Hello Everyone,
I am very happy to announce and share with you my site which I have been working on non-stop for almost the past three months. I'd like to also take this time to thanks every single person in the Drupal community. It is quite remarkable what a great and productive community this is and I am very happy to be part of it.
(josh_k adds: digg it here)
I joined Drupal.org toward the end of January (or close) and it was the first I actually ever gave Drupal CMS a shot. The funny thing is that after my first time using it I didn't like it and deleted it off my system. Thankfully I came back a few days later with some more patience and realized that it was the best CMS out there. I think most new comers have this problem as well, and I hope these posts help prevent this from happening to them. At first, it definitely seems that Drupal isn't capable of much. Now I am trying to figure out things that it can't do.
What I have learned in the past few months is pretty amazing. If you take a look at the site, I think you will get a pretty good idea. It is nothing special, but given the time frame, I am pretty proud of myself. The site follows a theme I believe most people in this community would be interested in. To sum things up, its a user-driven site dedicated to technology, computing, and the Internet. All submitted content comes in the form of written articles or web links and are tutorials, guides, howtos, information, new software, etc.
I would really like to take this opportunity to allow everyone to ask whatever questions they might have regarding anything at all. I would love to offer as much help as I can, as the same was offered to me. Instead of me rambling on and on about what was done for the site, I think its best to just allow everyone to ask what they want.
The site was reviewed on a blog at Wired.com, which was extremely cool to see. If you want to see the article you can go here : http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/03/tweako_a_social.html
Also, if you want to support the site, or drupal in general, you could give the story an extra digg: http://digg.com/tech_news/Tweako_A_Social_News_Site_For_Tutorials
Thanks alot,
Mike

Very nicely done
I notice the site feels zippy - do you have caching on? Any other performance tweaks you can share?
That is great to hear. Yes
That is great to hear. Yes there are some things I have done, and I hope to put some time in to some more tweaking.
So far I have installed eAccelerator, which caches and optimizes php greatly. This dramatically reduces load time and cpu usage.
I have added compression and cache to tinymce. After doing some research I found out that on every single page load tinymce would have to be reloaded, even if it doesn't show up (which is crazy). There are like 30+ buttons included that take a while to load. The cache allows for a one time download per client. I had to use the older version of the compressor because there seemed to be computability problems with the new one and 4.7
The absolute biggest improvement was when I moved the MySQL server off on to a separate machine. There is practically nothing at all running on that machine but the sql server and so far it is working perfectly.
I know this is a simple one but all of the images are png's which are much smaller than jpgs (if any of you use them). I tried to avoid using as many images as possible.
I think that is really it though.
Oh yes, one more thing.
Oh yes, one more thing. Depending on when you visited, this might not even of affected you. but I recently enabled the drupal cache with a 3 minute life in preparation for a potential "digging". Its up to 52 diggs which is awesome.
I will probably have to up this a little if it actually makes it to the front.
wow
469 diggs!
Well i spent all night
Well i spent all night hacking away to get frjo's remote story submission to actually work properly. I am not 100% done but it works. I'd love some feedback on the procedure because I know it is not the best out there.
I also added Revenue Sharing for users - so come over and check it out..
