Dojo Video Bushido

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi All - I wanted to start a discussion with the Dojo resurgence and redesign in mind. My focus is on two points.

1) I'd like to help come up with a way of categorizing and adding value to video content for the Dojo. I would see this as creating a mash-up feed of content from as many providers as possible, and allowing editorial administration to add content (such as notes, extra materials, required downloads, other downloads (ppt etc)) editorial validation and categorisation. This would most likely mean using the feed api, field mapper etc - would it be easier to create a feed on my own host and cross-authenticate with the dojo for administration, or to do this and create a module the dojo could install, OR collaborate with the dojo to build this functionality direct into the site?

2) Mentoring - I think the slightly intimidating concept of ninjas and senseis doesn't currently deliver. Upon joining the Dojo it would be ideal to be assigned a set of mentors. These mentors would be responsible for being a point of contact for a new user over an initial set period, providing support and collecting feedback. This would obviously create a 'money/time/effort-where-your-mouth-is' scenario, and it depends whether the dojo can stretch to having this level of community service that is directly driven by the "needs of the n00b".

If I've missed these in the group - can someone please show me how to get involved in these elements.

Other idea - "Tutorials wanted"

I think the Dojo could be both remarkable and brilliant, but how do we also make a clear definition between similar content on drupal.org, and also catch duplicates etc?

Targeting the low-hanging fruit...

Yes. This is something I'm going to try to get going as part of my quick re-vamp of the dd.com site.

This is a HUGE question. It's probably the single biggest failure of the dojo so far. It's my hope that by staying abreast with the d.o redesign and the changes being driven by the documentation team, we can create a clear path to insuring that all the good stuff finds a permanent home on drupal.org.

In practice, I think this means we need people who are willing to play the role of content editor: trimming down lengthy notes and trasnscripts to their essence, and pulling that plus whatever video content is pertinent into a well-formed handbook page. Trying to automate this is fundimentally impossible, as the need for a human editor is clear.

But if we're doing between two and four lessons a month, that shouldn't really be all that much work.

Yep the mentoring is a

Yep the mentoring is a biggie, and depends on the real amount of contribution that can be expected.

"But if we're doing between two and four lessons a month, that shouldn't really be all that much work."

The point of the video archive is that we would editorialize and collate as much good content as possible - even that not submitted to the dojo. I think one of the reasons people produce the content is to get their name on it and get traffic and kudos etc. Obviously this choice should stay and people must promote themselves/their companies but I think a feed-based content type or submitted (by another party) video could be valuable and help users differentiate between good and bad advice. And as you say, helping all the good stuff find a permanent home.

I'm certainly willing to take part in this, I'm sure others would be as ratings and opinions from every level would be equally important.

revamp of the d.o video section

One thing I'd really like us to tackle in the d.o redesign is the video section. There was a video discussion many moons ago that also talked about feeds and tagging, etc. I would love to see a clear prototype for what could be implemented on drupal.org itself, so that all videos, regardless of where/how they are produced, end up on d.o.

That is, can we build a clean, simple, useful video archive that could be implemented on d.o? That is the goal I want to work towards and the redesign is a prime opportunity to really hash it out.

How to move forward?

So how to move forward on this topic- does someone need to mock up the video section for d.o. or the Dojo site redesign?

I wanted to ask questions about Video formats for the dojo, but I can't seem to comment on this page: http://groups.drupal.org/node/8916

Whenever you redesign the video section, make paths to contribution clear, and submission guidelines really SUPER clear, since they are very detailed for a god reason.

I made a 40 minute long "Site with JUST Drupal core" last week and used it as a backdrop to a 20 minute presentation I gave this weekend. It was sped up to 12 minutes actually (included pauses).

I realize now I have to re-do this for the web, and for the dojo, since I didn't follow this guidelines on: http://groups.drupal.org/node/8916 I may also need to break the video into chapters/sections/parts since it is fairly detailed running through many core modules & settings - for a new Drupal user.

  • Site settings
  • User > roles & permissions
  • Aggregator
  • Blog
  • Book
  • Contact
  • Forum
  • Profile
  • Search
  • Taxonomy
  • Tracker
  • Performance

Considering what is already available in the Dojo, how should I break up my video? Suggestions welcome.
