Drupal414 meetup: Headless Drupal - using modern front-end technologies with Drupal!

Start:
2014-08-21 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Modern web applications are built using new cool JavaScript technologies on the front-end. But how can you use them with Drupal? And why?

In this presentation, Daniel Stout (from Madison, WI) will talk about the hows and whys of "headless Drupal." A recent trend in the Drupal community, headless Drupal is a way to use Drupal as the "data engine" while bypassing much of the theme layer to serve up your site via a JavaScript web application.

In this session, we'll cover:

  • What are the benefits of headless Drupal?
  • What JavaScript frameworks should I consider?
  • What do I need to know to get started?
  • How can headless Drupal make my website better?
  • Is headless Drupal the future of Drupal itself?
  • and much more...

About Daniel Stout: a web developer from Madison, WI, specializing in headless Drupal and freelance WordPress. He is an experienced communicator, conveying technical ideas to non-technical audiences. Daniel is also owner/partner of a tree farm that produces wood for papermaking and lumber. He works at Great Wolf Resorts, the world’s largest chain of indoor water parks.

Start:
2014-07-24 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

We love Drupal! But is it possible to turn your passion for Drupal into a way to make a living? Absolutely!

In this presentation David Snopek will talk about how to get started as a freelance Drupal service provider, based on his experience freelancing full-time for the last 4 years or so.

We'll talk about:

  • The pro's and con's of freelancing
  • Types of work and how to find it
  • Ways to charge and how much you should charge
  • How to escape the hustle and find recurring revenue
  • (only a briefly) Contracts, bookkeeping, accounting and taxes

This presentation will also provide insight to people who may be looking to hire a freelancer: we'll discuss the pro's/con's, talk about how to find someone good and give you insight into how freelancers come up with the rates they charge.

And if you're already an experienced freelancer, own or work at a Drupal shop or otherwise are involved in the Drupal business eco-system, come down and share your experience!

(BTW, we moved this meetup to the 4th Thursday this month, because DrupalCorn Camp - which several of our members are going to - is starting on the 3rd Thursday. Sorry for the late notice!

Drupal414 meetup: Views - the most useful Drupal module ever!

Start:
2014-06-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

When getting started with Drupal, it can be difficult to decide which of the 26,000 modules on Drupal.org you should check out and which to ignore. But if there is one module you should learn how to use (and how to use it well), it's the Views module!

Views is (by far) the most popular Drupal module and is even going to be included in Drupal 8.

Out of the box, Drupal allows you to define complex content types with fields and create many peices of content based on them. Using Views allows you to build dynamic lists of this content, for example: a slider, staff listing, event calendar or photo gallery.

In this presentation Elliot Christenson will give an introduction to Views with a step-by-step walk through for new users, showing how to create some simple Views (like the examples mentioned above), and a quick overview of some more advanced features for veteran Views users.

(We'll also be chatting about our experinces at DrupalCon Austin, which Elliot and David were at in the first week of the month!)

Drupal’s strength lies in its ability to pull together many different contrib modules to solve your problem. But what happens when contrib modules can't do what you need?

Do you cry, swear, or panic? What about when the client wants their site to work "just so", and you have no idea where to start?

Fear not! Armed with nothing more than a debugger, a few simple functions, and lots of nested arrays, you can tweak existing modules to work the way you want, or build entirely new functionality!

Project management for small teams: Agile and JIRA

Start:
2014-02-20 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

If you've ever built a website on a team (big or small), you know there are many more challenges than just the technical! You've got to deal with deadlines, budgets, acurately conveying requirements, keeping track of who's working on what, handling dependencies between different components of the project, tracking bugs, and keeping the stakeholders (ie. clients, bosses) up-to-date on progress, etc...

And if you've never worked on a team - well, learning about some of these things and common pitfalls will get you ready for when you do. :-)

This month, Steve Klebar is going to lead an informal conversation about managing the software development process for small teams. He will talk about his experiences using Agile and JIRA as tools and the benefits of capturing user stories, scenarios and Behavior-driven Development (BDD).

Please bring YOUR war stories as well! Hearing about what went wrong in real life can help demonstrate why these practices are necessary. (And it's super fun to talk about! ;-))

Introduction to Panopoly and Drupal distributions

When you first install Drupal, it's a blank slate - it doesn't really do anything yet. If you want a personal blog, company website, intranet portal or e-commerce store - you need to start installing modules and actually configuring your website into one of those things.

That's where Drupal distributions come in! A Drupal distribution is Drupal plus some modules, themes and configuration, so that when you first install it does something right out of the box.

Drupal414: How to create a responsive, mobile-first theme with Omega!

    2013-12-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
    Organizers:
    Event type:
    User group meeting

So, you've finished building your amazing Drupal site with all the features and functionality you want... BUT it doesn't look the way you want it visually!

To fix this you'll need to build a custom theme. Creating a Drupal theme from scratch can be a lot of work which involves CSS, Javascript, HTML and PHP, which is why most people start with a base theme instead.

Omega is a base theme that allows you to build a custom theme using entirely CSS (and some JavaScript if you want it) - no HTML or PHP required!
