Drupal.org wishlist

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
Dries's picture

I asked more than 1,000 existing Drupal users (not Drupal prospects) what they would like to see improved on drupal.org. A prioritized wish list is provided below:

More ideas and suggestions might be available in the comments of http://buytaert.net/drupal-org-wishlist.

Project rating/reviewing...

webchick's picture

In Barcelona, a group of us huddled off in one of the BoF areas in an attempt to redesign the project node layout. Alan Pritt made some further refinements to our work, and the current almost-but-not-quite-complete version looks like: http://groups.drupal.org/files/project-module-ui-2.png. I think with another round of minor refinements and this would be good enough to start implementing. This includes project rating and reviewing, along with several UI improvements to make the page more user-friendly.

The project usage statistics which provides information on what the most frequently used modules are currently held up by http://drupal.org/node/165380. Derek is looking for feedback on that issue.

Module rating

theborg's picture

Very good approach!

I'd also include:
- Depends on: (linux style dependencies).
- Related modules (as in views -> panels).
- Good to do: (frontpage, lists of nodes, etc ->this are tags).
- Deprecated by: (umm... version 2).

We are heading to a better Drupal understanding.

btw: I offer my help in any way I can.

How you can help

Amazon's picture

Theborg, you can help by summarizing the existing efforts for module rating and working these efforts to be included in the Drupal.org re-design plan. It's a wiki, so just jump in and include what's possible as part of the plan.

Mockup 3

Another 'round of minor refinements' has now been carried out. You can see mock-up #3 at http://groups.drupal.org/node/6186#comment-19163.

On better documentation...

webchick's picture

<soapbox>
One thing that of course would help is for all the people who say the documentation is sub-par to actually chip in and start writing/fixing it ;) Just a quick reminder that anyone at all can post a request to join the docs team and myself or one of the admins will add you, post-haste. This gives you edit rights over the handbook so that you can fix typos, incorporate comments, and so on. Don't let your perceived lack of knowledge/experience with Drupal be a barrier to you; I still maintain that the very best time to help with documentation is while you're still figuring things out, because you understand what parts are confusing and need clarity, or are missing altogether.
</soapbox>

Another major step in this direction has Steven Peck's Getting Started guide, which gives us a single reference document with a unified voice for new users. One of the challenges in providing visibility to this work is in laying out the massive wall of links that is our current handbook landing page in a better manner. If you have ideas about that, we're collecting feedback at http://groups.drupal.org/node/6568.

...

sepeck's picture

The documentation stuff was just getting finished up and was released after Dries did the survey. The problem with the question though is that it is to vague.

What type of 'better' documentation. When people complain about a lack of documentation, they generally mean 'Something specific to what I am doing now!'

Amazon's picture

If we use the knowledge from both Drupal search and Google search it will help people find the docs. I suspect it's the navigation to relevant docs that is the problem. See latest search results from Drupal search below. I'll post AWSTATs search results in a follow up. Steven's re-org of the handbooks will probably help a lot.

Comments on handbooks are at an all time low, thanks to Steven and the docs team. A sure sign that docs are meeting the needs of their audience.

Just a note on comments

add1sun's picture

I'm not saying the handbook pages aren't getting better but I think the decrease in number of comments is really about a seriously concerted effort to clean them up, not necessarily because docs are meeting folks needs.

I have been focused on the task of cleaning comments since the spring. I went through a massive cleanup over a few months of reviewing all the existing pages with comments and deleting support requests. We have also been slowly chipping away at rolling in relevant comments. Lastly I do a daily review of all new comments in the handbook and immediately remove support requests so long nasty support threads with useful info mixed in don't even get started as well as doing simple roll-ins as I have time. This does help the handbooks get better but there are still large numbers of comments being added every day (mostly of the support request variety) - they are just being addressed on a regular basis now where I think they were backing up for a long time previously.

Great job on comments

Amazon's picture

You've done a great job on comments. As part of a micro improvement to Drupal.org I asked for this page to be developed with the intention that what you measure is what gets attention.

We measure comments here: http://drupal.org/handbook/comments and therefore it get's improved.

Perhaps comment submission should have a warning to not put support requests in the handbook. Or are you incorporating those support questions into the books themselves?

Please translate all these ideas into the wiki plan for the redesign.

Cheers,
Kieran

Better search

abhigupta's picture

I think it has already been mentioned many times ... that durpal site search can use much improvement compare to google search of the drupal.org site itself.

I would again suggest that we replace Drupal site search with Google Custom search ... I remember some of the arguments made against doing it ...

So, I think one way of settling this question, could be to replace the Drupal Site Search with Google Custom Search for a week. Then compare the number of new forum posts & searches that are generated that week compared to the previous week. If there is significant improvement using the google search than we should continue to use it.

webchick's picture

That's the biggest argument against it.

If Drupal.org is not using search.module, we lose all incentive to improve the core search module and make it better/faster/more powerful.

Now, you could argue that dropping search.module from core would be analogous to replacing our custom JS library with jQuery (it's complex, and few people understand its inner workings, they're going to improve theirs faster than we will ours), but we should think very carefully before executing such a move.

We should try this.

Amazon's picture

We should try this. Joomla uses Google custom search and it greatly impacts their Google rankings and improves their revenue from Google Advertising.

I would also like to see us make use of http://www.lullabot.com/blog/new-solr-search-module-works on the Drupal infrastructure.

Finally, if you look at Google's patents recently they are strongly moving toward semantic web searching. Drupal has a strong advantage in that we have a lot of semantic meta information about content and Drupal core search should be a test bed for innovation in semantic searching.

I would encourage you to add these ideas on searching to the redesign plan. It's a wiki, just dive in.

The benefit of search.module

jscheel's picture

The benefit of search.module lies (lays?) in its hooks. Basically, developers can hook into the searching and search theming. By going to google search, we lose those hooks. We also loose the ability to restrict searched content by role.

Other responses from Drupal.org improvements question

Amazon's picture

Here are the other responses to the improvements to Drupal.org survey.

  1. Regarding the search it is mostly due to the server performance. It is faster to use google to search the drupal site than to use drupal's search box. Thu, 9/27/07 2:52 PM

    1. For better documentation: Clear indication of what version documentation applies to, as well as a better structure. Mon, 9/17/07 1:33 AM

    2. module compatibility wizard known issues/overlaps/reliance most importantly-"users who use this module also like ...." Mon, 9/10/07 9:10 PM

    3. Better or more tutorials from start to finish of different types of websites - include best practices, most popular modules, ways of customizing for the business purpose Mon, 9/10/07 9:48 AM

    4. Code examples. Not just what's in the function, but how to use the function. Better organization of the documentation. What's there is fine, but finding something I know is there can be very difficult. Thu, 9/6/07 6:23 AM

    5. tester Wed, 9/5/07 11:58 AM

    6. easier to find and submit issues for core modules. tracker feeds for my account. Tue, 9/4/07 12:34 PM

    7. I assume you mean better documentation about Drupal rather than better documentation about how to use the site. Tue, 9/4/07 10:12 AM

    8. More flexability in modules and more information about how things on the drual site are done... and what modules and customisations are used Sun, 9/2/07 9:07 PM

    9. Documentation in DjVU format (no PDF ;) Sat, 9/1/07 8:52 AM

    10. Ssubscribing to issues without posting and a list of the users subscribed to an issue or at least the amount of them. Fri, 8/31/07 2:03 PM

    11. 1) Better overall organization, content is too haphazard - beter if there were some defined structure so people contributing could work within framework 2) Speed - it is sometimes very slow Fri, 8/31/07 12:45 PM

    12. Can we just use Google for searching drupal.org? It'd be much faster than having to remember to add site:drupal.org every time I do a search. Fri, 8/31/07 8:53 AM

    13. Turn signatures off, or at least make people donate to use them (e-mailed Amazon re this for association fundraising). Fri, 8/31/07 4:22 AM

    14. No clue Fri, 8/31/07 1:09 AM

    15. The slogan "community plumbing" is very unsexy. Compare to Django's "for perfectionists with deadlines" and you know what I'm talking about. While saying Drupal is synonymous with "community plumbing" is factually correct, it is a perfect example of Drupal being a software project by developers for developers. There are other areas where Drupal and drupal.org need much better marketing and UI design (for example, the icons used in D6's update status page use the wrong metaphors). Thu, 8/30/07 4:56 PM

    16. I will cover this in my presentation - while individuals in the community are very welcoming, will provide advice and support, generously I might add, unless you personally know these individuals, you are sort of locked out of things. Documentation is poor, hard to come by, etc. and let you know somebody who knows something, you have NO idea what is going on in the community. It's hard to track who's on what performance patch, or who's added what feature... it also fails to support most business requirements, it operates poorly in a multi-environment set up ( development, staging, production), etc. Thu, 8/30/07 9:44 AM

    17. better organisation and description of modules Wed, 8/29/07 9:57 PM

    18. Make it easier to group topics. Too many answers to questions spread out everywhere. Wed, 8/29/07 10:38 AM

    19. it would be great if the site (at least the home page) did a better job of answering for the lay person "what is Drupal?" Tue, 8/28/07 9:23 PM

    20. quickstart video tutorial- we're actually working on one. this is the one I produced for the Joomla CMS-> http://video.jumpbox.com/?app=joomla our goal is to make these open source apps accessible to non-technical people that don't understand linux/php/etc. we'd love to work with you guys to have the JumpBox for Drupal as a deployment option for beginners distributed via Drupal.org Tue, 8/28/07 12:01 PM

    21. Locating and comparing modules that have similar functions is an issue, along with potential compatability concerns between modules. Tue, 8/28/07 11:07 AM

    22. Add more structure to the documentation (I now, that's easier said than done) Tue, 8/28/07 9:07 AM

    23. More marketing as opposed to better marketing. Drupal can provide solutions to lots of problems but too many people don't know that. Tue, 8/28/07 6:38 AM

    24. Better content/metadata importation tools. Tue, 8/28/07 5:36 AM

    25. documentation in offline format (chm)would speed up the site by reducing searches. A function to turn forum commnts into handbook pages by admins would make the handbook information better Total seperation of the information of Drupal versions would make for less searches. Sun, 8/26/07 12:42 AM

    26. Please consider facilitating subscription to forum and support topics without having to first post in the thread. A "My Recent Posts" link in the main user menu block would also potentially help server load (e.g. eventually I bookmarked it, but for a long time I navigated first to Recent Posts, then to My Recent Posts - causing more server load than necessary - I suspect many users do the same). Better communication of posting rules in Handbook replies (e.g. rules or link by the comment form), and the addition of Comment_Mover would also help (often Handbook replies/questions get deleted with no notification to users who don't know the posting rules - inevitably causing upset users). Sat, 8/25/07 6:15 PM

    27. Documentation for contributed modules is too often absent. Documentation for modules (including core) is too often insufficient. Documentation of an overview of Drupal including vocabulary and concepts would be helpful. Sat, 8/25/07 5:23 PM

    28. Better orgainize existing documentation. Also review it to make sure it is relevant. More documentation for less experienced people. Sat, 8/25/07 3:53 PM

    29. I think Drupal would really benefit from some sort of free (ad-supported) or paid blogging platform ala Wordpress's wordpress.com. That is where we will truly get the number of users to make Drupal a product for everyday users. The massive, centralized user influx would both demand and supply usability improvements, bug reports, themes, and brand awareness. Right now we are censoring independent Drupal adoption to users who can both acquire web hosting and install a CMS (though installation barriers are falling dramatically of course). A professional usability/IA review of the website would be helpful as well - possibly funded by the Drupal Association. Sat, 8/25/07 11:55 AM

    30. RSS feeds for forum topics/issues (like what's provided by Comment RSS module) Sat, 8/25/07 9:21 AM

    31. Separate old documentation, snippets etc. more clearly by different versions Sat, 8/25/07 8:17 AM

    32. Site performance and appearance is really hurtful to Drupal's image. I've only been using it a week, and I'm THRILLED with it overall, but I loathe going to the Drupal.org site for anything. Faster page loads and letting users choose their own themes (supported by Drupal already ?!?!) would go a long way towards improving that. Seems that you could benefit more from the use of your own product, how ironic. Drupal on its own is plenty fast enough, just not Drupal.org. Fri, 8/24/07 6:09 PM

    33. Tutorials on setting up basic site types; like a blog, local charity or kids sports team. Would give people a better place to get some ideas on how to set up their site and make the initial Drupal experience a little less overwhelming. But first the site needs to be organized so novice users can find said content without search. Your expert users can use search to find the advanced content (that's why they are experts). There's too much information on the home and navigable pages. Fri, 8/24/07 1:18 PM

    34. Anything that helps identify the functionality/module one is looking for would be a great help. The module categories don't really help; links to related modules and comparisons of similar modules would be fantastic. Fri, 8/24/07 12:36 PM

    35. So much info in the membership pool, but the forum doesnt leverage that knowledge. I like the simplicity of the forum pack, phpBB etc are bloated. But the basic Drupal forum needs to be improved just a bi so that good help and sharing can be supported. Fri, 8/24/07 10:42 AM

    36. Most important: Navigation and information-architecture redesign that is intuitive rather than built for and by developers; user-tested by those outside the Drupal community and outside OS communities in general, and even who aren't developers: especially those people, in fact. Currently, it's easy to find something if you already know what it is, a sure sign of architectural issues. Fri, 8/24/07 3:18 AM

    37. Documentation for download Thu, 8/23/07 7:08 AM

    38. separation of documents, etc for different versions of D Thu, 8/23/07 1:49 AM

    39. More Ajax-based functionality built into the core. For example, clicking on tabs should not yield page reloads. Instead, they should simply refresh the content. Also, inline editing for areas such as member profiles etc. Wed, 8/22/07 10:40 PM

    40. syndication - with well known brands from any industry... synergy always helps ! Wed, 8/22/07 8:16 PM

    41. Drupal "profiles" - for example, the education profile/download is excellent. More of that Drupal for Elementary Schools, Drupal for Insurance Sales, Drupal for Churches, etc. Wed, 8/22/07 1:06 PM

    42. We need a quality check for modules. Some modules are really bad coded. So we need it to review and have to categories: premium modules with good code and 'normal' modules with some problems in funtion or/and code. Wed, 8/22/07 9:23 AM

    43. I'd really like taxonomy used in the handbooks. For instance, I suppose http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/locale belongs where it is, but it should also be possible to find it via keywords like "translation" and "language". A "search handbooks only" function would also be very nice. Wed, 8/22/07 8:01 AM

    44. (This counts as my two highest beneficial topics.) Search really needs optimization, waiting 30+ seconds per query is rough on users and on server(s). Wed, 8/22/07 6:47 AM

    45. The various parts of the site need to be more tightly integrated. There are lots of handbooks for contributed modules, but almost none are linked to directly from the pages of the modules they are associated with. From a beginner's perspective there are way too many places to look for information and answers. Should I post on the forums, to an issue queue, to a mailing list, to IRC, to groups.drupal.org, keep searching on my own, or what? Everyone communicates differently, so I can understand the need to have a lot of options, but it can be overwhelming for beginners. In that maze of choices are a lot of dead ends. I've had questions go unanswered in just about every one of those avenues. Tue, 8/21/07 10:12 PM

    46. Drupal presents itself well and has an excellent reputation. Still, accessing information on searches gave results for all pages on site, rather than just searching for a modules or specific category. Sample data for BOOK, PAGES, STORY and BLOG would be a welcome addition to an install option. Tue, 8/21/07 7:03 PM

    47. This is too confusing. User ratings and/or reputation management versus Rating and/or reviews of contributed themes and modules versus A way to differentiate modules by quality/popularity What is the difference???? Tue, 8/21/07 2:20 PM

    48. maybe rate modules like debian packages - automatically (opt-in feature after installing new drupal)? Tue, 8/21/07 2:04 PM

    49. Section for suggesting/requesting new modules or new functionality Tue, 8/21/07 1:37 PM

    50. include more popular and high-quality modules in the core Tue, 8/21/07 7:57 AM

    51. I am happy with drupal.org Tue, 8/21/07 7:38 AM

    52. A Drupal "beginners" section Tue, 8/21/07 7:14 AM

    53. I wouldn't go as far as a "marketplace for Drupal services", but a directory of companies offering Drupal services, sorted by category (development, design...), would help a lot of people. Tue, 8/21/07 7:11 AM

    54. I mentioned this on the Drupal forums before - there is no standard template for Drupal module documentation... with 80% of the available modules it's difficult to tell what it's even supposed to do without installing the thing first. And the main Drupal documentation is all over the map as well. Tue, 8/21/07 6:36 AM

    55. I particularly feel the "Post installation" forum is home for too many separate topics. A "finer" taxonomy would help some of the forums. Tue, 8/21/07 6:20 AM

    56. Better way of searching issue queue for core. I'd love to contribute bugs but it is difficult to figure out if one has been submitted already. Tue, 8/21/07 4:35 AM

    57. although it proves that drupal community is healthy and active, somehow drupal is bloated with different modules which share the same goals: fivestar and jrating, greybox and thickbox, forward send and tellafriend, ... to sum it up, a lot of modules could be merged together, and also a lot of module A adding a little bit of functionality to an other module B should resign and instead submit patches to module A's queue. i strongly believe that being a good drupal maintainer means also putting ego aside and join forces. Tue, 8/21/07 4:32 AM

    58. Separate development and user/community site. Tue, 8/21/07 3:56 AM

    59. Better documentation/examples/support for JQuery. More drag and drop interaction to assign ratings, taxonomy, node realtionships... Tue, 8/21/07 1:53 AM

      • More demos of modules - Better module search Tue, 8/21/07 1:16 AM
    60. A Better Forum! Tue, 8/21/07 1:04 AM

    61. The site structure should mirror the different target groups: (potential) end users, beginners, hard core developers, etc. Tue, 8/21/07 12:38 AM

    62. 1: Easier upgrade from one version to the next (ie 4.6 to 4.7 to 5.0 each time a nightmare :) 3: More ajax implemented options for easier user interface... Mon, 8/20/07 11:59 PM

    63. ooo boy stupid surveymoneky and ff bug, i can only select one COLUMN, not one row! so here in text: marketplace 1 redesign 3 redesign 2 navigate modules 2 doc 3 search 3 pdf 5 email 5 page loads 3 rating 3 user ratings 2 Mon, 8/20/07 11:58 PM

    64. By "A way to differentiate modules by quality/popularity" I also include a way to relate modules to each other. The current taxonomy isn't enough. People other than the module author should be able to point out that two modules do almost the same thing. Mon, 8/20/07 7:30 PM

    67. A way to know about new releases and updated modules and themes. Mon, 8/20/07 4:14 PM

    68. I specifically DON'T want to see reviews of contributed modules and themes. These are way too easy to rig, and tie up community resources in managing abuse of the system. Objective measurements like metrics and project_usage modules are a far better indicator of usage/quality, imo. Mon, 8/20/07 4:07 PM

    69. Grading of modules by:- Documentation, user-friendliness, code-conformity (e.g. using existing hooks & functions) ...also... require at least SOME documentation before submiting module. Mon, 8/20/07 3:30 PM

    70. Reduction in the snippy attitude of some of the members Mon, 8/20/07 3:15 PM

      • Documentation and Developement more organizated, and in one place. * Development more documentated, with more information and with timeline, roadmap, with more simple to find information about the new release. * more simple to see if CVS messages is about drupal 4/5.2/6.X ?? Some filter. http://drupal.org/project/cvs/3060 * Better way to find good modules. (ratting? popularity?) * One Category with sites using drupal. Mon, 8/20/07 2:40 PM
    71. I often recommend Drupal to a non-technical client. They go to drupal.org and are very put-off by the lack of a user-friendly explanation about what it is all about. Mon, 8/20/07 2:15 PM

    72. multiple (readonly?) mirrors of the site to ensure api.drupal.org and handbook are always available. Mon, 8/20/07 1:55 PM

    73. Usability aspects like a clearer menu in projet module (view all pending issues, view all pending tasks and the filter options for search in issue queue). Better categorisation of modules. Mon, 8/20/07 1:35 PM

    74. I think a way to better categorize the modules would help. The big thing that comes to mind is in terms of functionality. Does the module extend menus, taxonomy, images, content types etc. Mon, 8/20/07 12:49 PM

    75. This form is buggy on question 2, page 2 Mon, 8/20/07 11:58 AM

    76. Higher profile and richer recipes for assembling "building block" modules like Views, CCK, Actions, etc. that have replaced one-off modules like location, event, image, etc. Mon, 8/20/07 11:55 AM

    77. We really need to customize the search functions on d.o so people can find what they want EVERY SINGLE TIME. I propose a customized version of the search.module as a block on the Handbook pages that only searches the documentation. Please see http://drupal.org/node/113589 for more info. 78. Being able to track issue queues with email. Mon, 8/20/07 11:39 AM

    79. On the ratings stuff, I would avoid user ratings as that can easily explode into animosity and acrimony. Allowing +1 ratings of comments, though, would be good. (Downratings, though, again can cause ill feelings that could harm the community.) The main thing, to me, is that Drupal.org could showcase more of Drupal's own power and flexibility. Mon, 8/20/07 11:23 AM

    80. Marketing is important and might require some more coordination. The handbooks should be splitted in "core" docs, so the mandatory docs that are updated with each core version. Then, an additional section (or pages somehow marked in the main docs) should contain "contributed docs". For module development, a community effort should try to streamline/improve the docs (esp. structure!) for the perspective of someone who is aldready confident in php but never developped a drupal module. Compare e.g. the cakephp docs. Mon, 8/20/07 11:19 AM

    81. As said before, joomla's is a model to follow to describe and test modules before installing them. API documentation is the best I work on form the different free software projects I know, but drupal.books aren't much collaborative and it's structure is difficult to follow and search.

user ratings = divided community

elvis2's picture

I agree with # 81, rating users will create a divide in the community. I think rating drupal modules is not good either. A better method would use the download data, access data, or something else - like forumla that includes all of the above taking into account the number of issues and how old the module is (creation date). Rating modules would cause competition for similar modules and in the end cause division.

Ratings

Harry Slaughter's picture

The question is not whether or not user based module/theme ratings will exist. They will. The question is will the primary source for such ratings be officially sanctioned by Drupal or be provided elsewhere (drupalmodules.com)?

Given that a rating system is the number one thing drupal users are asking for, I'm not sure why people are still asking whether or not we should have one.

I work with Drupal daily, and it's been roughly a year since I was able to keep on top of most/all modules. So I know the average user is likely lost in this sea of themes/modules as well.

User ratings work for Netflix, Amazon, Mozilla, Joomla, CNet, O'Reilly, etc... They can work for Drupal too.

Hi Dries,

I know this page is old, but people still arrive here by searching, so you probably need to update image path in your post to http://buytaert.net/sites/buytaert.net/files/images/drupal/drupal-org-wi...

Adding Background Images

Vemma's picture

My wish is to add to the core a simple way to add a background image to the body & header. In a perfect world in the theme settings or the module Dynamic Backgrounds.
