Hi!
Pardon, the combative title...this is a post with serious intent. I'm a themer who up until this point has preferred to start from scratch. (My tpl.php files validate to xthml 1.0 strict standards.) I've used Zen before and find it much easier to start with a blank canvas. I've reviewed the code from some really beautiful high-profile sites and noticed Zen was the parent theme. I recently attended a Drupal camp and Zen was hyped by a developer I really respect. So, now I'm starting to rethink using it.
When/why is it better than rolling your own page templates?
Thanks!

PS: Links to discussions, posts, tutorials, etc. are greatly appreciated.

I use Zen for all my themes,
I use Zen for all my themes, Drupal has a lot of styles by default that you need to untheme and Zen's STARTERKIT gives you a great place to start. Zen's changed alot in the last year so if you used it before then you probally haven't seen all Zen can do. The Drupal 6 version also has some new features I really like the way subthemes work in Drupal 6, you can place theme in the root Themes directory rather than under the Zen folder.
zen subtheme
you have to start from ground up. Many small little CSS thingy would be nice if included in the starterkit. there are limited number zen subtheme
