Largest network of news sites using Drupal?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I'm on a reconnaissance mission investigating open source CMS options. Could anyone point me in the direction of the largest multi-site news implementation? I'm interested in the volume of concurrent sites and also the overall metrics (users, pages viewed). We have a home grown solution at the moment but it is in "need of modernisation".

FierceMarkets has 33 or so news sites and millions of page views a month. See, for example, www.fiercebiotech.com

In the Drupalcon SF2010, there was a presentation of a Drupal site with 2.8 millions pageview per day.

Multisite does not degrade your performance. In contrast, it reduces server load (smaller tables).

I've learned ...

I've learned never to say "largest" -- or "first." :-)

I'm guessing you're after massive horizontal scale -- a hundred or so fairly low-traffic newspaper sites with nearly identical configurations? I don't know of any Drupal installations shaped like that. It's not automatically true that a shared filesystem (multisite) makes sense. Do users (including editors) need single-account access to multiple sites?

If you'd like, I'd be happy to chat about our experiences running and maintaining multiple newspaper sites. Drop me an email steve@yelvington.com.

I can't say how big our network is; but you can take a guess by reading the press releases http://datasphere.com/content/news
For KOMO we have 54 "hyperlocal" news sites. It's a large multi-site with domain access on top. These are all TV stations, each with a lot of traffic; so when you do the math that's a lot of page views. If any one is interested we are hiring http://datasphere.com/careers
Found a quote: we're on track to provide neighborhood news to more than 1,200 communities by the end of the year.

They sponsored a lot of D7 development & I would say they have a very large number of logged in users.

Thanks for your post

Hi Mikeytown2, thanks for your post. I'm hoping that Drupal will be given proper consideration on the back of the responses that I had.

We have been running around 172 newspaper sites on Drupal 6 for over a year. It is a multisite environment with SSL wildcard support(had to hack core a little). We do have some access between certain domains, but overall the sites are separate. Memcache is a pain with multisite as we have found you have to run a server for each site because of cache flushing. We do run many custom modules to organize the news and run backend operations.

http://www.our-hometown.com is our main site and http://www.thederrick.com is one of our daily papers.
