Zen for Drupal 6.x Status

I'm a newb trying to find out what the status of the zen base template is for drupal 6.x. Also, are there any little tasks I can do to help get zen for 6.x ready? I'm not a drupal pro but am a developer and I may be able to help out a little on weekends.

Zen is getting very close to a 6.x-1.0-beta1 release.

Zen 6.x-1.0 will mostly be a straight port of Zen 5.x-1.0. But the main reason there hasn't been an official 6.x release yet is because I haven’t built out a site in Drupal 6. What with Views 2, CCK, Date, and Calendar all being without D6 releases.

Anyway, Palantir, my employer, gave me some (paid!) time last week to start hacking on it. And I also decided to build out a test site in D6 with Views 2-alpha and CCK 6-dev, so now I'm finally pounding on Zen’s code. I made a lot of progress over the weekend.

If you have developer skills, please head over to the issue queue: http://drupal.org/project/issues/zen. I'm accepting fixes to both the 5.x and 6.x branch. If you submit a good patch, you’ll get your name in the CHANGELOG and release notes!

Just make sure to use the latest -dev release or checkout from CVS: DRUPAL-5 for 5.x and HEAD for 6.x.

John,

I was wondering if we could get an update on where you are with Drupal 6.x ? If this isn't the best place to be asking for updates, could you point me to that place?

I'm a new Drupal user, and decided to start with Drupal 6. I've been waiting the arrival of views (now in beta 2), cck (now in alpha), and zen. I have heard good things about the ideals behind the Zen theme, and wanted to wait to learn theming till it is available, so I'm extremely interested in its release.

Thanks for your hard work and concern for a semantically correct starting point for us designers!

An update!

Because Zen is designed to be a base theme, it really pushes into the corners of the new D6 theme system. And, unfortunately, we've hit some bugs and a design limitation in the core theme system. Fortunately, Crell is helping me work around those issues and the community is working on fixing those bugs.

I really, REALLY want to release a beta this weekend. But it hinges on fixing these 2 issues:

#249523: Call parent theme preprocess functions
#249532: Allow subthemes to have preprocess hooks without tpl files
