Celebration of Life for Igal Koshevoy
The overlap of the different Portland tech communities is extensive so I thought I'd make this sad post here because I know some of you knew Igal Koshevoy. Though he was not a Drupal guy he was an extraordinary open source community builder and good work he did assuredly overlapped into our realm.
First, The sad news. This from a Stumptown Syndicate announcement:
"Sometime early Tuesday, April 9, Igal Koshevoy left us, following a long struggle with depression. He was a beloved member of our open source technology community, and will be missed." Read more of the announcement.
For my own part I'm fairly heartbroken.
We are beginning to work on a Celebration of Life for our friend and colleague, Igal Koshevoy. We welcome all who wish to participate, volunteer, and contribute to these efforts.
We have set up a website to help our community celebrate Igal's life Please share memories, photos or words of remembrance, and read what others have shared. We have also created a Facebook page, and on Twitter we request that you use the hashtag #igalko or his twitter handle @igalko.
We are beginning to gather an RSVP count to inform selection of a location and a date for a memorial. Please RSVP at Eventbrite and we will update you with event details as soon as they are confirmed. You can sign up as a volunteer when you RSVP, or by contacting carolynn@tenx.org.
Stumptown Syndicate is accepting contributions on behalf of Friends of Igal Koshevoy, if interested please read the Contribute page.

We are stoked to announce the creation of the Pacific Northwest Drupal Summit 2013 Vancouver organizing committee.
Ten people answered the call for interest and met at The Jibe office in downtown Vancouver's Gastown. It is, of course, early times, but here's what we have so far.
The conference will be on a Friday and Saturday in October. Subject to location availability we are planning for October 18th and 19th at a venue in downtown Vancouver.
The location hunt has started! If you have any contacts that can get us a deal at a great spot please contact our venue coordinators.

It's April and that means the monthly Portland Drupal meetup is right around the corner! Last month we had a ton of great lightning talks, but I know the 5 minute limit had some people begging to go deeper into topics. This month we're back to the regular 15-20 minute presentations.
Leave a comment below if you'd like to present.
As usual, the meetup will take place at 6pm at the OpenSourcery office (1636 NW Lovejoy St).

Hey all! In the likely event of my attendance at DrupaCon this year, I would really like to avoid hotel expenditures. It seems frivolous to me, especially when there's such a large community of people I could reach out to and possibly find a place to lay my head between days.
Maybe others would be interested in trying this, too, so here's a thread travelers and potential hosts can post requests and availability to.
About me: from Berkeley, I recently moved to DC to work for Acquia on a high-profile project. I'm clean, courteous, and happy to buy beer and/or cook (if time permits).

Hey everyone,
There were a good amount of people who were interested in being able to access my presentation after the lightning talks, so I figured I'd post it up to share. I apologize in advance for any errors in there, I completed this in between other major tasks at my day job and then had to go back to being a super hero afterwards.

NOTE: Different location this month. We're trying out Squishymedia's headquarters as a meetup spot.
Squishymedia is at 116 NE 6th Ave (corner of 6th and Couch) a block north of Ron Toms, 3rd floor. Street parking is available and normally easy; also plenty of bus lines run Burnside, Couch, Grand, MLK.
There is a call box down at the front door and once the first person arrives we'll probably send someone down to the door and just keep a Squishyer posted there.
The topic this month will be web design trends, historically as well as currently.

I'd like to store data securely in the database of my site which is a D6 based OpenAtrium install. To this end, I prettymuch just grabbed the text module from CCK (since I'm not releasing this as my own module) and then enabled the Encrypt module and added "encrypt()" and "decrypt()" around what I thought were the appropriate variables.
I have no issue with decrypting the data, but encrypting it seems to be a bit of a battle.

We've had some really great themed meetups recently, but sometimes that can get a bit monolithic and requires quite a bit of preparation from presenters. This month we're bringing back the Lightning Presentation format!
Lightning presentations are quick 5 minute demos or how-tos. Show everyone what you've been working on. Share a tip or trick you just learned. Get feedback on a challenge you're working to resolve.
If you'd like to give a Lightning presentation, leave a comment below.

March 9-10 is the Drupal Sprint Weekend, with local sprints being held around the world! Portland is no exception, and thanks to the fine folks at OpenSourcery we will be holding all-day sprints at their offices on Saturday and Sunday the 9th and 10th of March. The address is:
Open Sourcery

Portland, OR

This sprint will not have any specific focus, other than people should come to make public contributions to Drupal. Some examples of this could be
- Writing docs for core or contributed modules
- Organizing events
Portland Drupal sprint?
Curious if anyone is planning (or interested in planning) participation in the Drupal Sprint Weekend March 9-10.
Portland is, after all, home of the Drupal Association and the next Drupalcon...seems odd we wouldn't be participating!
Sadly I'm just a freelancer, so I don't have an office I can offer as a space. Anyone else?

Website building tools for non-programmers
Hi all,
I'm looking for recommendations of site-building tools. My organization serves nonprofits and I often get asked what tools they could use to make a simple 'about us' website of their own pretty simply. This by definition implies free/cheap hosted services that require little code, preferably no code. I'm guessing some of you have reccomendations you also make when approached by clients with too-small budgets.
