[Drupal 414 meetup] Content types, fields and content strategy

Start:
2015-03-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

One of the main strengths in Drupal is the ability to create content types that represent something you want on your site (for example, "event", "article", etc) and put custom fields on them.

Whether its creating a blog, a Views-powered slideshow, or pretty much anything you could imagine... understanding how to create custom content types in Drupal is an essential skill to have!

In this presentation Jason Gordon will be discussing content types and fields in 3 parts:

[Drupal 414 meetup] Headless Drupal 7: RESTful + Backbone

Start:
2015-02-19 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Headless Drupal has been a hot topic lately, and if you're an advanced-level developer, you already know exactly what this is, and why it's useful.

On the other hand, if you're not part of this club, you're probably asking yourself WHAT IS THIS NEW THING AND WHY DO I WANT TO USE IT?

In this session (by Raphael), we'll start from a basic level, and find out exactly what a RESTful web service is, and why they've become so popular. Then, we’ll explore current solutions in the Drupal ecosystem, before focusing on the main topic, the RESTful module in Drupal 7. We’ll discover how, with only two files, we can create a powerful REST API that we can put to use immediately on any Drupal 7 site.

After a quick break for questions, we'll dive into the second half, where we’ll find out how to consume out new REST API using a variety of client-side technologies, from the lowly cURL to the mighty Backbone.js.

Virtual participation over Google Hangouts

If you want to participate in the meetup but can't make it down physically, no worries - you can participate over Google Hangouts!

We'll be starting the feed at 6:30pm - you can either use Google Hangouts to participate fully, ie. you can ask questions with your voice and interact (Google Hangouts link will be posted in comments on the Meetup.com page at 6pm), or watch passively on YouTube.

Organizers:
Event type:

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Unlike most of our monthly meetups, there isn't going to be a presentation this month. Instead, we're going to do an interactive session where we:

  • Discuss the topics and plans for future Drupal414 meetups in 2015
  • Solve specific Drupal problems that other members are having

So, think of some problems you're having on live or testing Drupal sites and bring them to the meetup for us to solve!

The best food at a Meetup!

Looking for a Drupal Mentor/Advisor in Madison, WI

Hello! I'm new to the world of Drupal. Although I want to do most of the work myself, I am looking for someone I can turn to when I hit the eventual snags in this project. I would prefer someone in the Madison area. Although Drupal seems to have an excellent community, I am willing to pay someone as needed for advice, assistance, and problem solving who lives in this my area.

Conditional popups in Drupal

I want to create popups that invite visitors to sign up for an email list when they click on a specific type of link (node type). I need it to stop appearing once they have signed up. I do not know how to do this in Drupal.

I am using the Open Outreach distribution, which includes RedHen CRM. I found a module to create popups (Popup), but am not sure how to get it to interact with my CRM.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Unable to change author name on comment

In moving a website to Drupal &, we hired someone to copy & paste comments into the new site. Unfortunately, all names were left off, resulting in all comments being authored by "anonymous". When I try to edit the name, I get the error message, "You have to specify a valid author."

Is there a way to circumvent this restriction temporarily? I have over 700 comments to correct.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Created/edited nodes no longer save content to fields

After a recent failed attempt to update Drupal core & Open Outreach, I took my site back to a backup version with the help of tech support folks at my hosting service. The rollback would not work, and the tech assisting me said that there were a lot of permissions that needed fixing. So he tried to fix them.

Madison - November Meetup

Start:
2014-11-12 18:30 - 20:30 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Modern web applications are built using new cool JavaScript technologies on the front-end. But how can you use them with Drupal? And why?

In this presentation, Daniel Stout (from Madison, WI) will talk about the hows and whys of "headless Drupal." A recent trend in the Drupal community, headless Drupal is a way to use Drupal as the "data engine" while bypassing much of the theme layer to serve up your site via a JavaScript web application.

In this session, we'll cover:

Drupal414 meetup: Rendering HTML with Drupal - Past, Present and Future

Start:
2014-11-20 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

In this presentation, Steve Persch will review the mental models used in Drupal theming (ie. customizing the way your site looks).

For years Drupal core has encouraged a mindset of altering and overriding its internal understanding of data structures. However, much of the front-end community wants to think of design components independent of their Drupal implementations.

We will discuss tools and workflows that can be used now to reconcile these attitudes including Panels, Display Suite, Sass, static prototypes and style guides. Then we will look ahead to some technologies like Web Components and Drupal 8 to see how these decision points will shift.

And the phrase "Headless Drupal" will come up at least a dozen times. :-)

Virtual participation over Google Hangouts

If you want to participate in the meetup but can't make it down physically, no worries - you can participate over Google Hangouts!

Drupal414 meetup: Let's explore Drupal 8 together!

Start:
2014-10-16 18:00 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

On October 1st, Drupal 8.0.0-beta1 was released! This means it's now go time to start trying it out, porting modules or even building sites (if your project launch date is sufficiently in the future or you like to live dangerously).

We'll talk a little bit about some of the new things in Drupal 8, but mostly we're going to be digging in and trying it out!

Bring your computer and we'll get Drupal 8 installed so you can check out the new -beta1, and we'll explore together, seeing what we can find and how much trouble we can get ourselves into. :-)

(If you don't want to bring your computer down, that's fine too, you can pair with someone else or what the person connected to the projector.)

Since this is going to be an interactive jam session, we're not going to do virtual participation this time. Sorry! Next time we have a more traditional presentation we'll do it again.

Experience with Drupal SSO modules in Madison area?

Hey folks, I'm working at a small firm in Madison and we're trying to get a SSO solution up-and-running to deal with some legacy (non-Drupal) userbase synchronization issues. If there's anyone out there with experience in any of the various SSO solutions that exist for Drupal (that would allow for SSO with a non-Drupal system, i.e., not Bakery) who would be willing to come in and give us a hand in starting something up, we'd love to hear from you.

Thanks!

Web Hosting Survey

Hi -
We're interested in finding out more about the hosting needs of the Drupal community. We've set up a simple survey for this, and will at some point be asking everyone to pitch in and answer some questions. The survey is currently a little on the crude side, but we'd like to ask some of you in the local communities of the Twin Cities and Wisconsin to make a stab at answering the survey so that we can get some feedback and tweak it before putting it out on Planet Drupal.
