Drupal and Events/Calendar entries

I'm considering a Drupal project with listings of things like gigs, and I'm hoping there's a module which can handle recurring events, not just "thing X happens on Date Y at location Z" but "Thing X happens on the first Thursday of the month from now until Christmas".

The word Event in Drupal parlance often seems to refer to things where you need to manage the number of attendees, close off attendance when you've issued 100 tickets and so on. That isn't a requirement.

What module or combination of modules do you think I should look into?

Share room at DrupalCon Sydney in Feb

Does anyone want to share a room with me at Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach for DrupalCon? (that's where the conf is and looks like a very nice hotel)
The Village View Room is cheapest at $235/night and will accommodate 3. That's about $78.33 each per night, so for 5 nights (5th to 10th) it would cost $391.67 each.

Drupal as a career change? In Newcastle?

I am a bookkeeper who was introduced to Drupal three years ago as my employer needed someone to keep their website up to date.
I absolutely loved using it and I set up my own Drupal website for my wedding, since shut down. But loved changing the CSS to make it look beautiful.
I am a mother and never got around to finishing my IT degree, but I did manage to get a grade 6 in the third year software engineering project at UQ, my role was all the PHP programming of the project. So I know once I got into a role I am capable and I would thoroughly enjoy it.
