Drupal 8 - Core Initiatives Progress Update - 9/15/11 Edition

What this is about:
We've been hearing a lot from the community about wanting more transparency with regard to the Drupal 8 initiatives and their advancement. Every two weeks, the Drupal 8 initiative owners, along with Dries, webchick, and a team of project managers have “scrum of scrum” calls where each person goes around and talks about what they worked on since last time, what they’re going to work on for next time, where they’re blocked, and how the community can help.

Separate UI and Content settings for language

One thing I don't particularly like about the Drupal multilingual support is that it lacks a possibility to have separate settings for the UI, both backend and frontend, and the content. Personally I would prefer to be able to set a default language for the UI on a site, but be able to access content in other languages I understand as well.

What about multilingual needs for files?

I am thrilled that multilingual is a core initiative for Drupal 8. However, so far I have only seen discussions about text content. I believe it is important that we also address the needs for files as well.

This post is going to be heavily skewed to how I as a site builder + content editors would like to be able to work with the multilingual needs for files.

As I see it there are three main differences when it comes to multilingual needs for files:

SEO and multilingual website with language per domain name

I would like some comments on basic questions

In a general way,
French being the default, if I have www.myFrench.com and www.myGerman.com, will I have to reference the two? Only the French one? In my point of view, I would like the 2 to be referenced.

If yes (meaning the two are possible)
I can’t see how to do that because it’s same website.
In Google, generally I choose option of putting a validation html file at root of website.
But if I have a second domain name for same website, I just must validate the same validation file and it will works?

import of fields from multi-lingual D6 site into D7 fails

I am cross-posting this from the CCK issue queue:
http://drupal.org/node/1063852

If using more than one language the story is the following:

  • the fields import via migrate content into D7 and display fine while viewing nodes
  • going to edit node and all the fields are blank, no values are shown here, like creating a new node
  • D7 field table rows have a column for language but instead of getting set to the proper language on import, the column is left as "und."

Hide the active language in Language Switcher block in Drupal 7

I'd like to have the language switcher block in core Drupal 7 hide the active language. (ie: If you're reading the English page, don't display a link to the English page.)

I've come across this solution for Drupal 6, which seems hefty for a seemingly trivial task (and doesn't work in D7):

I'm new to Drupal, and I am having difficulties knowing where to start.

Bilingual language toggle in Drupal 7

It would be helpful to know how those developing bilingual sites are creating a language toggle as on standard gov't pages. If you're on the English page, you should see a link to the French page and vice-versa.

In Drupal 7 I'm using the core language switcher block of the locale module. However that displays a link to the current active language as well as to the translated language, and doesn't seem to be configurable. I'm not sure if I can override it somehow?

I've come across this solution for Drupal 6, which seems pretty hefty for such a small issue:

CSS Handling in a Multilingual Site

Hello there,
I apologize if this topic has already been discussed but I was unable to find what I am looking for.
I am wondering what would be the best way to implement CSS in multilingual site. I noticed some developers use classes appended by i18n module. Others switch CSS based on the language attribute. I am kind of interested in switching the CSS for every language, not only LTR and RTL. What are the pros/cons of each scenario? And How would you approach it?

Cheers

Flerspråkigt i D7

Multilingual D7 Session for DrupalCon Chicago 2011

Support for multilingual D7 is not ready yet, but it certainly be until DrupalCon Chicago in March. We're so committed to it that we proposed a session on about just that:
http://chicago2011.drupal.org/sessions/drupal-7-s-multilingual-system

Once you register to this DrupalCon (which I'm sure you're going to), remember to check out this session proposal and vote for it.

It's going to be fun.

You'll be hearing about how Drupal manages translations, how to build a multilingual theme and how to get existing translations for Drupal core and contributed modules.

Until the session, you can view the status in our multilingual D7 progress page.
