Hi, While at DropLabs in LA a couple of months back, I learned that a group there had just finished a 12 week study group that went cover to cover through the Pro Drupal 7 Development book. I would like to start a group here in San Diego to do that same thing. The general concept is that we would meet once per week for a 2-3 hour session, at each session we would slog through a new chapter. I am a Drupal "Site Builder" who can take Drupal modules and construct and configure a working site, but I want to delve into theming and module development. I would like to start the group with 8-12 dedicated individuals in February. All skill levels welcome. Rich Yumul, owner of Sage Tree Solutions (SageTree.net) has offered a meeting room with high speed Wi-Fi. If interested please contact me. Don't miss out, this will be FUN! Thanks, Doug Hoffman 858-442-3414

DGD7 is better
I am definitely interested, but would recommend using "The definitive guide to Drupal 7"(Apress) instead of "Pro".
The pro book was written before the D7 release, and as you know D7 was a little rough edged even after it was released, so pro tends to be a little sketchy about d7. I've seen both books and find that "DGD7" has a much better documentation of the new d7 systems, as it was published last year instead of in 2010. DGD7 also has a good website and goes thru the development of an actual project that was released on d.o. (Check out the Xray module). DGD7's theming section was written by the head of the D8 HTML5 initiative.
Other suggestions on text book to use for study group?
Thanks for the suggestion. Does anyone else have suggestions on the best book to use?

The Definitive Guide to Drupal 7
I have the Kindle version of The Definitive Guide to Drupal 7. I still haven't finished it but it would be my vote.
Definitive Guide to Drupal 7
Yes to DGD7. I have the paper copy. At 4 pounds 4 ounces and 1040 pages, it's a bargain at $28 from Amazon. Didn't know about the e-book version until this thread; found pdf, mobi and epub in one tar file - search for
Apress.The.Definitive.Guide.to.Drupal.7.Jul.2011.rar
I'm about 300 pages into it, learning much. I need more on theming, php and css than the book provides. It's more like a one-volume encyclopedia - covers everything, a bit less than you'd like.
Doug, I am interested in participating, more so if it's closer to our neighborhood.
Interested in joining group
Count me in. I would love to participate in the group.
Drupal 7 Module Development
For an alternative to Pro Drupal 7 Development, I was told that Drupal 7 Module Development rocks. As for the Definitive Guide to Drupal 7, it's the only book that I've read front to back and must admit it's my personal favorite.
The study group is exactly what I need, so count me in.

Interested in the Possible North County Version
Hi Doug!
Thanks again for all your hard work at SANDcamp! What an amazing experience that was!
If you do get a North County group off the ground, I'd like to be a part of it. I still might try to get down to the one you're building at SageTree. Either way, it's awesome that you're spearheading this! Thank you!

Study group
Hi all, Sorry for the delay here. I got wrapped up in a big project that consumed all of my time for the past couple of weeks. We will launch the study group with 3 weeks. The interested parties right now out number the capcity of the room I have available. There were also some folks interested in a North County version, versus downtown. Is anyone willing to pick up the North County group, and hence allow us to split into two groups of about 10? I will send more details shortly. Thanks for your interest! Doug

I would actually prefer a North County location as well, but I don't mind meeting in the down town area.
If a projector is not required, then we could meet at the Pannikin in Del Mar area. They always have plenty of room.

Larry, I am extremely interested in the new Drupal meeting unfortunately Tuesday at 9 Am would be virtually impossible as it is during working ours and I work in Orange County (live in North County). Since most work with clients occurs during the day, making this would be tough. i'd like to go through a 12 week dgd7 as Doug originally suggested. Will be thinking of it over time. Via de la Valle seems a good centralized meeting point for northerners as well as those in the south?

There's no way I can make a daytime Drupal Study group. It would have to be in the evening. Via Le la Valle would be perfect. There's a Pannikin there with big tables and wifi.

Drupal N2N Class Outline
Hello all N2Ners,
Doug Hoffman has been real busy of late, so here is a proposal for getting our N2N classes underway.
Class focus
Although Doug titled his class Newbie to Ninja, (he's good at marketing as well as drupal!) we feel the best approach is to actually focus on more of a site-builder to proto-developer track. That being said, everyone is welcome, come learn and contribute, but we won't be starting at ground zero. It will be best if you've built several sites and are good at getting around drupal and development tools. For example; we'll be working a lot with drush and git. You don't have to be an expert by any means, we will all be working together to learn and share tricks of the trade, but you should be comfortable with the command line and the basic system syntax of these systems.
Books
There are 3 main books out there, Pro7: Pro Drupal Development 7 (apress), DGD7: Definitive Guide To Drupal 7 (apress), and D7MD: Drupal 7 Module Development (packt). Each has it's strengths.
Pro7is a classic, and has a lot of detailed info on fundamental drupal systems like the menu router and FAPI, as well as a good module development track.
D7MD has a great step by step module development progression for D7, probably the best of the lot, and it is more up to date than Pro in handling the changes that came with D7.
DGD7 is the most recent and up to date, but was written by a rather large committe and so is a little less cohesive. What it does offer though is a lot of insights into the "real world" scenarios you encounter when working with Drupal, like "glue code" module building.
We've got access to all the books, so the current plan is to go with DGD7 as the main text, and then borrow info here and there from the others to fill in some gaps.
Note
There are no teachers in this class! We'll have a topic list to focus on each week, but it's up to all of us to contribute and make the class productive.
Class WebSite
The plan is to build out a drupalN2N site for all of us to use to share code, info and resources. We'll spin up a Pantheon platform for the class to use, which will give us dev and test sites to work with and we can code away from there.
Class Learning Schedule
We'll take the agile approach!
About 12 weeks of meetings for the first round, with 6 two-week sessions.
Sprint and then evaluate our progress.
We'll use the first meeting to take a look at a topic/chapter list, gather our "user stories" and decide on where we want the class to go over the next sessions.
Plus go over some basics like:
development environments & IDEs
git, drush,
hosting mechanics,
resources & management
Mechanics:
We'll need to set up who is attending, north vs south, and the final locations and times.
Looks like North is moving towards Tuesdays 7-9 at the Via de la Valle Pannikin.
South will be at Sage Tree, most likely the same time frame, on a day of the week to be decided.
I will spin up the N2N site soon and you can sign up and select North/South and vote on Time/Day, etc.
Comments welcome,
Thanks to Doug Hoffman for lighting the fire.

The "Tuesday 7-9 at at the Via de la Valle Pannikin"... works for me.
When do we start?
Great Drupal N2N Class Outline
Thanks for getting the outline done. For Sage Tree Solutions, does anyone know if parking is ok in the area around 7pm (which is the perfect starting time for me)? And I'm hoping people will lean towards the middle of the week, like on a Wednesday. I can't wait for it to begin! :D

I'd also be interested in joining the group. I live in the Murrieta area. Every Drupal Users Group is an hour away in every direction, so any movement of the "North" meetup toward the East (Highway 15 corridor?) would be greatly appreciated. Gas is now at $4.35 up here. I have the Drupal 7 Module Development book. I got to about page 77 before it became too difficult. Looking forward to possibly understanding it all the way through!

Hey James, I'm in Temecula. Long time lurker of the group but I'm going to try to start making meeting, beginning tonight. If you're going tonight and want to carpool, contact me through my profile here.
As far as NTN, not sure if partial participation is welcome for non newbies, but Del Mar would be too far for me too. It looks like a pretty fun effort, but I didn't speak up earlier despite the interest because I doubt I'd be able to make it every week no matter where it was.

North County DUG
I would be interested in carpooling to the NCDUG, but probably not tonight, as they do not have a topic yet. To drive (or be driven) for an hour, I need a topic. :) Maybe the local Murrieta/Temecula Drupal fans can meet up locally first to get to know each other a bit? Someplace with WiFi preferably. Maybe we can start a new topic for this opportunity. Tweet at @MyDrupalJourney

Study group uodate...
Hello Drupalers,
Larry Jones has taken the lead on a north county Drupal study group and is launching it tonight at 7pm the Pannikin Del Mar just off the I5 at Via Del la Valle exit in the small shopping mall with Miltons. If you are interested in a north county group, check out the details at:
http://www.meetup.com/Solana-Beach-Drupal-Meetup/events/53719252.
I am finally up for air and plan to launch the downtown group next Thursday, meeting from 7-9pm at the Sage Tree office in the Gaslamp at 752 5th Avenue (just 2 blocks from 3 hours of free parking at Horton Plaza - be sure to validate when you park as validation ends at 9pm). We will meet every Thursday for about 12 weeks. The Sage meeting room is only able to accomodate 8-12 for the study group (and there are a number of Sage folks who get first dibs), so please let me know if you are still interested in a downtown group on Thursday evenings from 7-9pm each week. There may be a nominal fee for the group to weed out who is really interested and to provide some snacks/drinks each session (more details to follow). We will probably use both the Pro Drupal 7 Development and the Definitive Guide to Drupal 7 as the basis for our group (so be ready to get both books if you don't have them already). Doug Rowe and I will be meeting tomorrow to develop a rough syllabys for the group which we will share later this week.
Get ready to Drupal! Doug

From Newby to Ninja seems to have been shaved...
it sounded as if the Newby section of what was going to make this a good progression for all levels to engage and help learn as we progressed through the World of Drupal has been changed and this is now another room meant to build understanding of the difference from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7? I am interested but will want to see how it fits within my scope of understandings and use. I liked the idea of creating a platform for others to be able to come learn Drupal in response to other CMS platforms out there. This part has been cut, right?

Hi Pat, The group at this point is going to assume at least a basic level of Drupal site building knowledge. We will cover site building, but will assume some knowledge of it. It will not be the diff between D6 and D7, but instead focus on D7 site building, theming, module development and development practices (Drush/GIT). Hope that helps. Doug

First downtown meeting! Thu Mar 8th 7pm @ Sage Tree - 752 5th Av
Hello all,
Ready or not (and I am not sure I am ready!), we are going to kick off the downtown study group this week on Thursday March 8th at 7pm at the Sage Tree offices at 752 5th Avenue. Your best bet for parking is at Horton Plaza (2 blocks away from the east parking entrance) where you get 3 hours free. Give yourself enough time to go into the plaza before coming to Sage, as the validation machines stop at 9pm, but if you get your ticket validated at say 6:45pm, then it's good to get out for free up until 9:45pm. If you mess up, it's $2/15mins, so don't mess up.
The Sage meeting room is not too big, so please RSVP ASAP to me via email to doug@customersucessmarketing.com (please include your first/last name, cell phone # and email address) so I will know if we will be sitting on the floor or have enough chairs for everyone.
This first meeting will be mainly to meet each other, do an Agile-like voting mechanism on the agenda for each of the following 8-10 weeks. I would like to have everyone commit to being the lead moderator for one week of the study group.
Please plan on having access to Pro Drupal 7 Development and The Definitive Guide to Drupal 7 for the duration of the course as we plan to use both books for reference.
See you Thursday, Doug

Horton Plaza Ticket Validation
To clarify ticket validation at Horton Plaza, I believe the clock starts ticking the minute you pull the ticket to get into the parking garage. For those that have never parked there, you can get it validated at any of the machines located throughout the mall on your way to Sage Tree Solutions: http://westfield.com/hortonplaza/assets/pdfs/hortonFAQ0911.pdf

Parking Validation
The parking garage is attached to the outdoor mall. Once you walk into the mall, there are stands (pretty clearly marked imo) where you simply insert your ticket to have it validated. It shouldn't be too hard to spot - there's usually a short line of people waiting to validate their ticket.

Site Building, Episode I - A New Hope ... Drupal 7!
Hi All,
Apparently I'm at bat next week with Site Building (1 of 2). Jay will be presenting the second half of Site Building the following week. As I've mentioned, I've only been working with Drupal two months now so I'm approaching my presentation as more of a moderator (which actually I trained for years ago with a group called National Issues Forums) than an instructor. Doug informed me that I had to read the chapters I was going to present so I'd like to keep the reading doable. I'd like to "cover" the following chapters in DGD7:
Chapter 1: Building a Drupal Site,
Chapter 3: Building Dynamic Pages Using Views,
Chapter 4: There's a Module for That,
Chapter 5: Creating Community Web Sites with Organic Groups.
I think I'd like to do three things next week. First, because I have a background in documentary production and it'll kill time I'd otherwise have to be talking, I'll try to find a relevant 10-minute video to start things off with.
Second, I'd like to build a very simple site using the Acquia-Drupal DAMP stack, touching on some of the basic material in the four chapters I mentioned above.
Finally, if folks don't mind, I'd like to be a bit self-serving and present one of the UCSD sites I'm going to be taking over soon. (The word "panicked" has recently become prominent in my vocabulary.) I'll show how I used views and panels to add a small section to the site, which was built by someone else. I'd also like to just look under the hood of the site with the group and critique how the site was built.
I'd welcome any comments on the proposed agenda. (I'll post this on the pantheon site as well.)
Thanks, Milan
Site building
Hey Milan,
I can present a overview of modules grouped by general functions, and highlighting some of the key players in each group.
I also posted the readings to the Pantheon site, under the class schedule listings.
-Doug Rowe
PS: thanks to Zakiya for the great git drush overview.
Site Building
Hi Doug. Your module overview for next week sounds great. Thanks for the offer. Maybe we can do that before looking at the UCSD site, which has a TON of modules in it. - Milan

There is a free intro video re. site building at drupalize.me:

I have access to the rest of the series, so Milan, let me know which one might be of interest.

The third installment of our study group meeting tonight at 7pm!
Hi everyone.
We're on again tonight for the third installment of our study group. Just wanted to send a quick reminder. Milan will be covering Site Building tonight, and his suggested reading is:
Chapter 1: Building a Drupal Site,
Chapter 3: Building Dynamic Pages Using Views,
Chapter 4: There's a Module for That,
Chapter 5: Creating Community Web Sites with Organic Groups.
See you tonight, 7pm at Sage Tree (www.SageTree.net) @ 752 Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp district downtown. Doug

Site Building, Episode I, Agenda
Given that just about everyone in the group knows more about Drupal than I do, I thought I'd just touch on a few site building topics to maybe get a conversation going. Here's a sketch of what I have in mind for this evening:
I think you're overwhelmed by
I think you're overwhelmed by Zakiya's presentation on a complex (but necessary) topic last week. Don't worry, you'll do just fine. We're all here to learn, including yourself. ;-)

Site Building, Episode II: Agenda
I'll be presenting next week on Site Building (2 of 2). Suggested reading:
Chapter 8: Extending Your Site
Chapter 9: Drupal Community: Getting Help and Getting Involved
Chapter 10: Planning and Managing a Drupal Project
Chapter 32: User Experience
Since we went over a lot of the most useful modules last night (my favorite parts were the video about the visually stunning Swtor.com & Doug Rowe's module list), I'll take a different approach & talk about all the problems that I went through to get a working prototype ready for my tiny music startup, Discography.by, and how I conquered them.
I'll show some screenshots of the wireframes that I created to help with the visualization process, talk about mastering the art of finding the perfect module, go over some confusing parts about the different places I had to dig around to configure some modules & dive deep into all the main modules without which the project would've never been completed.

This week - theming one
Site setup:
This week we will be doing some class exercises. Play along by setting up your own local dev environment. Follow the directions at http://dev.dn2n.gotpantheon.com/
(New class members should create an account to log in and see the class info)
Build your own d7 site and then apply the two files to update the db and sites/all folder.
Note: Thursday is opening day for the Padres. Game is at 4pm so traffic may be a bit heavy depending on if they are loosing and folks are headed to the bars already! (sorry pad fans)
See you there!

Theme Sesssion Notes
Notes and links from last nite's session have been posted at:
http://dev.dn2n.gotpantheon.com/content/theming-notes
Note that Jay's comment from above highlites an important caveat when using wamp dev environments: The TMP file is located in a different place! Navigate to the admin/config/media/file-system page to point your drupal instance to the right temp file location. Thanks to Lee for helping Jay get up and running!
This week: Form theming and Drupal jQuery
Hello all,
This is week two of theming, with a little jQ mixed in!
Check out the schedule at:
http://dev.dn2n.gotpantheon.com/
And download the zip file to update last week's site for this weeks adventure exercises.
Pad home game at 7pm, may be some traffic.
See you there.
Simplest Possible Custom Module
When I did my presentation on site building, I briefly mentioned a simple custom module that I built using only two lines based on the following:
http://drupal.org/project/remove_history
The code for the port to Drupal 7 is (ok, technically it's four lines):
function remove_history_user_view_alter(&$build) {
$build['summary']['#title'] = NULL;
$build['summary']['member_for'] = NULL;
}
The full zip file can be downloaded at:
http://jayl.ee/remove_history-7.x-1.0.zip
And for newbies interested in how I figured it out, I wrote a blog post with screenshots (before & after):
http://jayl.ee/blog/2012/04/16/how-i-built-the-simplest-possible-custom-...
I hear the study group up North has more newbies than South, so I hope this helps.

Excuse the interuption...
Hi,
We are working on getting a new virtual study group going and I wanted to ask some questions about this group.
Ours will be a hybrid method of an online study group, Drupalistas Study Group, we had going at the beginning of the year and the Pro Drupal 7 study group that was held at Droplabs. We are giving the all-virtual method another go.
Ours will not be a training, per se, but a co-learning style of group. I'm curious as to how your meetings are going and if you are doing any projects in conjunction with your meetups.
Thanks for letting me 'butt in'...
K
