I've installed a new spam module and removed CAPTCHA.module. The new module analyzes the contents of comments and node submissions and assigns a spam score. If the module is unsure, the user may see a CAPTCHA. But usually, the module just allows the right stuff proceed without challenge.
Please let me know if you see spam or if you hear of authors getting stopped incorrectly.
Update: The new spam module is in alpha testing right now, and I'm not able to discuss its particulars.

Sweet!
I was just about to suggest this one again :P
Can't edit newsletter page anymore
The newsletter is pretty spammy with all those links. ;-) We can't edit it anymore.

EDIT: I should add that we don't get the captcha prompt at all.

That's a neat trick....we'll have a look.
Hmm
I just had a simple 1 line comment get flagged as spam. Doesn't seem to work very well. I did get the captcha prompt, though.
... and it thinks this comment is spam, too. I think I like the old way better where you just get a captcha every once and a while.

Problems adding event
Hi,
I'm not sure why exactly, but I'm trying to post a user group meeting for australia/sydney and its telling me the spam service is unavailable so I can't post anything till its fixed. (hopefully it will let me post this comment)

Still an problem
Hope I"m not missing something, but I've tried this again and its still having issues. This is the error I'm getting:
"The spam filter that is installed on this site is currenly not available. Per the site's policy, we are unable to accept new submissions until that problem is resolved. Please try resubmitting the form in a couple minutes."
I can't post an user group event in the sydney or australia groups (i'm trying to cross post in both groups).

File Attachments Not Working Properly
Not sure if this is related, but it's nearly impossible, it seems, for files to be attached now (and was no problem a few days ago).
I've tried adding images to the Newsletter wiki, but they either don't go in at all, or sporadically. No rhyme or reason I can find right now...

allow some roles to bypass captcha (or one captcha per session)
I'd propose that certain roles (or a new role) be permitted to bypass the captcha, or at least enter no more than one captcha per sesssion. I am being asked to enter a captcha every time I edit a wiki page. Yes, if needed I would volunteer to maintain this role :)
+1. This captcha is getting tedious...
...to have to enter over and over again. And it's somewhat annoying clicking on "Post comment" only to be greeted by
... and then having to type in the barely-readable captcha and then having to submit it again.
My eyesight is starting to be affected...and my sanity. ;) Seriously, I can barely read the captcha letters and numbers I'm being asked to type. Any improvement(s) would be greatly appreciated as I'm sure I'm not the only one suffering. OK, that's all for now as I'm now late to my optometrist's appointment. ;)

Dries and team are working
Dries and team are working on the spam module. Let's be patient.
I also requested a feature that a user should have to pass no more than 1 captcha per session. Meanwhile, i will not let any roles bypass the captcha on this site. That's a recipe for letting our usual users suffer while admins get a better experience.
vision impaired friendly - but not admins
I don't think the audible version is very usable. I tried the it several times and have no clue what it is saying. It also relies on javascript which is surprising and sad. So, one benefit of allowing a role to bypass this is that it would solve the vision impaired problem as well.
I think we should create a new role for this and still require most authenticated and admins to use the captcha. I'd be happy to continue using the captcha while letting a different role skip the captcha. When I discussed this idea with mfb in irc I requested he add that point (cough, cough).
I think that the "once per session" solution will work quite well so assuming that's done soon it's probably not a problem.

Can you compare the audio
Can you compare the audio against the audio for recaptcha? I listened to ReCaptcha audio and it was pretty hard to follow. If Mollom is much worse, please send feedback to them.
discussed and sent
The quality of the voice is not as much of a problem as the fact that it requires javascript.
I discussed this last week and also just mailed a followup.

No Events?
Hi,
Its been a few days now and I still can't post an event to the group. It sounds like people are improving the spam filter, but shouldn't we be able to add content in the mean time? Am I just missing something?

Further Info
I have tried doing some experiments, and this seems to be a particular issue with the timezone field. I was able to create my event by not specifying the timezone (which makes the times actually wrong, but at least it is posted). When I try to add the correct timezone, I get the same message as before regarding the spam module.

Same problem
I was also unable to post an event when the timezone was set. I had to unset the timezone and only then the captcha would appear.
Bug confirmed
It doesn't matter what dates are set in the Event node, nor if there's dates there at all. The "spam filter that is installed on this site is currently not available" bug crops up when the timezone set set to anything but the default of NULL when the node/add/event form is submitted.
If the node has already been created, and the timezone gets set during node/edit, however, and then you adjust the times, you can get the form to show a captcha, but then, upon submittal, the form loops around without saving the node and shows you a captcha again. And again.

Just hit this bug myself. Should I specify the time in GMT even though it's an event at Drupalcon Boston? In any case would be great to have it fixed.
disbaled for events
i have disabled the spam module for events. we'll enable once the authors figure out whats happenning. meanwhile, i welcome feedback about how it works on non event posts.
Captcha 3.x has this nice
Captcha 3.x has this nice feature where you can set it to only prompt once per session (or similar) - saves it showing up every time you edit the same post. I'd really like that - filling out the captcha the third time you edit the same wiki page with the same links gets a bit old :)
Spam Update?
Hi,
Just curious if the spam module is still considered in alpha. I noticed mention of "mollom' and found the website - is this what is being used here? would you recommend using it on a production site? or would you recommend a different solution - the two features I really am looking for are only one captcha per session and/or only seeing a captcha if the post appears to be spam.

mollom
I figured out it was mollom when I tried to delete a spam comment some time ago. I think it was the week before the con? It sounds like a really useful service now that they've worked some of the kinks out of it. I tried to sign up for it on their site but it didn't work. I left a message via the contact tab but never got a response. It's disappointing because the site makes it sound like it's open for the public but I guess it's not ready, yet.

I imagine we'll be hearing more news about this service as it matures and is ready for public consumption.

accessibility update?
That may have been in a post about the the old CAPTCHA's accessibility problems at http://groups.drupal.org/node/7832. Does anyone know how the new CAPTCHA works for screen readers and the blind?
