Organizing WI based Drupalists

As we come off of MidCamp and DrupalCon, it seems fitting to try and organize the Wisconsin Drupal community to help plan some events. This is a bit difficult as we have various areas such as Fox Valley, Madison, Milwaukee, La Crosse / Eau Clair, Hodag Country, and more.

For those interested, I would like to invite you to the MidCamp Slack where we can chat and coordinate a bit easier. All you have to do is fill out the invite form at https://midcamp-slack.herokuapp.com/ and join the #wisconsin channel.

Or, comment here! We can still use groups.drupal.org and tools like Meetup.com.

#drupal-wiscosnin in Drupal Slack!

There is a Drupal Slack which seems to have a bigger reach than IRC. I created a #drupal-wisconsin channel. If you're not in Drupal Slack yet you can get an invite via http://drupalslack.herokuapp.com/.

I think it would be a great way to get all the Drupalers in our state in communication to help organize meet-ups, find meet-ups, and even coordinate DrupalCamp WI.

[Drupal414 meetup] Most common Drupal site building pitfalls and how to avoid them!

Start:
2017-03-16 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

myDropWizard offers support and maintenance for Drupal sites that we didn't build initially. We've learned the hard way which site building mistakes have the greatest potential for creating issues later.

Before taking on a new client, we do an in-depth site audit looking for security issues and checking if the site follows best practices or has any problems that would make it harder to maintain the site going forward.

Drupal 8 Release Party - Milwaukee, WI

Start:
2015-11-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Huzzah! The planned release date for Drupal 8.0.0 is November 19th - the same day as our regular November meetup!

Join us to eat, drink and celebrate the future of Drupal! :-)

Of course, the real power of Drupal comes from all the available contributed modules. This means it's now time for developers to start porting their modules to Drupal 8! However, the APIs and conventions for Drupal 8 modules are dramatically different...

Which is why Elliot is going to walk us through the process of converting one of his simple Drupal 7 modules to Drupal 8!

If you're a developer and want to get started with Drupal 8, this is the presentation for you!

(But even for non-developers, this should be an interesting look at the new features and power of Drupal 8. And of course, it'll be a great time to celebrate and learn from other Druplistas!)

Start:
2015-03-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

One of the main strengths in Drupal is the ability to create content types that represent something you want on your site (for example, "event", "article", etc) and put custom fields on them.

Whether its creating a blog, a Views-powered slideshow, or pretty much anything you could imagine... understanding how to create custom content types in Drupal is an essential skill to have!

In this presentation Jason Gordon will be discussing content types and fields in 3 parts:

[Drupal 414 meetup] Headless Drupal 7: RESTful + Backbone

Start:
2015-02-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Headless Drupal has been a hot topic lately, and if you're an advanced-level developer, you already know exactly what this is, and why it's useful.

On the other hand, if you're not part of this club, you're probably asking yourself WHAT IS THIS NEW THING AND WHY DO I WANT TO USE IT?

In this session (by Raphael), we'll start from a basic level, and find out exactly what a RESTful web service is, and why they've become so popular. Then, we’ll explore current solutions in the Drupal ecosystem, before focusing on the main topic, the RESTful module in Drupal 7. We’ll discover how, with only two files, we can create a powerful REST API that we can put to use immediately on any Drupal 7 site.

After a quick break for questions, we'll dive into the second half, where we’ll find out how to consume out new REST API using a variety of client-side technologies, from the lowly cURL to the mighty Backbone.js.

Virtual participation over Google Hangouts

If you want to participate in the meetup but can't make it down physically, no worries - you can participate over Google Hangouts!

We'll be starting the feed at 6:30pm - you can either use Google Hangouts to participate fully, ie. you can ask questions with your voice and interact (Google Hangouts link will be posted in comments on the Meetup.com page at 6pm), or watch passively on YouTube.

Drupal414 meetup: Bring your Drupal problems and 2015 planning!

Start:
2015-01-15 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Unlike most of our monthly meetups, there isn't going to be a presentation this month. Instead, we're going to do an interactive session where we:

  • Discuss the topics and plans for future Drupal414 meetups in 2015
  • Solve specific Drupal problems that other members are having

So, think of some problems you're having on live or testing Drupal sites and bring them to the meetup for us to solve!

The best food at a Meetup!

Drupal414 meetup: Rendering HTML with Drupal - Past, Present and Future

Start:
2014-11-20 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

In this presentation, Steve Persch will review the mental models used in Drupal theming (ie. customizing the way your site looks).

For years Drupal core has encouraged a mindset of altering and overriding its internal understanding of data structures. However, much of the front-end community wants to think of design components independent of their Drupal implementations.

We will discuss tools and workflows that can be used now to reconcile these attitudes including Panels, Display Suite, Sass, static prototypes and style guides. Then we will look ahead to some technologies like Web Components and Drupal 8 to see how these decision points will shift.

And the phrase "Headless Drupal" will come up at least a dozen times. :-)

Virtual participation over Google Hangouts

If you want to participate in the meetup but can't make it down physically, no worries - you can participate over Google Hangouts!

We'll be starting the feed at 6:30pm - you can either use Google Hangouts to participate fully (ie. you can ask questions with your voice and interact!) or watch passively on YouTube.

Drupal414 meetup: Let's explore Drupal 8 together!

Start:
2014-10-16 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

On October 1st, Drupal 8.0.0-beta1 was released! This means it's now go time to start trying it out, porting modules or even building sites (if your project launch date is sufficiently in the future or you like to live dangerously).

We'll talk a little bit about some of the new things in Drupal 8, but mostly we're going to be digging in and trying it out!

Bring your computer and we'll get Drupal 8 installed so you can check out the new -beta1, and we'll explore together, seeing what we can find and how much trouble we can get ourselves into. :-)

(If you don't want to bring your computer down, that's fine too, you can pair with someone else or what the person connected to the projector.)

Since this is going to be an interactive jam session, we're not going to do virtual participation this time. Sorry! Next time we have a more traditional presentation we'll do it again.

Drupal414 meetup: Building a Drupal 8 theme with new fangled awesomeness!

Start:
2014-09-18 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

The Drupal theme system is what controls the visual appearance of your site. This has always been a very powerful system, allowing frontend designers and developers to customize every aspect of the site.

In recent years, however, the tools and techniques used in frontend work have evolved significantly. And, so has the theme system itself in Drupal 8.

In this presentation, Marc Drummond will give an overview of theming in Drupal 8, using new fangled (and awesome!) frontend tools!

Marc is an active Drupal core contributor (maintainer of the core Breakpoint and Responsive Images modules in Drupal 8) and he's literally writing the book on theming in Drupal 8. :-)

Marc is from the Twin Cities and will be presenting virtually via Google Hangouts. This also means that it'll be possible (for the first time) to participate in the Meetup virtually! If you're interested, checkout the event on Google+.

Virtual Panopoly Sprint on September 6th - Help make Panopoly better!

Start:
2014-09-06 10:00 - 16:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
Sprint

Hi Everyone!

We're organizing a Panopoly sprint on Saturday, September 6th, from 10am to 4pm CDT (UTC-0500).

The sprint will be "officially virtual," meaning anyone can participate over the internet from anywhere in the world. (However, we're also going to have a physical location to meetup for people in Milwaukee, WI, USA - more details on that below)

A "sprint" is an event where a group of people get together to work on something for a few hours. Sprints aren't limited to technical people or coders - people of all skill sets can contribute. However, as a virtual sprint, it will be a little easier for more technical people to get involved.

Here is a documentation describing all the ways you can contribute:

http://bit.ly/panopoly-sprint

Our primary goal for this sprint, is to try to reduce the number of issues in the issue queue. At the moment we have 277 open issues, including 111 bugs. I'd really love to get the open issues down to 200 and the bugs to 50. :-)

Anyway, that means we really need help with these things in particular:

  • Confirming bugs, ie. trying to reproduce the problem and see if it's a real bug
  • Testing patches and seeing if they do what the issue says they do
  • Tagging and triaging issues, ie. organizing the issues so they're easier to manage
  • Doing code review on patches to make sure they follow best practices (for coders)
  • Writing patches to fix confirmed bugs (for coders)

But you're not limited to those things! You can also help by writing documentation, creating Behat tests, finding new bugs in Panopoly, etc.

Read more to learn how to participate, what you'll need, and info about the physical sprint room in Milwaukee!

Module Show and Tell

Start:
2014-08-14 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

At the last meetup we decided it'd be great if everyone thought of a module that they discovered that solved a really specific solution. We're not talking about Views, Panels, Display Suite, or any of the big ones. Just anything that solved your problem and might be easily overlooked.
