CPU Load at over 20% for single processes

I've got a server performing badly at the moment - giving 500 Internal Server error every couple of page refreshes. There are just over 1700 users online at present.

I've checked top, and it's showing me six occurrences of the httpd command using over 10% of the CPU each - with one or two being over 20%, and occasionally over 30%. I've attached a snapshot of the top command in case there's useful information on there I've missed off.

Mercury Install on a dedicated Server has high Cache after some days.

Hi.

Have cloned the mercury(varnish, apache, memcache, apc) install on a dedicated Server with Core i7 Cpu, Raid1 and 8 GB RAM.

All is functional und load test are very good, but here is something that makes me unhappy

Mem: 8053832k total, 7228636k used, 825196k free, 25940k buffers
Swap: 1959920k total, 0k used, 1959920k free, 4222012k cached

The Swap is not used, but there are over 4 GB that are cached.

It seems that the 4GB are kernel caching.
the swapiness is set to 0 via
vm.swappiness=0 in etc/sysctl.conf

Performance limitation of images-as-nodes

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to build galleries with the image-as-node approach, but I'm worried about the performance since I do have around 600,000 images and the number is increasing everyday. Here it says:

"It is theoretically possible that, for sites with lots (say hundreds of thousands) of images, storing them all as individual nodes could result in a performance hit from the extra database overhead." (from http://drupal.org/node/325688).

Mysql mysteriously failing

This has happened twice now. I awake to find my site down (Drupal returns the "can't connect to database" message).

Running /etc/init.d/mysql status returns:

First-class support for ESI in Drupal: Lets Do It!

Over the past few days some of us have been discussing the aims and ambitions of this project:

There are a lot of pieces to be developed to support this properly. My aim is to get something simple in place to allow blocks, regions and panels to be served out of an ESI cache. There are further ideas to build some sort of ESI-assembly into the Boost module, and to implement an intermediary cache layer between Drupal and an external ESI cache (e.g. Varnish) to prevent multiple bootstraps.

So, let's take this discussion out to the wider community!

Preview of Mercury 1.0 install instructions

Mercury 1.0 is almost ready - in fact we hope to have it out before the end of the weekend.

We wanted to give folks a preview of the instructrions to create their own Mercury 1.0 (note: nothing is written in sand until Mercury 1.0 is released - we still have testing to do):

Can 500 simultaneous active user connection be achieved on a decent server?

The short story: I just completed a project for a client. I put it online and 5 min later when the wave of people arrive the server is unreachable. Do I have the wrong server?
