Contributions to the movement

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is an open thread to discuss module contributions that benefit newspapers.

Geoff mentioned that:

Our biggest challenge was creating a module that displayed articles by section (news, music, Movies, etc.) for a given issue. Teething problems mostly now aside, things seem to be just fine.

Please limit comments to descriptions of and links to released Drupal modules that have been GPL'd or are in development.

And Steve noted that:

Is there a real need for NITF and/or NewsML input/output? (In Savannah we are outputting NITF from a DTI system and loading it into Drupal for dynamic page rendering.) Would an NITF content type and parser module be worth developing as a public project?

I know that our NITF work hasn't been released (it's for a fork of 4.6). This is an open thread for posting Drupal modules that have been specifically released to handle newspaper issues.

I'll start, below.

MySite

MySite is a user-customizable homepage system that is designed to compete with MyYahoo! and Google's personalized homepage.

It has been released for Drupal 4.7 and 5.x.

Views and panels

These two from Merlin are huge in this area.

Views (http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/views)

Using Views, an administrator can create pages and blocks that list new posts of a particular type (such as forum or blog posts), create alphabetical lists by taxonomy, create weekly, monthly or yearly archive pages, create a table of posts that are flagged as unread, and much much more!

Panels (http://drupal.org/project/panels)

This module allows you to create pages that are divided into areas of the page -- a completely flexible system that includes a couple of 2 column and 3 column layouts by default, but is also highly extensible and other layouts can be plugged in with a little HTML and CSS knowledge, with just enough PHP knowledge to be able to edit an include file without breaking it.

While there are a great examples all over the place (we should compile a list - maybe a wiki?), this is the latest one that I came across:

Also a lot of talk/interest revolving around how the MySite module can integrate with Views and Panels.

It's great to have both the developers already in this group. Hope we can get some others representing...
