Evenings, UK time, not wednesdays

admin@themertonrule.org-gdo's picture

I'd love to get involved in this.

Evenings (UK time) are best for me, although I seem to quite often be busy on Wednesday evening so that wouldn't be ideal.

Saying that anytime before midnight UK would be fine by me (including during work hours since I volunteer for myself).

Thanks for starting this group!

Josef.

Can we make it shorter, say

dami's picture

Can we make it shorter, say 1-hour? Or move the free discussion/Q&A session to end of lesson, so if anyone need to leave early, they can at least have covered most of the class?

I forgot to address this issue . . .

oadaeh's picture

My opinion, not having actually attended, is that 1 hr. will be too short. I can understand that 2 hrs. might be too much to absorb at one time, so I think a compromise of 1.5 hrs. is a good target.

90 mins seems good

joshk's picture

With better organization this will improve. My guess is that more than 90 minutes will leave me tired, as I started to lose my momentum in the last half-hour. I'm going to shoot for a tighter lesson-plan for #2, and a little more preparation.

6 AM, PST . . .

oadaeh's picture

I voted for "Move earlier in day", but what I mean by earlier is 6 AM PST, which I'm not actually expecting to happen. I suspect that if it can't be done in the morning, the day & time it was done is about as good as it gets for me.

As long as the materials are available for later review, it might be okay if I can't make a meeting.

I found it a very convenient

Squidgy's picture

I found it a very convenient time of day, because I tend to work late and get home just in time for that - so I would be filled with weeping if it moved to an earlier time. The weekends might be easier as well, but that's up to the presenter's convenience.

Earlier, please!

wim leers's picture

For me (and at least two others, probably many more), this lesson was between 2 AM and 4 AM local time... Which is not something I can do every time. If you wanna keep it at this hour, then please move it to the weekend!

Move to weekend *and* earlier in day

morphir's picture

Weekends is most convenient for most people. That way none of us have to stay up late night. Please.

Suggestion:

Sat 1/13/2007 9:00 AM (west coast) Sat 1/13/2007 12:00 PM (east coast) Sat 1/13/2007 6:00 PM (EU..GMT+1)

Plan meetings here

Yeah

joshk's picture

I'm leaning towards Sunday morning for my own personal reasons (which trump everyone! Ha!)

How about:

PST: Sun 1/14/2007 11:00 AM
EST: Sun 1/14/2007 2:00 PM
Buenos Ares: Sun 1/14/2007 4:00 PM
Belgum/Hungary: Sun 1/14/2007 8:00 PM

Sunday 11am PST, sounds

shaal's picture

Sunday 11am PST, sounds great!
(josh, are your going to create a new vote, with specific day/times?)

it also seems a 'comfortable' time worldwide.

.

Sounds Perfect

OpenChimp's picture

This sounds like a good time. Any earlier on a Sunday just wouldn't be right for us west coasters who like to make use of our Saturday nights.

I'll be hoping that this is the choice.

More Local times

ruharen's picture

In Spain this lesson will be at 09:00 PM on Sunday 1/14/2007 which is also the time for other Central European Countries that use CET/CEST timezones.

More info on local times could be achieved in this site: http://www.timeanddate.com/library/abbreviations/timezones/

Worldly Consideration

webavant's picture

Since there seems to be a global interest in Drupal, check this chart that displays a comparison of timezones in US (west & east coast), Norway and Australia.

http://www.worldtimeserver.com/meeting-planner-times.aspx?&L0=US-CA&L1=U...

It seems like 3pm EST on the weekend is ideal for a meeting since it would accommodate most of the primarily English speaking countries. Unfortunately, the meeting time that the poll is in favor of, 8pm EST, is 3 am in Europe.

Yes

joshk's picture

My emerging "logic" is that for maximum sustainability, having me do these sundays at noon (I normally live in California) is the best all around. I think what we should do here is have a session this thurs, and then AGAIN on the sunday after (one week from now). After that we can switch to sundays and anyone who loves the old time can start a second weekly lesson!

Fo shizzle...

eljustino's picture

Sounds great here.... 5pm PST on any weekday just can't work for a lot of us left coasters, 'specially those of us with day jobs. Taking an hour or two out of a weekend (especially around my daughter's nap time) is perfect.

distribution

greggles's picture

If we consider the time zones of visitors to groups.drupal.org - it's pretty focused on US/Europe with some spread in Asia/Pac (see data on Drupal penetration by country which includes an OpenDocument Spreadsheet download with the raw data).

8/10 countries by total visits are in Americas/European time zones.

My vote is that we move it earlier in the day so we can include more of those people, though I don't care if it's the weekend or the "work" week.

Another thought...

eljustino's picture

So I'm a few minutes away from finishing the video and I realized this morning that I'm actually better off not catching the live show. I've gotten quite a bit out of it and learned loads, but I don't think that would have happened if I didn't have the option to pause, rewind, experiment, etc. If I were watching things live, I think a lot of it would have just blown right past me.

Am I in the minority on that one? If so, I'll just carry on doing it this way from here on out (catching the show on reruns and asking any questions in the groups later). Wasn't so bad at all.

If not, though, maybe we could think about tweaking the format a little bit? Maybe Josh (or whoever) could actually record themselves solo and post the file, giving us a few days to look it over, play around, and figure out our questions. Then we could set up a live Q&A a few days later in which we could discuss the ins and outs, go into specific details, etc. And people who couldn't make the live Q&A could post their questions ahead of time so they could be covered during their absence.

Agreed

Charles Oertel's picture

Apart from being sound asleep at 2am, the recorded format suits my style of learning a lot better. I acknowledge that realtime feedback and questions are needed during the session to 'keep it real' and ensure that it is understandable by the intended audience. However, I believe that the recordings will ultimately become a valuable resource to anybody wanting to grok Drupal.

I can even see an eventual re-recording of the lessons to make them more concise, strip out some of the chatter on IRC, avoid dead patches and mistakes, and provide some kind of workbook/textbook with exercises etc that matches the lesson.

That said, Josh is doing a superb job and the recording has been very helpful to me. Thanks.

Cool!

joshk's picture

I'm really glad that the recording and documentation are working well together. I think this is something we can get a lot of people to do, and which will really help make a lasting impact in the community.
