Using Drupal for a University-wide ePortfolio System

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

We're exploring the idea of using Drupal for a university-wide ePortfolio system. The feature set certainly looks like it's there (custom content types could organize different page templates. Other modules could help facilitate collaboration and communication). The big question for us is its scalability. Would we be able to scale Drupal to 50,000 to 100,000 student sites? Conceptually each student would have their own mini-site to showcase their content.

Any recommendations on the way this could be architected?

Thanks for any input you can provide.

should have a eportfolio flavor of elms out in a few weeks/ months at least as a proof of concept.

as to the scaling question, open atrium (which uses similar tech to open scholar, elms and many other distros) had a blog post written about it at one point that the gov was using it w. 40k users. I think well reach a point soon where hardware can handle almost anything we throw at it, drupal or otherwise.

looking outside of distros I would look into either domain access, spaces / og, or some hybrid multivariate to accomplish eportfolios.
