We have a problem with our news site. Maybe its not such a big problem but we dont know how to take on the problem.
We do hyperlocal news which means that if a car breaks down in town or something happens like the lights stay on all night in the streets we report that, however, We also do global news which is our main focus.
Does anyone have any tips on how to mix this in Drupal without screwing up the Google News rankings etc? Hyperlocal news and Global news on the same site?

An ideological issue
This sounds to me more like an ideological issue rather than a technical one.
We too mix local news with international news on our site. This works for our newspaper as we know our readers picking it up are going to be coming from the city.
Online however, locally based visitors might be interested in both local and international news, but international visitors aren't interested in a car that breaks down in town.
This is obviously important for advertisers.
Personally, I think you need to either have two sites or else make the decision to focus on one or the other.
I have always been of the opinion that we shouldn't be simply trying to replicate the newspaper online (and hoping for the best).

Just as mentioned above, you are better of breaking the niches into two and you can still cross link both.
International news is one thing, road alert is a completely different niche and appeals to a different audience
. set them up as two different businesses, and focus on promoting one very well till it builds momentum, and you can focus on the other if you don't have the capability to focus on both
