Coordinated Universal Time

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The drupaldojo.com site currently uses PST time for reporting the start time of lessons. While a handy link is provided to the World Clock site its still a chore to always have to use an external site to convert the time. It especially produces ambiguity because some places decide to have a separate summer and winter time (and every country seems to convert on different dates).

In the interest of promoting standards, can we please use UTC (Coordinated Universal Time; aka Zulu time) instead (or at least as well as)?

A quotation from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utc):

UTC is the time system used for many Internet and World Wide Web standards. In particular, The Network Time Protocol, which is designed to synchronize the clocks of many computers over the Internet (usually to that of a known accurate atomic clock), uses UTC.

UTC is used for meetings on the Internet (e.g. IRC chats, shows, and so on).

International broadcasts, whether they are over the internet, free-to-air satellite television, or shortwave radio, always give schedules and announce times in UTC.

[...]

UTC is also the time system used in aviation, referred to in Zulu. Weather reports, flight plans, air traffic control clearances, and maps all use UTC to avoid confusion about time zones and daylight saving time.

Thank you

Funny you should bring this up!

It turns out that we as a group have gotten fed up with time zone conversions, and it seemed to happen all at the same time too! Last Sunday, Aboyousif and FLK wrote a snippet for drupaldojo.com that will convert GMT to the server's local time via an offset, and then allow us to show the Countdown Timer's nifty javascript in a way that accurately relates to global time.

I can't wait to get this working!

Drupaldojo.com is now on Zulu time!

We've made the jump, folks! http://drupaldojo.com is now using UTC/Zulu time for the lessons from here on out. Universal Coordinated Time is a worldwide standard, and unlike GMT, it's the same for all countries and provinces regardless of local laws. Yay to all who helped with this feat of worldwide dominance!
