Introduction, Hello from Kazakhstan, 5.X or 4.7?

I've been a lurker on this list for some time now, but since I just posted my first comment I figure I ought to introduce myself. I'm an American teaching in the journalism department at KIMEP, an english-language university in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

I have been looking for a CMS to use in order to set up a community website to include our student newspaper, community section, discussion, etc and perhaps another for our department. I am a newbie, having worked with MovableType, WordPress, and such, but never a full-blown CMS. After a few months of research, I've committed now to trying out Drupal for the site and am just about to install on our nascent site.

One quick question for the list: I'm planning to run 5.X, on the assumption that the most important modules will be updated relatively soon, and that 4.X will become outdated at about the same pace. For those with more Drupal experience, would you say this is a reasonable assumption?
