UM Web Standards

I am fishing for thoughts on how to create a consistent header on every page of a Drupal 6 site in order to be compliant with the UM Web Standards - similar to what is at the top of the FireCenter page. Would this best be accomplished with a php snipit or 3rd party module? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Niels

Drupal panels

OMG! Do I love the panels module.

I haven't delved deeply into panels and mini-panels just yet but...

I was driving myself crazy coding my front page so I had a two panel gateway into two separate sites. Actually they are all on the same install and really just one site. I wanted two distinct pictures (jpegs) that represented each the site/side they were hyper-linked to and to have the text above centered. No matter how I Div'ed the node in the editor I couldn't get even and centered text nor the hyper-linking pictures satisfactorily positioned.

Multiple themes-same Parent site

I desired a module to allow theme switching and special node type assignments. I wanted to have a splash page that led to two different looking sites even though it was one master site.

Drupal core doesn't yet have this feature built in like other CMS's do. ThemeKey to the rescue!

drupalize.me

Our friends at Lullabot have just launched drupalize.me, a subscription site with access to the entire Lullabot video library. This includes all the videos in the Lullabot learning series (some of which Lullabot donated in DVD format to our group library) as well as many other hands-on videos from the Do It With Drupal conference. In essence this is Lullabot's Lynda.com-style training video site, just for Drupal (well, and jQuery too!)

Subscriptions are $55/month. Use the coupon code SUPERDRUPAL for $20 off the first month. That offer expires on November 19th. Considering the price of the DVD's, if you're serious about learning Drupal this is a terrific opportunity.

I'm talking to Lullabot about possible discounts for our group members, and will update you when I know any more details.

Two cool podcasts Nodequeue & Node References modules from Mustardseed

If you have never seen Bob and his podcasts from Mustardseed, now is your chance to and to bookmark his lessons. Granted some 'casts do not go deep down the rabbit holes but he does give great tutes to get one started.

I had been struggling to understand all the switches and what the cause and effect is with aspects of some Drupal modules. The two referenced podcasts help sort some of this out. Hope they help you as well.

This podcast is regarding Node References:

10 Essential Drupal Modules for Higher Earnings | Website Magazine

WordPress, WordPress, WordPress – all anyone talks about anymore is WordPress.

A recent comparison of the top CMS/blogging platforms found that WordPress is growing at a significantly higher rate than competitors Joomla and Drupal. However, upon closer inspection of the data, it is apparent that Drupal ranks first in one very important category – earnings. At least among freelance and work-at-home Web professionals.

Co-Working Session

Start:
2010-10-25 13:00 - 19:00 America/Denver
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed.

We're gonna try something new next week. I'll be working downtown at ZooTown Brew on Monday, October 25 from 1:00pm - 7:00pm, and I invite any interested group members to stop by for part or all of that time for a bit of co-working.

This means that, if you come, you can just sit and work on your own projects, converse with others about Drupal or CSS or whatever, or look to others for help with any specific questions you may have.

How to get the most out of this session

Everyone is welcome to attend. You don't have to help anyone else out, if you don't want to. However, most people have something to offer other people. If someone has a question to which you know the answer, don't hesitate to help them out.

If you have questions/problems you want some help resolving at this session, here are some tips to get the best results:

  • A general "help me with Drupal" probably isn't the best way to approach it. Think of a specific area or two in which you need the most help.
  • This isn't limited to Drupal questions. HTML, CSS, etc, etc are welcome topics, too.
  • Respect that others may be working. If the topic drifts too far from where it started, it may be time to reel things back in or give the helper/helpee a break.

Creating a Simple Photo Slideshow in Drupal

Drupal has taken it pretty hard regarding its image handling abilities. I won't say that it's not warranted. Drupal 7 has really made some improvements to image handling. The instructions here are for building a simple photo slideshow in Drupal 6. The process would be different (read "easier") in Drupal 7.

CSS. hmmm..

Ahhh, nothing like a rousing Drupal session to get the spark going! A big thanks goes out to everyone who attended. Great questions, great answers!

After getting the Drupal gears lubed up a bit more, I am continuing to see where a solid foundation in CSS can go a long way in continuing development. I am familiar with firebug and have done some minor themeing, but I really need to reach out and grasp how CSS works on a higher-level to be more efficient and continue onward with things like Javascript and the DOM.
