appreciate it themselves. I feel the real benefit of Drupal is more on the development side of things. It is just so flexible and a great framework for building quick prototypes as well as full fledged websites and apps.

This makes me wonder whether the real target should be development companies themselves. I am not sure what CMS platforms they are using for development, but surely these people are better placed to really see and understand the benefits of using Drupal. If more companies develop in Drupal for their clients, then people will become more familiar with it.

Of course it is more complicated than that. One obvious problem is that even if a Chinese development company wants to develop in Drupal, they first have to find developers familiar with it. I believe finding good local Drupal talent is another difficulty which needs to be solved.

You are right~

HappyJiyoung's picture

"Drupal talent" can be made.

If someone showed them how to use Drupal in person...it would be so much faster and easier to learn it!
If someone already used other CMS and had some experience, they can learn faster!

I tried to learn Drupal by myself with video tutorials and I feel now I am over learning curve and I can boost my learning speed.

But if someone showed me...I feel I can become the "Drupal talent" fast.

This is why I want to share my knowledge to real beginners or someone even don't know Drupal as a part of Drupal community member(I am over 6 months old now with Drupal).
Personal sharing...personal training, personal exchange is the best way to boost growth, adoption, helping the community.
That's what I believe and I want to share what I can. :)
I wish/hope other Drupaler who knows more than me would like to share what they know sometimes or a little...
Maybe we can start sharing like this and slowly growing together.

I agree

I found very hard to find Drupal developers in Beijing, the most used Cms in china (from my experience) are locally made and one of the reasons is the language or at list this is what they tolde me.

I think is very important first for developers to learn more about Drupal and spread the love, we try to educate our developers on Drupal but it will be nice if more meetings and presentations was available also I think a good start it it will be if more Drupal videos was available in yokou (no YouTube in china)

Right!

HappyJiyoung's picture

That's why I am gonna give my downloaded free tutorial viseos to anyone wants them.
Plus I will suggest other company if they wpuld be interested in uploading their free
Videos on YouKu.
They don't know the situation in China that well.
Theu might not know they are missing out big part of population in the world.
Good point!!
:)

I think the issue about

begun's picture

I think the issue about videos is very valid. I have found that in some cases drupal documentation will point to a particular video tutorial (which in most cases are located on Youtube). Obviously this makes things difficult if you are in China.

I once had this issue and contacted Lullabot about it, offering to post their video on Youku. They were more than happy for me to do so and offered to send me the file.

I think when Drupal association talks about localization, it is important to consider documentation, including videos. One thing we can do as users is to note when we come across links to videos in the documentation, and then try to contact the owner, asking them to add a link to youku for China based users.

Agree.

Another thing in China

HappyJiyoung's picture

I posted on Beijinger and other expat forum site about the Happy Hour casual networking meetup coming up on 20th.
I invited other people in the similar industry like web, IT, SEO etc...

But I think we should invite anyone who like to see/know/learn about drupal and show them, introduce them Drupal.

There are many sectors and people with different background and purpose they could use/benefit from Drupal.

-hobby, passion
-personal use, blog with more powerful tool
-NGO
-Community leaders, groups
-business
-career seeking, students who want to get a job or change job

The more people know/hear/learn Drupal the better marketing...it can be.
Have you done Hello Drupal or free intro to average people? Not only at the university?
Also I am thinking of sharing my video files(it's Open video, tutorials) on my laptop or disk to Chinese or people who can't download or view them...so many free resources on YouTube, Vimeo...etc...
Then we can spread out slowly...and the people who learn from us could also spread out.
I think it's really important to spread out and share...not only consuming to spread out Drupal adoption.

I just posted a message about

I just posted a message about the meet up on the Beijing Linux User Group site.

Thanks!! :)

@HappyJiyoung I am not sure

@HappyJiyoung

I am not sure if you are aware, but currently there is quite an active push by a group of Chinese Drupal users to improve Drupal adoption in China. They had their first online meetup recently and have a second one planned for 22 September. They have done a lot it terms of looking at the issues with Drupal adoption in China and I believe are taking a coordinated approach to improve localized documentation and establishing a Chinese Drupal community.

I just thought I would bring it to your attention in case you are not aware of it (all their work is in Chinese so it is possible you may have missed it). It seems to me that we should be considering if or how best to cooperate or at least coordinate any efforts with these guys.
