The Grand Rapids Drupal User Group (GRupal) is a collection of developers, designers, content managers, and businesspeople who use Drupal personally or professionally. We meet monthly, at 6PM on the first Monday of the month, at The Factory (38 Fulton S. West, Suite 400). Our meetings involve presentations on technical topics, assistance with each others' projects, and social time for networking and relaxation.

Organic Groups Support
Hey All,
I am having some trouble with my organic groups setup, and since I won't be able to make it to the meeting this coming monday, i thought I would just post it here. and see if any of you have any experience with this. I also posted it to the Organic Groups issue tracker.
October Drupal Freelancer Meetup
It's time to get ready for our September meetup. We would like to get as many Drupal freelancers there as possible, as well as any companies looking for Drupal developers.
If anyone has any good resources or would like to present some best practices for freelancers in general, as well as Drupal specific practices (such as not editing core etc.) we could use some presenters for this event. If no one wants to take the lead we can just have a general discussion and maybe connect some businesses with developers.

Hello fellow West Michiganders!
I have been working with Drupal for a few years now (more as a hobby than anything else) including developing TulipTime.com and WhtsUpHolland.com. TulipTime.com is getting a redesign in the near future and WhatsUpHolland.com I built just to see what I could do with views, gmaps, and other modules.
Recently I also created a couple apps to help people who are new to Drupal. You can read more about the apps at Noteboomproductions.com.
Being that this group is local to me, I thought I'd pass on some free codes for these apps as first come, first serve.

Drupal meetup is a couple of weeks away, but let's start brainstorming.
One thing I've noticed is we are getting a lot of requests for freelance work, and I'm not sure that as both individuals and the GRupal community, we know how to respond. A good use of the next meet-up might be to put together a list of best practices, discuss realistic expectations that contractors and contractees should have. We can then organize all of these into some sort of online reference page.
We're a fledgling community in GR, and my two cents is this is worth putting all our brains together, especially since we have some members who have been doing this for their firms who could give us advice.
And of course, we'll have a recap of our presence at BarCamp and then off to Winchester for drinks and chatter.

I just wanted to point out how fancy pants these kids are over in DC:
I've followed Development Seed's blog for quite some time now, and they do this for nearly every Drupal meetup.

Hello All,
I wanted to introduce myself virtually before I arrive in town permanently. My name is Jonathan Pichot, I'm a recent graduate of Pacific Union College, a small liberal arts school in California. Before finishing there, though, I had spent my Junior year at Aquinas College. I also have family in Grand Rapids, so I know the town well.

Drupal time.
Does anyone have anything they want to present on? Any new suggestions?
We have themes and CCK as outstanding topics that people want to hear about, but no one is ready to present on them yet.
I propose we make a plan do so some sort of presentation on Drupal at http://www.barcampgr.org. We can spend the meetup time developing the presentation.
Another thing we could do is a module/theming show and tell, where you show a module you really like, or a theming trick. I can certainly fill at least 15 minutes, and if a couple other people do the same we are in business.

July GRupal meetup
Let the brainstorming begin! At the last meetup, proposed topics for July included:
- Triggers
- Theming
- CCK
- Inheritance and extending themes
-
- Subtheming
- Image cache node/API
Nobody in the room felt like they could speak on triggers. Drupal 7 also came up, but we're going to park that till August.

Formalizing list of content
All sites need:
- CCK: Lets you format your post into more than just a blog post
- Views: Lists that information (system that is between Drupal and database for queries)
Views is not:
- Not a UI (UI is just a utility)
- UI is optional, unnecessary overhead

drupal on Ning?
Does anyone have any experience using Drupal to customize Ning, is this even possible, or desired? I am new to Drupal, and a casual user of Ning, looking to brand a company's Ning site, and didn't know what would work.
any pointers or thoughts are more than welcome,
thanks,

Read moreClasses in Grand Rapids/Holland?
I was at the meeting yesterday (great topic/demos btw) and I realized that I should probably take a few PHP, MySQL, design classes. Does anyone have any suggestions for organizations, colleges, etc that teach those kinds of classes?
OR any introduction books that you think are worthwhile? I'd rather take classes and be able to get feedback from an instructor but I know thats not always available.
Any input would help a lot! Thanks!

Hi Everyone,
Just joined the GR group and wanted to introduce myself. My name's Tracy and I'm just starting to learn Drupal. I've been using Wordpress for the past few years and I've got to say... Drupal is VERY different. I have a couple of questions for you guys:
- I'm wondering when the next local meeting is and if the content discussed would be WAY over my head. I've picked up a book to learn from but it's been a real slow process.

From Dan:
We talked a bit about doing a "views show and tell" at the next meeting. It might be interesting to anyone who has recently built a view to show others what it does and how it was built. We could say: each person has 15 minutes or whatever. --just a thought.
Any other ideas?
