Can only group managers send email?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

An admin in my group gets access denied. Ideally, group admins should be able to send email?

Access denied on email tab

Vancouver group, torelad@drupal.org (http://groups.drupal.org/user/171). Gets access denied on viewing the email tab.

repeatable

The dojo group had the same problem with user senpai.

Our solution was to get him higher privileges on g.d.o in general, but that's obviously not a great solution for all users.

I don't have higher privs sitewide

senpai's picture

Greggles, I reported this issue some time ago, but couched it as a privileges problem relating to the admin accounts on drupal-dojo. I had no idea this was a g.d.o. wide problem, or I'd have been eager to follow up and help sort things out.

Moshe, I'll tell you how my account looks to me, and hopefully it gives you a better idea of what might be going on. Here's what I experience as an admin of the drupal-dojo group. I have node editing privs for the entire group, but no comment editing privs other than my own comments. I do not see an Email tab at any time, nor do I see any "send email" type link in the Maintenance block. I can create Poll, Event, Job, Story, or Wiki content.

I think that you, me, and josh_k decided that in order for me to get access to the Email feature, I'd have to become a g.d.o. admin, not just a group admin. We never implemented that step, however, like Boris says, it shouldn't be necessary.

Happy Hunting!

Correction, the Email tab is now visible.

Greggles just fed me the direct link for sending email to the drupal-dojo group, and holy cow! There it is! The tab is now there, and although I haven't actually tested the send mail form, it appears to be working. I'll use it for this Sunday's lesson, just to test things out.

All is well on my account now. Woo!

my bad

moshe weitzman's picture

this is a bug in og that has persisted for some time. admins are not getting all the powers they should get. they can't even manage subscriptions. i can't eblieve noone reported this until today. i want to sort out the private groups issue and then fix this.

fixed this major bug

moshe weitzman's picture

i just updated this site to latest og, which fixes this bug. please let me know if this persists.

Dale tracked it down

boris mann's picture

From Dale:

I tripped over the cause of the group management bug. Could you pass
this along?

At the inception of Groups I created a gdo account named torelad that
didn't seem to work (I was probably too fast off the mark). I started
using my Drupal.org account, torelad@drupal.org, which did work. I just
re-discovered the forgotten torelad account and renamed it to Dale, and
the management tabs have magically appeared for torelad@drupal.org.

new permission

While I know that moshe is concerned about pref bloat in OG - ezra has added a specific permission that allows "e-mail all members" http://drupal.org/node/158370 to be given in a more controlled/granular way.
