Creating a site map?

Any suggestions on how to create a site map? I tried the Site Map module and didn't like it; it doesn't offer as much functionality as I'd like. It's fine for creating taxonomy lists -- but left out are all the pages and sections that aren't tied to taxonomy terms. Not to mention, I"d like to be able to rename some of the category headings (what our back-end interface calls them and what I want an end user to see might be two different things).

I'm thinking that the kind of site map I'd like to create could possibly be done with Views — perhaps several Views blocks assigned to one page. But I haven't quite figured out all the details yet.

Just curious to know if there are options I'm overlooking here.

What's the intended use for the site map?

Are you looking to build a site map for general use, or standards compliance, or another reason? Depending on who you want using it, and how you expect them to use it, there may be a few ways to move forward.

Site map use: "Where do I find ...?"

I want a site map that users can go to when they're wondering, "Where do I find ...?"

i know for myself that sometimes I can't figure out where I should go to find what I need just by looking at the menus. But if I can skim through all the sections available on the site by looking at a site map, I can usually find what I'm looking for.

Of course, our site is still in development, and I'm still trying to get a good handle on what should be on the site map. But I do know that the functionality of the Site Map module was not what I was looking for ... so I thought I'd ask what other options there might be.

Gotcha. In that case, my first though would be using menus somehow. There's a module that allows you to automatically insert nodes into a menu on creation (Automatic Menu). You could then stylize or display the menu somehow, but AFAIK it won't have any sort of hierarchy (just a single level).

There's a few other modules to do site maps but they too are taxo based. There's XML Sitemap, but it just builds an XML file for submission to search engines (this is a good idea in general as it more explicitly shows Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. where your stories are and potentially improves your rank). XML Sitemap caches the file and updates it on cron runs, so you could generate it, then import it and make a page from the XML file. You may want to use XMLRPC with Services or the XML Parser module or something like that.

Unfortunately, unless the content type possesses a hierarchy structure like taxonomies or books (some sort of menu structure) Drupal doesn't really know that it's not all on a single level. I looked for a bit for a way to build arguments in Views to parse the path field but was unable to discover a method. I certa
