Hello,

Im Scott, a new user to the drupal community. As one of the few students in my high school that has any clue with HTML and CSS, i have been asked to create a website for my school newspaper to post articles, photos, videos, and have discussions. The advisor asked me to use drupal, so I am gladly obliging...

However, I am brand spankin new to Drupal, and have no clue what to put into this site. I read the list of recommended modules, but there are so many of those i dont know where to start, nor how to use them/combine them.

Im not asking for my site to be made for me, but if somebody could advise what addons would work well for me (i already added Views and CCK), i would greatly appreciate the assistance.

Thanks in advance.

For articles.. the in built page and story will do the job. Also it depends on what you wanna provide in an article.
FCKeditor is must.
For image..
There are many gallary modules available. Use the one which best fits to your need.
Same for videos.
In Drupal, the discussion is in built. So, just study it.

Regards.

Welcome to the Drupal world! I hope you'll find it more fruitful than frustrating. :-)

I would recommend that you find some screencasts or how-to guide to watch. I find especially the screencasts a very quick way to learn Drupal stuff. (You will probably end up rebuilding the website a few times anyway, but the more you learn inbetween, the better it will get.)
I personally like the 45 screencasts to get you kicking ass with Drupal, and eventhough they deal with Drupal 5 most of it is valid for Drupal 6 as well. (And I definately think you should use D6.)

Concerning the newspapers modules list -- don't take it too literally. And most of all, don't install every module on the list or you'll get a completely crammed up site that will be impossible to administrate. But CCK and Views are great.

Concerning beatutifulminds comment on FCKeditor I would actually like to disagree, or at least to present an alternative to look at: BUeditor + MarkDown Editor. It's a solid solution that gives you much neater text underneath the presentation layer.

Best of luck!

Scott, I've just rolled out a solution for our weekly and daily newspapers after about 12 months of development. One of the things our management agreed to was that we would offer it to free for any schools that were interested in it. (hosting free as well). Let me know if this is of interest to you and I'll give you a demo.
