Views Developers

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

This group exists as a place for people interested in the group to talk about Views development; all development talk is encouraged here, from people who want to work on Views core to people who are interested in Views' API for their own modules. This is a good place to:

1) ask questions
2) talk about problems
3) propose ideas.
4) talk about views related projects.

This group is now unmoderated, and anyone can join at any time. Public posting of ideas is encouraged.

What I want most out of this is to keep track of what views related projects are going on and their status, and proposals for what people would like to see as Views moves forward.

Note: This is a working group. Do not post jobs here, you will lose your posting privileges entirely. Do not post support requests here; they will be deleted.

Views Projects for Google Summer of Code 2010

Hi all- as you may already know, The Google Summer of Code is about to get started for 2010. At the moment we are trying to come up with ideas that students can craft proposals around, and I was hoping that we could get a few Views related proposals. IMO- nothing can raise your community profile, outside of working a lot on core, like Views related work, and it also happens to be one of the most marketable skills within the thriving Drupal ecosystem. So- it would be great if we could get a couple of Views related projects proposed.

Please, please, please, if you have any ideas for how a student could spend three months working on views related tasks, please add ideas to the Google Summer of Code Group (and consider mentoring as well- it's an awesome way to help out, meet up and coming developers, and increase your standing within the community).

dereine already put forth a few ideas for backends for Views as a wiki on SoC group (http://groups.drupal.org/node/57168 ), which is quoted below. Because that post is a wiki I thought we could move the discussion for his proposal to this thread.

Thanks for chiming in and helping out!

Creating a "smart" search field for views

I've got a site running some old but concise code that essentially allows people to search 3 different fields using a single field. A user can type in a zip code, county, or a name. If the script detects a 5-digit number, it geocodes the zip code using a built-in database and then performs a geocode search. If they type a regular string, it goes against both the county and the name fields.

Creating a "report generator" using views - dynamically override "exclude from view" property?

Hi everyone,

Here is a wild idea.

I want to make a "report generator" for users. The idea is to create a master table view (lots of rows, lots of fields/columns). Users would have a link that says "generate custom report". They would be taken to a form that is essentially an exposed filter form, plus a list of the data fields with checkboxes (or similar). They would be able to select all fields, or just a subset.

New Views Examples Module... let me know what you want added

I've just contributed the Views Examples module which is a collection of views examples that can be enabled and used directly within views.

http://drupal.org/project/views_examples

Most of the examples are fairly straightforward but I want to add some more complex ones as well. I do have one somewhat complex example using the views_groupby module to create a view of nodes similar to the node being viewed based on taxonomy terms (sorted by the number of common terms). This was something that someone asked if I knew how to do because they couldn't find it anywhere in on the web.

Commenting not availabe in view

I've been trying to get the default drupal comments list and form to show up for this view I've created but it just won't work. I've even tried installing the comment block mod and placing the blocks where they should show up.

The view has a page and a block display (page is articles/%) and I've made sure that the page content type has comments turned on (read and write) yet still nothing. Commenting works everywhere else but not on the views page.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Live Publishing and Views

I'm looking for a solution to a content publication issue and I think Views might be the answer, but I'm not sure how or if I could configure it to work. Any advice, ever for alternative methods, is appreciated. The situation is this:

Arguments not reacting as expected

I've been trying to get this View page to build based on an nid I'm passing in the url.

Seems like pretty simple stuff but for some reason it is defying my efforts at every turn.

I had it working using the title but there is a chance of duplicate titles so I have to use nid (like I should have from the start).

So I have a url set as: articles/[article title]/[nid]

In my view I have the path set as: articles/%/%

I have arguments set as:
Node: Title (providing default value using php code: $args[1] = arg(1); return $args;)

How to add Sort (when clicking on the title) on Content Taxonomy Fields and Node reference.

Drupal 6.15.

Hi,

I hope I post at the right place.

I need help.

I tried to figure out how to add Sort (when clicking on the title) for Content Taxonomy Fields and Node reference.

Here's the situation.

I have a node "apartement". With the CCK I added some fields like Price (integer), Description (text), Location (node reference), Size (Content Taxonomy Fields) Availability Date (date).

In the Basic settings of my view, Style = Table.

Creating custom views sort handler

Hi guys & gals,

I've been playing around with Views and getting it integrated into my module recently. Everything is working great - I am managing a sports league, so can now get people to display their leagues using views. Most of the information is stored in databases for simple retrieval, but I had to create custom field handlers for some, as some of the fields do not have fields in the table - for example I have the following table structure to store a teams position in a league

Standings
won
lost
drawn
goals_for
goals_against
bonus_points

Problem grouping taxonomy term and parent term in view

Hi all,

My view has only two two fields: business category and business type to display the categorys and subcategorys of businesses e.g. Property ¦ Estate agents or Legal ¦ Family lawyers, both fields are taxonomy terms, one is the parent of the other.

I can output the view as a table nicely with the first column of parent terms repeated for each different child term. All good.

Now all I want to do is group them so so that I get the grouping header of parent term followed by a number of rows of child term. Can't get it to work.

Ideas for Views 3 documentation

With View 2 completely stable and Views 3 in its firsts alpha releases, it would be nice to start to discuss how should be documented Views 3.

AS we know, there is three group of users for views, Developers, Themes, and web Designers.

Views 2 has a pretty good documentation for Themers and Designers, however know "How to" create a new handler, or a field handler, or a plugin is not so well documented.

For other side, a lots of UI changes has been included in Views 3, they are not stable yet, but they will. This implies a modification in the images of views help.

Theming Views Slideshow output

I just started playing with views slideshow, but I'm having a hard time finding any documentation on theming the output. I can do some with css, but I don't understand how the tpl that comes with the views slideshow module (there's only one tpl file) works. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Views 3 UX Season is open

If there were a first outline of a Views 3 UX plan, we'd announce that

Views 3 UX season is open!

Views defines a big part of how site-builders learn to think about slicing and dicing their content & other stuff. Inviting interaction designers to join in architecting the user interface for the upcoming version 3.

And that in short review, we identified a first three main areas that need work:

  • "Too busy! Everything all the time. Provide an easier path into the jungle please."
  • "There's got to be something else we can do for that bottom drawer settings part."

Views display name and templates

I created a view that works just fine. I then exported it and started playing with a few of it's properties.

I changed the machine name for the display (display_id) so that it's more easily referenced by me, a non-machine.

<?php
$handler
= $view->new_display('block', 'Sans author', 'sans_author');
?>

So, it looks to work just fine but in reality it doesn't quite.

I will go to the theme information and scan for files and it will find the files just fine. I can even save with no apparent errors.

Speeding up a query to retrieve birthdays

Hi all,

I'm wondering if someone else has come to this issue. We need to generate a birthdays view. We're using a Date field in the user profile so users can enter their birthday date. However, querying the date field to retrieve birthdays may impact performance, I think. The view could be cached, but still, when executed against a database of thousands of users, it could impact. So I'm thinking about a way to speed up this kind of queries.

Quick question about the views ui

Hey,

I have a quick question about the view builder ui. I am wanting to add options into the top level of this ui when my module is turned on. I can see how to add sub-fields into areas (e.g. Using the hook_views_plugins I can add stuff to cache, style etc) but say if I wanted to add options for the "Advanced Settings" category how would I do that?
So far i've created a plugin as per below but I don't know have to register it in my module so it can do its thing

class my_views_plugin extends views_plugin {

function option_definition() {

Views: Global : Custom Image

Hello,

As i see there are only 2 options for Global Fields in views :

Global: Custom text -> Provide custom text or link.
Global: View result counter -> Displays the actual position of the view result

The future of Views will have:
Global: Custom image -> Provide custom image. ?

I'm still learning drupal views theming.
I need to add a custom image linked to node in a view, how can i achieve this?

Many thanks,

Using views to build a block which shows the nodes holding the same terms as the current node(node/NID)

Hi,

I am trying to learn views like this one: http://drupaleasy.com/blogs/ryanprice/2008/06/using-views-2-drupal-6-cre...
It looks like this view should work on a node/NID page, but I tried and could only get it to work correct on term/TID pages.
Is this correct?

The phpcode of the term argument is:

$node = node_load(arg(1));
if ($node && $node->taxonomy) { foreach($node->taxonomy as $term) {$terms[] = $term->tid;
} return implode('+' , $terms);
} else { return;
}

Using CCK and Views to change a content-type's frontend appearance

Hi,

I've created a new content type with CCK and called it "Blogs2". Very basic stuff (Title, Description, Additional Plain Textfield for an URL). When I click "Create Content -> Blogs2" I can create a new "Blogs2 Node" (Image 1).

After saving my new node, I get this view (Image 2). The Textfield for the URL is at the bottom of the description so you can't see it right now.
