Event type:
User group meeting

The next Downtown LA Drupal meetup is on February 21, 2012 and will be at Droplabs, a Drupal event and coworking space in Downtown Los Angeles. Created by LA Drupal members for the LA Drupal community, Droplabs is the host of LA Drupal's monthly Downtown LA meetup, the weekly Pro Drupal 7 Development book study group and special events like LA Drupal's job fairs.

LA Drupal meetups follow a basic format and start off with Drupal news and announcements, local job announcements, raffle prizes and full-length presentations. As always, we'll also have community Q&A, during which time anyone in attendance can ask questions, divine answers from the crowd and give brief, 5-10 minute-long presentations known as lightning talks.

For any changes to our agenda, stay tuned to this meetup announcement or click the Sign up button below (or both!) to be notified when the agenda has been updated.

Exaltation of Larks - Expert Drupal strategy, consulting, development and training Light food and refreshments will be served throughout the evening courtesy of our food and drink sponsor, Exaltation of Larks, a Drupal strategy, consulting, development and training company with a team of Drupal experts in Los Angeles.

We'll finish off the night with more networking and a Drupal After Dark at 9:30pm.

Users Helping Users

The meetup begins at 7:30pm but the doors open a little earlier at 6:30pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal.

Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bona fide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

Presentation: Banking on Drupal at the Echo Park Time Bank, by Autumn Rooney

Time Banking is a simple concept: you work for an hour, earn an hour credit, and spend an hour with someone in your time bank community. Time banks don't get penalized in benefit reductions or pay taxes because unlike market-based national currencies, time banks are more like charitable volunteering circles of mutual aid or relationship-based gift economies. As the recession and Occupy movement encourage people to reimagine work and how they get their needs met in the new economy, time banks are really catching on.

Autumn Rooney is a Los Angeles-based activist and community builder. In March, 2008, she co-founded the Echo Park Time Bank, a community collective whose purpose is to facilitate the cooperative exchange of goods and services among its hundreds of members. It's a pay-it-forward system that connects unmet needs with untapped resources. Recently, the Echo Park Time Bank migrated its time banking software to Community Weaver, a hosted Drupal platform provided by Time Banks USA, a non-profit that is dedicated to promoting and supporting time banking around the world.

In this presentation, Autumn Rooney and Christefano Reyes from Exaltation of Larks will present on the concept and the practice of time banking and how Drupal is used in the organization to fully manage its currency system and economy.

Lightning talks

Given enough time, we'll also have a few lightning talks. These are brief, 5-10 minute presentations, demos or discussions that anyone can give. It can be about a new website you're working on, a Drupal module you've written or come across recently that you'd like to talk about, or just a burning question you'd like to ask of the crowd.

Raffle prizes! Collect them all! Must be present to win!

The raffle prizes this time include discount codes, magazines, DVDs and books! We are always grateful to our sponsors for their continued support. If you have any items you'd like to donate to the raffle, please contact any of the organizers at the meetup.

  • Invitation codes to Pantheon
Pantheon is a Drupal hosting and development platform with the usual stack of Drupal, Apache, MySQL and PHP, but comes with extra high-performance goodness like Pressflow, Memcache, Varnish and Solr. If that weren't enough, Pantheon accounts have a complete environment where code and databases can be moved up and down from dev, test and production.

Sound complicated? It actually isn't, because all this functionality is managed with an easy to use point-and-click interface.

Drupal After Dark

Even if you can't make it to the meetup, you're welcome to join us for a Drupal After Dark. After we wrap up the meeting and clean up, a group of us will go to a nearby restaurant or pub. One time we had beers and a bonfire and were serenaded by Skrillex. We've also gone to a variety of other locations, including Barbara's at The Brewery (at 620 Moulton Ave., just a 5 minute walk away) and Carnitas Michoacan (on 1901 N. Broadway, just a 5 minute drive away).

I'll be coming to talk about our Web Engineer position at the California Science Center.

Any ideas for lightning talks?

Does anyone have any ideas for lightning talks?

I can do a short talk and demo on installing Drush. There's a simple one-liner that I run on every server that I set up, so it's a bit technical but it's so short and simple that I can do this talk in 3-4 minutes.

There wasn't time at this

christefano's picture

There wasn't time at this meetup to do the lightning talk on Drush, so I'll be doing it at the High Performance Drupal meetup next week:

This is very interesting and I think would be helpful for other members of my TB.
Please forgive my ignorance…how do I download this for my ipad? I can open it in safari, but want to be able to take it with me to show others. We are a rural area and do not have consistently reliable internet.

Thank you! De
