CKeditor and insertion of photgraphs

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'm well aware that I can insert images within the editor panel, but I'd like more. I would like the ability to provide the user with a single 'insert' interface button that can insert a photo within its own frame and including its cutline.
I have a content type called photograph that includes its own set of supporting fields, that are distinct from articles, and I intend on allowing the selection of photographs to query against this content type when the writer creates an article.

Any advice from anyone who has seen this before?

Approaches

Several primary ways of approaching this:

  1. Image Assist supports both major rich text editors. We've been using it for years. I'm not fond of the UI, and it entangles data in a way I don't like, but it works.

  2. CCK, imagefield, imagecache, and place the image precisely through node-TYPE.tpl.php. This is how we're doing it.

  3. Same as #2, but create nodes for the images. Requires some ninja skills. Not for the faint of heart.
