Open Calais or Drupal Taxonomy

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I am building a site around musical instruments such as Piano, Guitar, Drums, etc. Basically content will be written about the instrument and categorized by state. So the thought was to build the taxonomy with US sates under each state have all the musical instrument categories mention above. While daunting I think this was achievable. Now the requirements are to go down to the city level so end users can read and subscribe to say articles written about guitar in Phoenix, AZ. The city requirements take this to an entirely new level.

I came across the following article at Lullabot Inroducing Calais. Could this be used as a replacement for creating a taxonomy like mentioned above. The end goal is to categorize content by instrument category, city and state but with Drupal there are many ways to achieve the same result. I am looking for some guidance and advice from others. Thank you - Chules

Calais uses taxonomy

Unless it's changed radically since I looked under the hood, the OpenCalais module stores extracted terms in Drupal taxonomy vocabularies. The purpose of OpenCalais is text analysis and term extraction.

So you still need to build the taxonomy and then Open Calais will extract the terms of say an article. Really, what I need is to have all US States and Cities as a taxonomy. Cities under the states. Under cities then would be to create terms such as Guitar, Piano, Drums, etc under each city. It would be a very large taxonomy and I am looking for the best way to build this.

Creates its own vocabularies

OpenCalais creates its own vocabularies and populates them with terms dynamically. I'd suggest that you install it and run it on some example content so you can get the picture. You can enable and disable various sets of vocabularies, and they appear on a separate tab. The extracted terms also can be edited.

I would not suggest that you create instrument terms as children of cities; rather you should create separate a vocabulary of instruments and use Views to create a display of "guitars" in "springfield."

Yelvington,

Thank you for the reply and the suggestion to create separate vocabularies for instruments. I believe that taxonomy will work for me and will checkout Open Calais as well. I guess what I really need is a way to populate a vocabulary for US states and Cities and then create another for Instruments. The challenge is finding a way to populate US States and Cities. States are easy but there are so many cities. Do you know of any data source and process to populate this taxonomy.

Thank you - chules
