Drupal Groups Churches Home

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Welcome

Welcome to the Drupal churches group. This is a group centered around building Church websites with Drupal and a point for members of The Church to go out into the Drupal community. In this group we discuss how to use Drupal, modules to use, integrating other services with Drupal, and the ins and outs of building Church websites.

The Drupal church community extends beyond this group. You can find more information and help in the IRC channel #drupal-churches on irc.freenode.org and on the Geeks and God podcast website.

Any churches using Forums?

We're wanting to launch forums in our church site, to promote more community interaction, but some of our staff is concerned about bad language, improper postings, etc. I'm wondering how many churches are using forums, how successful they are and how you prevent malicious behaviour?

We're using D6 and I've installed the abuse module, which allows specific content types to be flagged. Is there any type of bad language filter that would prevent something bad from being posted in the first place?

New site: Every Road Covenant Church

Just put together a new church website. It is a bare bone at this point. We are planting a new covenant church (affiliated with Evangelical Covenant Church) and hoping the site will help reach out to our local community.

Appreciate any feedback and comment.

New Site Launch

http://cgcchurch.com

Yeah it's pretty much just a simple quick install. Not much in the way of custom functionality, but it was a big help to this church to be able to give them some quality functionality with out much cost to them. The theme is just Ad Novus customized a bit. I did use Tiny TinyMCE and IMCE along with pathauto, but Clean Urls won't even work since it's on Godaddy hosting.

Calendar Management

What have you come up with for repeating dates and calendar management as a whole?
We used CCK+DateField+Calendar for a long time, but eventually changed to simply embed a Google Calendar on our site instead.

http://www.gracecommunity.ws/event

The biggest hurdle I think is the general interface for working with the calendar.

GCal: click on the date/time you want to add something and start typing,

Drupal:
- remember where the Add Event link is
- figure out what fields to fill in
- remember to select the date and time (with the correct time zone)

Building a Church Website

Our church is going to re-do their web site and I sold them on doing it with Drupal, so I am now charged with the task of making it happen :)

I thought I'd create a discussion on g.d.o. that would document my process in a way that might help others as I go along.

Modules to Improve SEO for Churches

I wast just noticing the hCard module, http://drupal.org/project/hcard, and was wondering what the rest of you use for your church sites to cater to search engine interests. hCard seems like it may be a step in the right direction. I know PathAuto can be helpful in this. What other tips might you share?

Need help in organizing content

Hi,

I have a question related to the usage of Drupal to create content. I am basically running 10-15 blogs on various topics and I would like to use a single CMS system to manage them. So I chose Drupal. Now I want to know, whether it makes sense to create different content types for each blog-topic, or just publish everything as stories with appropriate taxonomies? My requirements are as below.

1) I want to have different themes for each blog-topic.
2) I want to have separate blocks for each topic, in the frontpage, which will display the latest 5 posts in that topic.

Southeast Michigan Theming Seminar

Start:

Organizers:
Event type:
Training (free or commercial)

Bob Christenson (aka Rob Feature) from Mustardseed Media, Inc. will be teaching this seminar on "real world" Drupal theming. He will be talking more about the practical "how to theme" and will NOT be doing in depth detail on how the Drupal theme system works (although we'll cover the basics of course).

This event will cover the same material being presented at the NYC Theming Session on January 24.

Importing Video/podcast's

I'm trying to help my church setup a website with both their video and podcasts. The issue I am having is they already publish their videocasts and podcasts to itunes. I have implemented emfield to at least manually post the videos, but is there a way that I could pull from the RSS feed of the feeds so this doesn't have to be manually done everytime a video is added?

www.osjournal.net is where I am currently testing this out. The RSS feed at the bottom appears to work sometimes, other times it doesn't.

Any help is appreciated!!

Seth

New Look Geeks and God.com

The new look Geeks and God website is here.

When we first announced that Dec. 1st we would launch a new look Geeks and God site with new features, a new layout, and a new look and feel I didn't think we would make the deadline. But, we did and it's now live.

New Features

The 2 main new features are reviews and tutorials. The site had grown from a podcast into a community of people. To reflect that change we added ways to help the community do what it does but sharing experiences and information.

Need suggestions for Ministry web site

Hello,

My wife and I are marriage coordinators in our local church, and provide marriage education and marriage coaching to couples in our community.

After our site using Joomla was hacked and Drupal was recommended to us for security reasons. We are now evaluating Drupal, as well as stepping back and taking a hard look at what we want our web site to accomplish.

The functions we would like for our site are:
A place where couples that are hurting, or are looking to improve their marriage can come for help, and yet be a community where people continue to come back to.

Calendar/Events of ChMS vs. Calendar/Events of Drupal

With more and more web-based ChMS products touting their calendar/events functions, how do you think they compare with building a calendar/events function with Drupal using CCK and related modules?

I'm investigating web-based ChMS products now and wondering how much weight I should put on their calendar/event functionality since we'll soon have a Drupal-based church website.

New Site Launch

Just wanted to throw up a new site I launched last week. It is a site for Pastor Steve Noble & his radio show "Called 2 Action This Week - Cough Medicine For The Church"

It is the first site our company(but not me) has built with Drupal. We will be using Drupal as our development platform from here on out and I will probably be porting a lot of our existing sites ( a lot of them churches) over to Drupal in the near future.

Giving Back to Drupal: Reviewing Patches

Drupal, as a project, is always moving, changing, and improving from version to version. This happens when hundreds of developers work on these improvements, test them, review the changes, and work towards a well written and designed solution. The detailed reviews take longer for features to land in drupal but they are more well thought out, more well written, and documented in a much more usable fashion.

Update to Church Websites Running Drupal

The Church Websites Running Drupal wiki page has been a long standing list of church websites running drupal. Over the past couple years this list had grown into quite a long list and looked rather unorganized. This past week Stephen (aka kjv1611) cleaned up the list organizing it alphabetically with separators. It's much easier to look at and read.

Ministry Planning Website

Hey guys, I tried this with D5 and was never able to come up with a good solution. Anybody have ideas on how to accomplish this? Here's the bare minimum requirements I'd have:

<

ol>

  • Create an event/service (this part I can figure out, lol)
  • Schedule users for various positions (such as guitar, piano, etc...)
  • Add songs and other things (such as special music, offering, message, etc...) to the event. (This much I can also figure out, but I'm open to suggestions.)

    Dynamic Photo Albums

Of common interest on many church sites is the ability to have a photo album. I've been playing around with views arguments, taxonomy and CCK Filefield to try to come up with something nice. I have something worked out.
