Should Drupal.org participate in political issues?

Recently, the Association posted a discussion here in groups (https://groups.drupal.org/node/398548) which resulted in the Association registering Drupal.org to participate in TheDayWeFightBack (https://drupal.org/node/2188053). As we have discussed, there were technical issues we could have addressed differently (see the discussion: https://groups.drupal.org/node/407283), but we also heard from many community members who felt that Drupal.org should never be involved in any kind of political campaign at all.

Technical Lessons Learned: The Day We Fight Back

There certainly was a lot of discussion generated by Drupal.org's participation in TheDayWeFightBack. I did want to report that the campaign did a great job, generating over 180,000 emails and nearly 90,000 phone calls to the American Congress on the issue.

I really appreciated the comments and wanted to follow up on just two aspects of the discussion:

The technical implementation of the banner
The Association's messaging about the initial discussion

Volunteer or Contractor? Help the Association Answer This Question

Overview

The single biggest reason that the Drupal Association is such a great place to work is the Drupal community. You all dedicated your blood, sweat, and tears to make Drupal amazing, and that includes work on Drupal.org, our community’s home. As the organization charged with maintaining Drupal.org, we’ve relied on a pastiche of volunteer support, contractors (at various rate scales), and staff. One of the side effects is that there is a lot of confusion - what role should staff play? When do we hire contractors? When is it ok to ask someone to volunteer their time vs. pay them for it?

Should Drupal.org participate in the Internet freedom movement at TheDayWeFightBack.org?

To participate, we would add a banner to the homepage on 11 February. Sample (not final) banner can be seen on the organizing site: https://thedaywefightback.org/.

The Drupal Association, which is responsible for Drupal.org is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in the United States. We do have restrictions on political lobbying as a 501(c)3 but this kind of activity is perfectly legal for us to undertake.

As a bit of history, Angie Byron (webchick) shared some previous history for Drupal.org and advocacy issues:

Use of the Drupal Trademark and Drupal Association

Today I received a very polite email via my Drupal.org contact page from a member of the Drupal Association requesting that I remove the Drupal Association from the list of clients on my company website, as they have no record of doing business with us. That is correct - we were hoping to build the Drupal TV website, but that didn't happen.

The strange part was that I was also asked not to use the phrase "Drupal Support" on our website, but instead use something like "Company X support for Drupal". The D.A. member acknowledged that I mentioned that Drupal is a trademark registered to Dries Buytaert, but apparently that isn't enough.
