Renaming files/directories & Drupal permissions on Ubuntu Linux

Thank's to Andy's help I was able to understand how to do a Drupal installation in Ubuntu. I was unable to copy and rename the settings.php file using the terminal so I cheated and did it manually(along with giving it the correct read & write abilities or so I think) The one thing that I can't figure out before I install the new commerce site is how to rename the folder from drupal-7.8 to just drupal? Every time I tried it, it told me that it doesn't exist or that I don't have permissions even though I was using the sudo command. Any ideas? Thank you!

November first Tuesday Drupal meetup - Install fest!

Start:
2011-11-01 18:00 - 21:00 America/Denver
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Our 'regularly-scheduled' First Tuesday Drupal Meetup will be held on Tuesday November 11 from 6:00-9:00 pm (thought we may not go that long) at Zootown Brew in Missoula.

Since we just ended a session of the LLC Drupal class, several people are interested in moving their class site to a web hosting account, or getting Drupal installed and running on a laptop or a web host. So this will be a hands-on user-to-user session to help you get Drupal running wherever you want to.

Things we'll focus on, depending on who shows up and what they want:

  • Installing and running Drupal on your laptop
  • Installing Drupal on a remote web hosting account
  • Moving your existing Drupal site to a web hosting account

What to Bring, how to prepare

  • You should bring a laptop, can be Windows, Mac, or Linux OS
  • If you want to set up Drupal on a web hosting account, you should purchase and set up your hosting account before the meetup. But if you're not sure what hosting to purchase, you can bring a credit card and we may be able to help you get a hosting account at the meetup.
  • If you want to use remote hosting, you should install an FTP/SFTP program on your computer. Cyberduck works well on Mac and Windows and is free.

Meetup Details
Tuesday, November 1
6:00 to 9:00 pm (but show up any time)
ZooTown Brew (we may be upstairs in the café or in the downstairs meeting space, ask around)

Virtual Box Installation

I think I've been spending way too much time staring at a installation screens, with the worst part being that so far none of them have worked. My Debian installation failed, so I just removed the Ubuntu Netbook edition and installed the full Ubuntu Desktop edition. I got as far as installing the Apache server but nothing else. The Virtual Box installation seemed to go pretty smoothly that was until I tried using it. Somehow the words "Fatal Error" are never a good sign. Oh, the joys of user error. :)

Newbie

Hello!

My name is Ingrid and I am new to Drupal. I met Scott today, who gave me lots of great advice and was kind enough to introduce me to this group. I look forward to "meeting" everyone! And as you can tell I really have no clue what's going on. I just posted on someone else's discussion. Sorry!

Creating Drop-Down Menus

Hi! I'm working on creating some drop-down menus within my main menu and I've run into a snag that has me baffled. I installed the Nice Menus module and configured a block to work with the main menu (which I have located in the header) and I moved the block into the menu bar block section of my theme and I get two menus (one with the drop-down, one without). So, I thought the main menu must already be in the menu bar block, but it's not, it's actually disabled!

Free Online Database Class

I just enrolled in this online class from Stanford: Introduction to Databases (http://www.db-class.org/). I don't have any idea what the quality of the lectures or class materials will be (or how helpful it may be to Drupal developers), but nothing lost in checking it out!

If anyone else enrolls and wants to study together (aka: let me benefit from your superior intellect!) just hit me up.

Configuring Drush

I finally got a Virtualbox set up (so easy using Qickstart!! Thanks Scott!). Now, I'm working on getting Drush up and running. Quickstart has it all configured for my local site, but I'm trying to get it going on my hosted site. I downloaded and unzipped the drush tar ball in my home/username folder. I'm now trying to create an alias to get it going and seem to be stuck. I tried using these instructions: http://knol.google.com/k/how-to-install-drupal-with-drush#

Spam

Lately, I've been getting spammed like crazy in the comments on my site. I have Mollom installed, but it doesn't seem to be catching them. I really wanted to avoid moderating comments, but I;m getting like 10-20 spam comments a day. Any advice on how to limit the spam? Should I try some different modules than Mollom?

Thanks!

How To Solve All Your Problems

Great post by lullabot's Karen Stevenson on how to use the Drupal issue queues, select module versions, how to test bug fixes, and how to post to issue queues so maintainers can best help you:

My new site was in the paper!!!

http://ravallirepublic.com/news/local/article_ef0e0820-8cc0-11e0-a512-00...

Of course, they left out the quote where I talked about how it uses the Drupal content management system and how much help I've received from this group... but, I think it's a pretty positive article. Can't wait to check my Analytics and see how much traffic this drives to the site!

First, I'd like to thank the academy. And also Scott and Andy for making this moment possible ;)

P.S. It's a slow news day in the Bitterroot.

Event type:
User group meeting

Our regularly-scheduled "Third Thursday" Drupal Meetup will be held on Thursday, June 16 from 4:00-6:30 pm at Ruby's Inn and Convention Center. Inspired by some recent chatter in our group, we'll be discussing the "Command Line." Topics include:

  • It's just a computer: An Introduction to the Command Line
  • Tools and Utilities for getting to the Command Line
  • Basic Linux Commands for Web Servers
  • Using Drush to manage your Drupal site via the Command Line
  • This presentation is geared towards folks who have little to no experience with SSH or other command line utilities. If you're a Linux sysadmin, you should come, too, and teach us some tricks between lessons!

    When to update

Scott and Christopher were discussing updating core on the discussion about calendar/date. I have a quick question, but wanted to separate it out as its own discussion. When do you typically do your updates? Does it depend on the site? Do you set your alarm to 2:30 am and do it then? I've been monitoring Google Analytics and it looks like Sunday night is my best bet, but I wanted to see what others do.
    Thanks!

    Boron (HTLM5 base theme)

Curious if anyone in the group has used the Boron theme? Sounds like this might be a good theme to be working with especially when HTML5 becomes common place on browsers. http://drupal.org/project/boron

    Page Not Found Error

Andy very graciously set up a test site for me and I've been playing with it a bit. I moved the slideshow to the main content block of the page and created an hours block for all pages. I really like the way that it looks and would like to implement it on the live site, but I ended up with a funky "Page not found" error. I think because I had originally set up the site with a static basic page as the home page, that Drupal is still looking for that page. But, I went through and changed everything to be and it didn't go away.

    Drup-a-Que!

    Start:
    2011-06-07 18:00 - 21:00 America/Denver
    Organizers:
    Event type:
    User group meeting

Let's kick off the beautiful Montana summer with a friendly social event at my house: A Drup-a-que. It's like a barbecue, but geekier.

I'll provide some burgers and hot dogs with condiments as well as a few side dishes and drinks. If you have special dietary needs/desires or you just want to bring something special, please feel free. I'll have a grill available, so you can cook up your favorite meat/non-meat entree when you arrive.

Bring your drink of choice (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and a side dish or desert (if you want).

Significant others and children are welcome.

    Website Live

So, today we went live with our new Drupal site!! The URL is bitterrootpubliclibrary.org. Please feel free to check it out and give me pointers, advice, etc. It still definitely needs some work... I'm working on making the sidebars work better on a smaller screen and I have a few links to fix. I'll also start deleting some of the sample content and hopefully add real content.

A big (really big!) thank you to Scott and Andy. Without the class and your guidance the site never would have made it!

    Calendar/Date Update

Ok... So I posted the things that I attempted this morning here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/137409#comment-486629. Andy pointed out that having them as a comment on our meet-up will probably make it hard for other people to find. So, I tried with a fresh Drupal install (with absolutely only those four modules running) and ran into the SQL syntax error which I found was an issue here: http://drupal.org/node/1137538. There is a comment there about updating a line in the calendar module code that I did do, but it did not fix the error.

Tomorrow: Acquia webinar on using Views in Drupal Gardens

I've been enjoying using Drupal Gardens for some small sites – its power and polish are helping me get slick Drupal sites done fast. Recently Acquia has added the full power of Views 3.0 to Drupal Gardens, and tomorrow they're offering a free webinar to show how Views can enhance your Drupal Gardens site.

I imagine this will be useful to Drupal users wanting to get a better handle on Views and its latest features, even if you don't use Drupal Gardens.

    From the webinar page:
