Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

The Morse Institute Library lies just northeast of the town common, nestled deep within the heart of Natick Center. Among all the sites selected as possible drupal meetup locations, this was the one we had our hearts set on. The mist-shrouded Natick Center region provides the Library with a beautiful backdrop painted with a palette of seasonal colours and an abundance of traffic and commuters from the T-stop nearby. It is all of these attributes combined that makes the Morse Institute Library the ideal spot for talking drupal

Last meeting

We had a terrific turnout at our last meeting. Many people participated in the lightening talks and the resulting conversation was really interesting. Boston builds spectacular Drupal sites. For our next meeting, we'll try out a bigger room in a new location at a new time ...

New venue

Our next meeting will be hosted by John Eckman of Optaros.

10 Milk St Boston
11th Floor
This is the same building as 294 Washington street - across from the Borders book store, wrapped around the Old South Meeting house.
Map

Lightning Talks

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to present for 5 minutes on a topic of their choosing. You may show off your Drupal site, ask some questions of the audience, give a module demonstration, share some marketing ideas for Drupal, and so on. Just keep it brief. No expertise required - just do it.

Dinner

After the meetup, some of us will continue the conversation over dinner at a nearby restaurant. Destination unknown.

Any XML/XSL people?

Can anyone recommend someone with reasonable skill on XSL stylesheets? If you do then please send them my way. I've got a local organization facing an upgrade from PHP4 to PHP5 that will effect the way their current XSLT operation will work, particularly in the date functions neighborhood. We're only talking about two stylesheets that need to be adapted so it should be fairly superficial (right?).

HOWTO: Send email acknowledgement to addresses in CCK Email fields

How do I: When a new node is created by an anonymous visitor, how do I trigger an email to be sent to the email address stored in a CCK Email field ?

Scenario: Continuing with the scenario in HOWTO: Auto-create a cryptic URL Path, when an anonymous user creates a new node and puts their email address in a CCK Email field, I want to automatically send an acknowledgment to the email addresses stored in one or more email fields.

HOWTO: Auto-create a cryptic URL Path

How Do I: When creating a new node, auto-create a cryptic URL path, similar to a "Replication ID" (like this: www.thesite.com/C560E5B2-6459-478C-A913-4C895D7D046C). Can I do this with some special token?

feedback on a recommendations for a nonprofit

Hi,

I'm looking for feedback on a set of recommendations I'm putting together for a Boston-area non-profit.

The non-profit takes volunteers from local corporations and matches them with local non-profits on short-term projects--for example, past projects have created or upgraded static websites. The non-profit would like to move towards a cms and after doing some of their own initial research, asked me to look into Drupal.

HOWTO: Convert node to a different node type

I know this is simple, but I haven't taken time to figure it out. So...how do I convert a node from one content type to another (e.g., from book page --> story)? When I do, does the node remain in the book outline?

Boston Area Drupal in Education meetup

Erik Britt-Webb and I are organizing a meetup for the evening of November 3rd in Newton. The idea is for it to be the first of many meetups where people using Drupal in education and training in the Boston area get together for talks, workshops, coding sessions, etc. Post if you are interested and let us know what you would like to do at the meetups.

Is there life in a Providence meet up?

I drove to my first non-lullabot/non-drupalcon meetup in Boston last week. It was great to see all the good work people have been doing with Drupal. However, I'd like to cut my commute down from Boston to Providence. I'm located in Fall River and would even be interested in starting a South Coast chapter if no one is interested in the Providence area.

How To: Show a node's OG associations?

OK...Following Ethan's comment and Moshe's reply about using this group to create a log/list of challenges and resolutions for Drupal implementations, here is a really simple one.

When displaying a node, how do I show the Organic Groups with which that node is associated, the way it's done on this site? I have OG installed on a couple of sites, but this feature doesn't seem to be provided out of the box. I'm guessing it's something that has been added to this GDO theme.

Any Interest in a Boston Area Drupal Jam Session?

Great discussions yesterday at the Meetup and dinner afterwards. I talked with a few people about the idea of holding a Drupal Jam Session every so often, like once or twice a month. The idea would be to host a "working meeting", where people come expecting to work on their own projects, but also have time for "lightening talks" where they share any particular challenges they are facing and seek input on how to tackle them.

The goal of these Jam Sessions is two-fold:
1. Get out and socialize with fellow Drupalers, thereby reinforcing the local Drupal community

Great to see everyone at the Boston meetup

It was good to see everyone at the Boston meetup last night. There were some awesome presentations of member's drupal sites + I was impressed with the group dynamic. Everyone was ready to dig in + help with member's questions and ideas. I especially liked this site: http://www.thehvoice.com which uses panels + node queue to a achieve a nice energy.

Western Mass Drupal Meetup - Tuesday, November 11, 2008 @ 6:00 pm

Start:
2008-11-11 18:00 - 20:00 America/New_York
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

The next Western Mass Drupal Meetup will be on Tuesday, November 11.

Location:
Webster 102 on Amherst College campus
https://www.amherst.edu/users/H/dhamilton/drupal_meetings

Many thanks to David Hamilton for again arranging the space.

AGENDA:
1. Organic Groups - discussion on how it works. http://drupal.org/project/og
2. How to deal with development versus production sites? If you do changes on a development site while in the meantime content is constantly added to the production site, how do you get both sites in sync when ready to go live with changes? How best to sync MySQL databases?
AFTER MEETING NOTE:
Found this great article after the meeting: http://drupal.org/node/199771
3. How to automatically backup a Drupal site: database and files. What methods are there? Do these work well: http://drupal.org/project/backup http://drupal.org/project/backup_migrate ?
AFTER MEETING NOTE:
At the meeting these were recommended:
http://drupal.org/project/backup_migrate (to backup the database)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/automysqlbackup/ (to backup the database)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rsync (for backing up the database backup file and other files)
http://www.navicat.com/ (MySQL manager)
Also mentioned during the discussion was http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpshell (“A convenient interface to execute shell-commands”)
4. Using Google Maps in Drupal; GMap module: http://drupal.org/project/gmap
5. How to use hook_form_alter(). Excellent resource: http://www.lullabot.com/articles/modifying-forms-5-and-6
6. Updating Drupal sites and using http://drupal.org/project/update_status Also, can you jump versions (e.g. 5.1 to 5.12)? Does it depend? How can you tell? If you have tons of updates to do, should you backup the database between every one?

I hope everyone had a nice summer recess. We restart our meetings on October 7 the same place as our June meetup. Hosting ... again ...

I know I have asked this question before, and I got great responses about hosting a drupal site.
I have one site, at one domain, at SiteGround, and though there is no phone support, I haven't had any problems ... yet.
The last thread warned us to stay away from Site5, and so I will.

My brother wants a web-site for his small business, and based on his needs: web-hosting, email, bandwidth, etc.
I wanted to find something that would meet his needs, start small and add services as needed.
There's going to be about 4 domain names just sharing the same drupal instance.
