High Performance

This group is dedicated to solutions and approaches for high traffic, high performing Drupal sites. As such, it will deal with a lot of information around the rest of a typical Drupal "stack" -- the operating system, web server, database, and PHP tweaks that combine to support the Drupal application.

This is not a support channel or a place to post bug reports.

I would like to know your thoughts on Drupal and its performance, and especially how to improve it.

We currently use a system based on Drupal 6.22 Project Mercury (Pressflow, Varnish, APC ...) specially designed for heavy traffic. And we have installed more 50 modules like (Views, CCK, Panel, VBO, Rules, Workflow, UberCart, Solr…)

But our production server is a virtual environment with 4 CPUs and 8 GB of Ram, which is really huge for a single site. During our peak traffic, we have over 1,800 visits and more than 50 connected users for one day.

Help figuring out what modules are actually in use.. to reduce memory footprint

Hi, I wanted to know if anyone out their knows of a few ways to track down whats using up the most memory on a site. We have been in development of a beer site for the last year or so part time and getting to the point where things from a site, function and look wise are kicking butt.

But im a bit worried about how much memory the site is using up and need a way to figure out what modules really are just enabled but not used.

Hi All,

Fairly new to drupal and its caches. Been hunting around for the answers to my questions but not found anything exact.

I wanted to ask what the accepted best practice is for configuring memcache (MC) across multiple web servers.

By default the Drupal caches are shared in a single database. MC seems to offer a number of options:

1 - A single remote MC instance that emulates the default database configuration (either with single or multi-bin config).

Safari + Cache-Control with Vary Bug

Hopefully I can save someone else a bit of time.

Safari seems to have a bug related to Cache-Control and Vary headers. It's relevant to Drupal in this case since I was reproducing the behavior with Pressflow 6 with the "external cache" setting, which I'm sure many of you are also using. Also this seems to be a Safari-only bug - Chrome is not impacted.

Cache-Control: public, max-age=3600

Pressflow 7 == Drupal 7 ???

AFAICT Pressflow 7 is almost exactly the same as Drupal 7 except for these two small patches:

Hi all, (first of all, sorry for my english)

I'm start using Drupal and this is my setup:

Gentoo Linux 64bit with:

nginx
Fastcgi PHP-FPM
PHP 5.3
MySQL Server 5.1
xCache Opcode cache
Drupal 7.9 with heavy / large modules ... (views, panels, display suite, entity API ... etc) using the InnoDB engine.

Quad-core Intel CPU
3x2GB (6GB) DDR3 RAM
500GB 7200rpm SATA HD

In this machine, plus the installation of Drupal, there are also a OpenX Ad Server 2.8 (myisam engine & memcached).

I have a client running a relatively new Drupal 6 Ubercart based site with approx 50 items. It presently runs on Rackspace Cloud Sites. UPS shipping is enabled and the Auth.net SIM method is used for credit card checkout. No other external web services are in play that I am aware of.

I have completed a High Traffic Event form with Rackspace. I am awaiting further instructions but they have already suggested all static assets be moved to their cdn. (Akamai)

Is Boost still actively maintained?

I only ask because there is an increasing pileup of issues and requests on the Boost issue queue (http://drupal.org/project/issues/boost?categories=All), but the last updates to the module itself were in April (6.x-1.x-dev and 7.x-1.x-dev). The last stable release was 6.x-1.18, getting to be nearly 2 years ago; there is no stable release for D7.

Looking for (just) one, good, complete example of Varnish3+Drupal7 configuration

I'd posted this @ http://lists.drupal.org/pipermail/support/2011-November/019837.html, and got a msg that that list, too, is the 'wrong place', and that this is a better choice. Feeling a bit like a ping pong ball ... Anyways:

I've been considering putting Varnish3 in front of Drupal7.

I've scoured scads of snippets of inconsistent/incomplete/outdated
information from the HighPerformance group, the FourKitchens wiki, the
Varnish wiki, the Drupal Varnish module threads, countless blogs,
BadCamp presentations, various mailing lists, etc.

Hacking db_query()

A sysadmin I know would like to direct all reads to the slave DB and all writes to the master DB. I did some research on this last night. Of course, in drupal 7, setting up the config settings for master and slave is easy. But, by default, that only means a handful of reads (in node, stats, search and some other modules) are sent to slave first. hook_query_alter seemed like the most obvious solution; alas, that allows you to alter the query -- but not the connection target. And hacking every SELECT in core, custom, and contrib seems, of course, like a nightmare.
