Drupal414 meetup: Views - the most useful Drupal module ever!
When getting started with Drupal, it can be difficult to decide which of the 26,000 modules on Drupal.org you should check out and which to ignore. But if there is one module you should learn how to use (and how to use it well), it's the Views module!
Views is (by far) the most popular Drupal module and is even going to be included in Drupal 8.
Out of the box, Drupal allows you to define complex content types with fields and create many peices of content based on them. Using Views allows you to build dynamic lists of this content, for example: a slider, staff listing, event calendar or photo gallery.
In this presentation Elliot Christenson will give an introduction to Views with a step-by-step walk through for new users, showing how to create some simple Views (like the examples mentioned above), and a quick overview of some more advanced features for veteran Views users.
(We'll also be chatting about our experinces at DrupalCon Austin, which Elliot and David were at in the first week of the month!)

ELMSLN packaged via Vagrant for easy spin up and try out
If you don't need to know how to setup vagrant and want to play:
https://github.com/btopro/elmsln-vagrant
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeuDKzs6sj0&list=PLJQupiji7J5fygec37Wd-g...
This screencast is a series of 4 videos (for now, will be more in the future potentially) that show how to get ELMSLN up and running with Vagrant. This is the easiest way to setup this system as other methods require knowledge of bash scripting and a clean server to deploy against.

Drupal’s strength lies in its ability to pull together many different contrib modules to solve your problem. But what happens when contrib modules can't do what you need?
Do you cry, swear, or panic? What about when the client wants their site to work "just so", and you have no idea where to start?
Fear not! Armed with nothing more than a debugger, a few simple functions, and lots of nested arrays, you can tweak existing modules to work the way you want, or build entirely new functionality!

I am building a new site for an existing web radio program. The old site is homemade, and each episode has a unique identifier in the URL, for example:
http://northernspiritradio.org/index.asp?command=showinfo&showid=628645279260
The "showid" at the end is the unique identifier. Though I have not done so yet, I can add this to each corresponding episode.
When we re-point the domain name to the new site, people will keep getting 404 error messages unless I can get Drupal to find the correct episode.

Project management for small teams: Agile and JIRA
If you've ever built a website on a team (big or small), you know there are many more challenges than just the technical! You've got to deal with deadlines, budgets, acurately conveying requirements, keeping track of who's working on what, handling dependencies between different components of the project, tracking bugs, and keeping the stakeholders (ie. clients, bosses) up-to-date on progress, etc...
And if you've never worked on a team - well, learning about some of these things and common pitfalls will get you ready for when you do. :-)
This month, Steve Klebar is going to lead an informal conversation about managing the software development process for small teams. He will talk about his experiences using Agile and JIRA as tools and the benefits of capturing user stories, scenarios and Behavior-driven Development (BDD).
Please bring YOUR war stories as well! Hearing about what went wrong in real life can help demonstrate why these practices are necessary. (And it's super fun to talk about! ;-))

Introduction to Panopoly and Drupal distributions
When you first install Drupal, it's a blank slate - it doesn't really do anything yet. If you want a personal blog, company website, intranet portal or e-commerce store - you need to start installing modules and actually configuring your website into one of those things.
That's where Drupal distributions come in! A Drupal distribution is Drupal plus some modules, themes and configuration, so that when you first install it does something right out of the box.
