Help with building a forum

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hello there,

I am building a website where I need a Forum for a community and I wanted to extend the Drupal Core Forum's functionality but as I am new to drupal i am getting very confused and so Could anyone help me??? please...

Well I don't know if it is necessary as I have never used Core Forum before so I don't really now what it looks like, but I suppose it comes with the installation.

The forum would need to let people who wants to post content or reply to a thread to have a registered account ie they'd need to log in. However the content will have to be visible to the public.

As I am new to this the only module that sounds good to me is Forum Access but again I wouldn't have a clue if this does the job, Could anyone help me get around this???

Either Drupal 6 or 7 tips would be welcomed

Thanks

Claudio

Advanced forum

Hi Claudio,

I recently created a community that uses forums in Drupal 7. The core forums leave a little to be desired in terms of functionality. Fortunately, there are lots of modules out there to help fill in the gaps. Check out some of these modules:

http://drupal.org/project/advanced_forum - A whole bunch of general forum improvements, including themes and extra functionality.
http://drupal.org/project/subscriptions - For email notifications on forum threads
http://drupal.org/project/signature_forum - Better signature support.

From what it sounds like you're looking to do you probably won't need the forum access module. If all you want to do is have anonymous users with only read access then you should be fine using the core Drupal permissions.

Good luck!

Thanks Adam

Hi Adam,

Thank you very much for replying, yeah i had a look at those.. very useful. Also, they comply either for Drupal 6 or 7. You see, I don't know which version to go for as it's my first time around, and they say that 7 is easier but there is much more documentation on Drupal 6, besides i do have books on Drupal 6...What do you think? Also I don't have a lot of time to get the project done, etc...

Yes, the only thing i want users to do, to post or reply to threads, is to have them registered with their own account and log in username and password, that's it.

Also, I would need a blog, which I supposed the route is the same Drupal Core Blog + Advanced Blog, is it? But still do the Drupal Core Blog and Forum come straight out of the box when installing Drupal???

Thanks a lot for your tips

Regards

Claudio

Go with Drupal 7

markwk's picture

Go with Drupal 7. It's UI is cleaner and it's a ton more intuitive than Drupal 6. From what you are talking about doing with a Blog and Forum setup. Drupal 7 will be more than powerful enough when combined with the above mentioned modules, especially advanced_forum.

One recommend would be to NOT use the blog module if you intend this to a editor's blog (i.e. privileged users will be creating something like a site blog). The blog module works around the concept of each user having their own blog. Set up up a blog using a new and separate content type for blog and add any fields you might need.

Thanks for replying,

If you remember I posted a thread about a school website that accepts donation to which you posted a comment... http://groups.drupal.org/node/202648 So the only use of the Blog for this website is to display Latest News with eventually the possibility for the user to leave comments. Also, I wanted to have a section with a short introduction of the Latest News on the homepage in a way alike that user would be redirected to the Blog page by clicking "learn more..." for example if you see what I mean...

Thanks

Claudio

This feature should get you

This feature should get you close: http://drupal.org/project/featured_news_feature (or check out the various Debut features, like http://drupal.org/project/debut_blog).

Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the links... Will the debut blog substitute the Advanced blog Module? I have seen Advanced Blog is only for Drupal 6, Also what would you raccomend in terms of modules if I am gonna be using Drupal 6 instead of 7 ???, as I have more books and tutorials about... I don't have anything about drupal 7 to get me started.

Thanks

I don't know advanced blog

I don't know advanced blog but both those features will give you a blog/news setup, though they are slightly different.

For learning resources, lots of stuff out there. NodeOne's stuff is great and free: http://dev.nodeone.se/en/learning-library Lynda.com's stuff is always useful too.

Tons of books out there for Drupal 7 as well, but I've only used the module developer book so not sure in terms of Drupal for users books.

Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks a lot for your help, I will have a look at the modules... hope you ok if I refer to you for help ;) at some point

Thank you very much

Go D7 w/ Core Mods

joegml's picture

Claudio, I'd suggest going w/ D7 for sure.

I think the core forum and blog modules will get you most of what you're looking for. I'd suggest setting them up and playing with it. Set up some test users so you can see things from their point of view: user1, user2, etc. Have fun. Experiment!

Forum Creation

jeenarohan's picture

To get ideas about your site forum or discussion site generation is a good choice. Through this the users can share their experience about the service. Recently I went through a scholarship essay writing service site. The site itself containing a forum. I read most of the comments and threads hanged out there to understand about that forum.
