Hi, I am Subir Ghosh. I run Newswatch (www.newswatch.in). I am essentially a journalist, but I create my own sites too. Newswatch is based on WordPress. It was made with NucleusCMS earlier. And then I had to migrate to WordPress because of its robust category structure and of course perfect search results. I have a created a few other magazine sites for a few friends.. all using WordPress. It was a toss-up between WordPress and Drupal and I settled for the former. Primarily because of its more design flexibility, pagination possibilities, etc. Drupal I feel is more solid and has a steep learning curve too. But I don't think they are deterrents. For me, at least, WordPress suited more. It was not a question of which is better or worse. The problem with all these CMSs is that they have been created by IT professionals. There is still not a perfect opensource CMS for a newspaper or a magazine. I like EZ Publish too. Wish I had the time to tinker around with it.

Hi Subir, I´m from

Hi Subir,
I´m from Argentina, and run a site from an NGO, that have an online magazine.
I´ve never tried WordPress before, but I did try MT, NucleusCMS, EZ Pubish and some more stuff out there.
I definately vote for Drupal. I´m not a programmer myself, but I can tell, that all Blogs and CMS´s have a more or less difficult learning curve.
Sometimes, you just feel too lazy to think of a change (that happened to me sometimes), but you should give Drupal a chance, because it´s terrific. I can tell, that with Drupal you can do almost EVERYTHING.
When you want to add funcionality you just use the modular structure, and the taxonomy (categorization of content) makes Drupal very flexible indeed, and powerful.
Have you visited theonion.com or NowPublic.com?
Those are Drupal sites, and are big fat news sites... and they are pretty nice too!

Don´t give up on Drupal before you tested it ;-)

Agreed and disagreed

You got me wrong, Rosamunda. I never said I haven't tested Drupal. I said Wordpress suited me more. At least for www.newswatch.in.

In fact, the members section (essentially for networking only) is built on CivicSpace (yeah, the day I installed I had problems downloading Drupal 4.5; but essentially all Drupal).

The main site was originally built with NucleusCMS, before I switched over to Wordpress some months back. Because it suited me. For me it is not a question so much of which is better, but which suits me more. I am planning a new site (news-intensive). And that WILL HAVE TO BE made with Drupal.

I'm between those two CMS's...

Hello everybody, greetings from MExico.

I have been learning about CMS's for only three weeks and I haven´t decided yet wich one to use. I'm trying to set a Health magazine up. My first attempt it's at http://revistahrv.wordpress.com but it's only a blog.

I've try to use joomla but the only way to acomplish what I want was to buy the iJoomla Magazine module, but it's too expensive for me by now.

Then I aimed for Campsite, but I could never understand how to install it on the server my boss hired, same happend with TextPattern. LAter came Jaws and some others... but I still can't make'em work for me.

Now I ask Rosamunda and newswatch...How could you make drupal and wordpress work in order to get a decent web magazine ??? I know it's not an overday result, but I want to know how to start my path.

Right now I have both CMS on the server, but I can't get wordpress modules or plugins to hack it to manage and look like a magazine.,.. same for drupal... For drupal I have epublish module, but I can't get to know how to make my site start engines.

Thanks in advance for your help

How to

lopolencastredealmeida's picture

Hi,

Do you plan to have an how-to on that nice project?
I suppose you organize stuff in the frontpage using categories, right?
Any special plugins?

Best,
Lopo

I am not sure what you mean

I am not sure what you mean by organising in terms of categories.

If you mean segregation of the stories/blocks, the answer is yes. But not always. In another site I made recently, some of the blocks are a combination of certain categories. While some others are purely on basis of conditional statements. Like this site www.write2kill.com (my personal site).

There is a Tech Credits link on the menu. It lists all the plugins I had used.

How to? :D ... I had never thought of that before :)

the onion!
